Recently?  A while ago they fixed cave loot and made it all like normal enc. stuff, with a higher det % and a few break counts.

Yeah, earning easy high tier stuff due to silly AI routines, abusing the LoS is totally the best PvE feauture.

At least hunting in caves was somewhat interesting PvE and you could do it with other people.
Crafting isn't interesting at all and you do it alone.

Oh, and if you don't know this, massive farming of weapons for PvP never was done in caves in the first place.
People do it in normal encounters.

There was nothing wrong with the idea of Caves, the reward was just disproportionate to the difficulty. The aim is more to increase the difficulty and make the rewards better, rather than to leave them in their current state.

You can still got interesting loot in caves. But you have to be very very very lucky. (gauss pistols and solar scorcher, hell yeah!)

Looks like you have never encountered any cave with your unleveled, unpro, undrugged build thinking: "will it be some precious raiders, some ultraprecious raiders with sniper rifle and 40:1 people ratio who will pwn me or some deathclaws cave which will kill me".

Anyway it was never easy to just "earn stuff" that way, I'm sure you would know that if you ever try. You could search for interesting, challenging cave for a long time, then encounter narrow one with pack of big deathclaws inside and bang (or "roar", to be exact), you're dead. Gotta go get new armor, gun etc. and pray not to meet these deathclaws again. Fair pay for fair work, eh?

If scavenging/searching the Wastes for valuable items isn't "falloutish", then I obviously don't understand that word.

I did that cave crawling thing very often when I started playing the game, as I, like you, liked it. But it was too easy to kill the caves inhabitants, compared to the stuff you get. You just lure one after one enemy out of the group and kill them one by one, or you just run out of the cave to heal you. Ofcourse, the enemies wait in there for you to kill them after you've fully healed yourself. Not that it's not cool to gather stuff this way, but as said way too easy.
