what is the meaning of "Explorer" perk?
« on: February 25, 2011, 08:22:26 am »

Refer to the information from 2238 wiki, it marked: The mark of the Explorer is to search out new and interesting locations. With this Perk, you have a greater chance of finding special places and people. Higher chance to find special encounters

but i don't understand which location is the "new and interesting locations" or what is the "special encounters". is that means there's any location not marked on the 2238 map, but only be discovered by this perk? or this perk can improve the chance to encounter the battles such as bos vs unity? anyone know the details of this perk?

thanks for the answer.

Special encounters: http://www.fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/Special_encounters

Perk doesn't work, because of balance issues. Everyone has the same amount of chance to find a special encounter.

It will need to be changed in the upcoming perk shake up - feel free to propose another use ;)

Explorer perk v1:
Bonus: More chance to find Broc Flower/junk whatever in a encounter.

Issues: Will provide crafter alts with this "must have" perk.

Explorer perk v2:
Bonus: More chance to find caves/rare items in random encounters (like condom, rubber boots whatever). You should also be able to find such items also in the desert map with the small house.

If possible, it could be the possibility to encounter rare random encounter locations, aka new small maps made by mappers. It would not bring you much profit (such as special items or treasure), but it would bring you fun (encountering locations you hardly ever met). With also the current advantage of this perk maintained (2 squares range instead of 1 in worldmap).

That's Pathfinder.  Right now Explorer does nothing.

And a good use for Explorer would be for it to increase travel speed maybe, but not increase the OD check for encounters.

Actually that's scout, not pathfinder

Well.. those not sound bad suggestions for Explorer perk :)

Alright, my bad. But I'm maintaining my idea:

I do prefer it more than Harald's idea (more stuff found in encounters) for two reasons. Firstly, it is not exploitable, not farmable, no "explorer-alts". Secondly, Explorer perk has always been some non-profitable bonus perk, for people that didn't care about caps and cared more about having a fun gaming experience. That's why I think it would fit, and be great, if with this perk you encountered unusual (rather empty) locations.

Best to keep it so it can work without a mountain of other content added. I also don't particularly like just "more loot" perks - needs to be something interesting and useful

Well, right but I thought adding new maps/encounter locations wasn't a big deal. Otherwise I personally have no idea how Explorer perk could work without new content and without being a farming perk.

What about doing it ignore malus of map for speed - allow to go faster in mountains area without making you uber fast in desert/plains area combined with pathfinder.

It is not much of a big deal, there is already work being made on such smaller "special" encounters and maybe this perk could just raise the chance to get them a bit. It's not that there is fat loot or such in said encounters. And it's not really "tons of work" like Solar said ;P

This is kind of a cool idea.  However, maybe the best option is to send it the way of Tag! or Mr. Fixit.  Just nix the perk altogether, so uninformed noobs don't take it and then spend hours looking for an alien crash site.
