Just check the Wiki to see if you need to stay alive to complete a quest.

Dying doesn't make you lose the quest, loosing the briefcase is just a side-effect of dying :P If you stored the briefcase, then died, it's fine.

Yeah well you are right. Strange we don't have that kind of PKs: trolls who would just camp Reno in search of new players (who have a tendency to go for SG Gunsmith 3), kill them and demand money for the briefcase. Of course, I know you won't get much profit from this, but... Trolls just wanna have fun!
