No free rooms? Possible solution
« on: February 02, 2011, 06:32:17 pm »

To populate cities there should be reasons to visit them. Rooms for rent could be that reason, if they are available longer than few hours after each wipe.

So when you are renting a room, you spawn here after talk with NPC:

Map file is here.

Renting system like payment each week or month could remain as it is.

Map is just an example, it took ten minutes to make anyway. What about the idea itself?

Yeah I think we need something like this. Having a finite number of rooms just doesn't work for an MMO. For payment, I think caps are still fine, but there should also be repeatable quests every payment period. They'd be a little time consuming, but would take the place of payment. The quests could either work to completely negate payment, or to reduce a specific amount (25%?) for each quest completed.

Ex:

The owner says there is a rat/scorpion/etc. problem in the basement, and dispatches the player to clear them out.
The owner is having trouble with a particular NPC tenant, and the player must either collect payment, or get them to leave.
The hotel's boiler room/water pump/something else isn't working, and players can use science/repair to fix the problem.

If these rooms are all instanced, including the quest locations, there should be no lack of housing in the future.
Plus, this solves the issue of locking NPCs/players in hotel rooms they do not own.

Wichura I was waiting for someone to propose this suggestion and you also made maps for those rooms, good job.
Gunduz your idea reminds me more The Sims or Constructor, than Fonline. Im for one time quest per char, only.

Gunduz' idea is fine. It's not a good idea to give players each thing "for free".

But Wichura, what would be the advantage of having this town house as oppose to making a tent and placing the tent right next to the city?

Less hassle, the less feeling of the need to cheat (dual log), quick safe zone in town....  Honestly Hotels are a badly executed feature in every way right now anyway, but this way it would be put into near perfect balance.

The only thing we can't fix, is the quick safe zone thing.

Bad features atm with hotels:

1. quick safe zone (almost unfixable)
2. shooting from windows.
3. Locking people in hotels.
4. EXTREME griefing. (killing militia over and over from hotel spawn)

To populate cities there should be reasons to visit them
Also you could buy such room once for all, for 5k caps (example), instead of pay the rent.

Rooms / maps have to be deleted after some time, else the server is cluttered with too many maps. It's is very unlikely that we will ever add instanced maps which stay forever.

Nice idea, I prefer buy it than rent but...

Lexx base and tent stay, so what is the problem? Maybe you can make something like tent, when no one go in for X time the map is remove...

Bases cost a lot money and are there for faction management (also their amount is limited by available faction names). Tents have a garbage timer. Don't visit the tent for a while and it's gone.

Same with temporary quest locations: Don't finish the quests in x time, the locations will be deleted.
