As the topic says, How do I get in to Sierra Army Depot?

I have met the hermit and found the location, but the entrance is guarded by turrets - how do I get past those? I tried to sneak and it worked somewhat but not enough to avoid the middle one tearing me apart...

Do I have to kill them? And what weapons would be most useful if that is the case?

Take a long range weapon like sniper rifle to kill turrets while staying out of their range.

Do you know if there are more turrets or the like inside the base that we need to watch out for? I'll be bringing loads of material to craft with and would like not to to waste them if possible

Yes there are robots inside who will attempt to turn you into human bits on a stick. The eyebots arent a big problem, the brainbots can be dealt with aswell, But those big robots that shoot rockets are a major threat. either having good sneak or a bunch of friends is recommended.

Ammo you say? Like 7.62 ammo?

I could suggest you making an character which can join and remain at the Raiders Faction. They have a extended workbench, which allows you to craft 7.62 ammo.
Mind that this character will be hated almost everywhere in south, so you'll need a shared tent near Raiders Base or a good hiding spot.

Yeah - I've been looking at that option as well but that area around the den isn't nice for low level characters and new players like myself

But that will most likely be the best option for 7.62 ammo yes
