OMG, me seen tat show, I liked it alot but he seemed a tad to wack to bother trying to keep up with show timings.  Besides, the whole cliche thing where some kid that isnt willing to kill anything wants to be a bloody pirate...  Pirates killed and raped things constantly for a living but then u got some wack ass kids in movies being naive and all wanting to be pirate king....  Not saying those movies were total bombs but its just old.

As for Manga i can recommend: Battle Royale Plot: a 9th grade class in a parallel universe japan is send to a lone island for a goverment game. Last one surviving wins.

as for Anime i can recommend the old and new Lupin the 3rd , there are some really old episodes but the new ones that were cast on MTV in 2001 here in Germany are very good too (you find them in english too of course). Plot: Arsene Lupin III the grandson of famous french masterthief Arsene Lupin is on the move, stealing everything he finds worth stealing, all happening in a oldskool stylish and funny way.

Another more typical japanese anime i recommend is Death Note (really brainfuck sometimes) Plot: Some guy finds a notebook that can kill anyone whose face and name you know. Thinking he is a god of justice he starts to kill criminals announced on tv nonstop. This calls the authorities on a hunt for a murderer who has never been to the crimescene.

Another more japanese: One Outs! (another hard brainfuck but this time in baseball theme, yeah sounds strange, i dont have a fuckin clue about baseball but its a very good anime even without knowledge and interest in baseball) Plot: Some baseball team has a problem winning their matches. Their starbatter finds a new pitcher, but this one is a professional gambler, who at first seems to bring the team to the championship, but sectretly only wants to make as much money as he can.

These are, as far best things ive read/watched. I usally dont like anime that goes like "FUCK YEAH FRIENDSHIP BONDING DATTEBAYO KAWAIIIIIIII DESU DESU" i like the mature, creepy, brainfuck, thoughtfull ones better.

For the mature thing, Heat was cool, Monster (only seen the anime but it's very good), and one I very like, Gantz.

Monster is pretty cool. Didn't see the anime, I suggest to read the comics. Also, you can look for Akira, a long post-apo manga. Osamu Tezuka and Hiroshi Hirata are also skilled authors that I like :)
