About alts, casual players, one-char-only and other
« on: June 10, 2010, 11:46:16 pm »

In polish subforum exists a topic about alt reducing. Half of this topic is regular flame (as always), but there is also bunch of not-so-bad ideas we'd like to share with all, not Poles only.

- Fast relogs are still working
Solution: if you can't beat it, join/accept it. This however does not concern dual- and multilogs, which are cheating.
Pros: everyone can use it without being afraid of ban; no more hard work of dev team with disable or block it - sooner or later someone will find a way to avoid any security system and here we go again.
Cons: possibility to "abuse" like healing your own char with another one if you keep all of them in one place

- Casual players have no chances playing couple hours per week
Solution: make HP's stop increasing after reaching 21 lvl (see below)
OR
make HP's full amount right at the beginning. Example is here:
STR 5, EN 2, hp = 84,
STR 5, EN 4, hp = 108,
STR 5, EN 6, hp = 132,
STR 5, EN 8, hp = 156,
STR 5, EN 10, hp = 180,
Increasing HP's could be still possible with Lifegiver perks - every could give you like +20 HP for example. Only two Lifegivers available, like it is now.
Pros: no fights like 50 HP 5lvl char vs 600 HP 35lvl char; you don't have to wait and play a lot of time to have a minimal chance to survive; casual players and beginners don't have to afraid of every scorpion or rat no more; you can't say if this bluesuit with 120 HP is a beginner or silent undercovered sniper - watch your step!
Cons: needs shitload of work I guess; it's not very "falloutish"

- Remove level cap, perks "Sniper" and "Slayer"
Reason: this may encourage people to play one char only, even after reaching 21 level. Removing both "critical" perks sounds simply fair in MMO game. Skill points and perks could be given like before 21 lvl, however HP's increasing needs to be disabled after that level.
Pros: less alts, more universal chars; player will be more attached with his char; if one player can fight, travel, heal and barter himself, he won't need specialized alts no more; reason to gather exp after "magical 21th"; even a true fighter, so called "powerbuild" char, could be useful in other things than combat; you won't need one char for repairing stuff, other to barter, yet another to travel, a medic, gun crafter and of course main, "preciousss" combat char - no fast reloging issue again; how many skill points you need to be efficient in combat? 250? 280? 300? And what then? Fine, FA/Doctor up to 300. Is this really necessary?
Cons: disadvantage for less experienced chars and advantage of "no-lifers" (like in any other MMO by the way, so I'm not sure if it is "con" itself here)

- To get 3rd lvl of profession I need alt; It's not possible to have two 3rd lvl professions on one char
Solution: remove 4 professions limit per char. It's a great feature that after this wipe we can have 4 instead of 3 professions, but people are greedy :>
Pros: only one craft-machine char is needed to craft - less alts again; if point above will come true, you could play your crafter like "normal" char
Cons: crafting cooldowns will be accumulate on one char; people still could make an alt to craft things easier/faster, but they will do it anyway, no matter what restrictions, cooldowns or limiations will be

All above is not a one-and-only vision of game, these are not perfect, brilliant badass ideas. Please discuss.

If you can't stop yourself from flaming or trolling, if you want to write "oh noes it will be abuse!!11" and nothing more here, if you want to tell me something about my mother and dog or just how much you hate those foking Poles - PM me. There is already one flame topic this kind in polish section, let's not continue here.

Well, despite all the flame about it in polish section, all these 4 solution are quite coherent and can be expressed with just 2 words: remove limitations. The issue is simple - the more restrictions are in game, the more alts people need to get a satisfaction from it. There is no way to stop it, because it would require either:

-   hire 50 more gms and ban 3/4 players from the server (and people would still try their luck),
-   having to pay for registration of each character (illegal),
-   change people (good luck with that)

So, the only way to fight alting is to LET  PEOPLE MORE ;)

If a limit of leveling to only 21 will be removed so there should be adde a limit with skills.
So if you have more than 21 lvl you can add a skill only to max 200, not 300 (but before lvl 21 max will be still 300)
There will be no chars with all skills on 300.

that could work out as you can only really get 1 skill to 300 by 21 anyways

Having INT 5, even on 99 level you would have max 3 skills on 300%. Excess skill points are not really an issue.

Hell, make it like the Fallout Tactics multilayer. Make your maxed out char and throw it in there.

So I could have all skills 200 and one 300? sounds great

Even if this was implemented I would still make an alt for crafting because it is easier going from 1 to 5, then 21 to 27 (or maybe even more depending on your Int).

Sure, you would make an alt to accelerate your progress at the beginning. At some point you won't need it any more though.

It's obious that removing a level capacity won't magically eliminnate all the alts from the server, but it will substantially reduce their number. I bet min 80% of the players would prefer to play with 1 character just because it's more comfortable.. IF only they didn't have to resign from their combat capabilities.

And here, my lost in flame idea, comes into play. For getting yourself first level of any profession you will need at least 6th level. Same with higher levels of professions, higher charcter level will be needed (prof. level 2 means 12 level char. or without levelcap even bigger, prof. level 3 means 21 level char.). Level cap for profession, taadah!.

Max hp given right at lvl1 is good idea. Everyone will reach lvl 21 anyway.

Removing level cap could be the answer but we'd get ubermensch. Players aren't meant to be all-universal or spend most of their time in levelling.

But you're right about one thing: players must be encouraged to play one char.

EDIT

could you translate what scypior says here.

I think it is also important to consider if you want people to be 300% sneakers and have the ability to doctor cripple.

Rough translation:
Even if it doesn't solve the problem with alts, the account-players system would be convenient because of the possibility of reserving the name of a player  (or gang), which would prevent stealing player names after every wipe. That's why such system is planned to be implemented (sooner or later, we will see).

Well, I don't see anything wrong with being 300% sneaker at some high enough level. I have 240% sneaking alt and it isn't that powerful.

Lol, just like we weren't all-universal now  ;). All attempts to limit players by setting impassable barriers have turned out to be pointless. Removing levelcap is like accepting something that is inevitable anyway.
