Crafting/Gathering and mmorpg
« on: May 15, 2010, 06:34:39 pm »

Crafting and gathering system in FOnline (or any mmorpg) - is cool, looks good BUT ONLY as an idea.

In reality if there is something to gather/craft there will be bots/multiclients and players who use bots/multiclients will be way ahead before legit players.

Becouse of that I started to think if its not better to completly get rid of gathering/crafting system( or close it to only basic items) and make items obtainable in other way, maybe could be founded only in random encounters for exemple.

or make some random ecounters. i mean your bot is on a map and gathers fruits over night. but every some time there will be a random critters visiting location.. Bots are too simple to fight back in combat ;]

+1

MMO style games just sucks and i don't consider FOnline like one right now, even if it's one by definition. And craft could be good with a little tweaks, that's what beta is for.

Ive never played any other MMO before so i dont know how they do it in the mainstream but after this id say crafting/gathering in mmorpg = boring
It was shiney and new for a bit but now its back to the same old routine with better scenary.

I can explain it to you... usually in MMO there is no cumulative delay in gathering/crafting, but the action itself take time or more stage to complete.

For example, mining take about 10 per ore, or if you need to trasform the raw material many times before get final product.

Comon man, the gathering was polished and tweaked so long and it's working pretty good now. No way it's going to be dumped. What needs to be done is to get rid of cheaters and botters like vederas said. Encourage players to do stuff with the same char while under cooldown, instead of leaving bots gather stuff while you watch a movie or play another game.

In the end making every crafting place findable for everybody would kill bots too. Ever seen bots in unsafe mines? Remove gathering areas from bases and scrap private mines.

Bots aren't that big issue however, they give unfair advantage to players and somewhat wreck the economy but they aren't crawling in your tent at night and stealing all your valuables. In other words, they aren't doing major harm to anyone.

Crafting should not be only way how to obtain stuff. Fight and loot your reward or quests or something else... anything. But being forced to farm-craft stuff just because its only way how to get is is not good.

Most MMOs have kind of a crafting/gathering system and often a profession that comes with it.
I don't see a problem in that, nor in the way it's done here.
It doesn't take time in FOnline, instead you get a cooldown in which you can do other things.
Go hunting, do a quest, ...
Some people make it sound like they don't like it as it costs them time and they just want to level up quickly.
There might be a better solution or a way to make the current situation work better, the game is still in beta after all.

I honestly dont get it whats left to complain about.
Gathering and crafting became dynamic and fluid since wipe. I go to mine, gather untill im full(~12 min gathering CD because i have small frame), go back to base, craft stuff, go back to mine to gather more. It takes roughly 10 min in TB to get from mine to base, craft, get to mine again. I can wait 2 mins... Or, it takes the same amount of time at higher levels to go gather HQ materials in RT. This means that its hard to use dual logging for crafting, and doesnt give any meaningfull advantage.

Only problems i see with crafting atm, is that brahmin hides are dangerous to farm as allways, and junk is hard to gather.

 I suggested this http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=1891.0 .
Resume: You and your temates, everyone specialized in different skills, will try to find abandoned (by people) pre war toxic waste storage at the end of long random cave. You will have to kill critters (fire geckons, deathclaws), detect radiation.disable land mines, use anti rad drugs, use shoes against acid on ground, deactivate or destroy turret defense system, repair generator, hack computer and of course, find some stuff. Finaly, you will have to go back thru the cave.

I like this idea, many players too, but developers dont. :(

I personally have not a single problem with the actual crafting system.

If find it fun, (ok, I'm playing an "average guy") to be able to craft my first own stuff (even if it's shit) in the first levels. Then I got myself the first Armorer and Small Guns Profession. I crafted some combat leather jackets, had fun going all over the worldmap searching for it's compounds etc. Then, the first guns could be crafted. As I reached a higher level I was finally able to obtain HQ materials. And this part is really fun for me. All the people there (or the most) are coming "naked", just with a sledgehammer. Even if I dislike PK in general, I mostly shoot those guys. If some players who are more armed come there, it's even more fun and entertaining. And I have absolutely no problem in fighting them even if I have just some "average" build. Also, as someone said earlier, the crafting system is much more "fluid" then it was before. It's actually the first game in which I enjoy crafting.

But what is "wrong", is again - botters, cheaters, alt abusers etc.

actually this gathering cooldown system is pretty good IMO

you should try the EVE online mining. now THAT's boring!
people actually play the game AFK because it takes HOURS to gather some decent ammounts of minerals.
ofc you cannot do anything else in that period, so for some people the game consists of endless shooting at asteroids.

crafting is good here also, but some diversity in resources would be more fun. i actually have all resources within few minutes walking on map
would be fun if for some tier 3 stuff you'd need to go across the map or in dangerous pve areas. just a thought.

also when speaking of EVE. that game has THE best economy system in MMOs
it is almost completely player driven and works amazing. it actually simulates the real deal and is really a game for itself. market pvp and stuff like that  :)

devs should try to implement something in that direction. ofc you need a lot more players for that...
