The hard life of a thief

After the wipe, I decided to play as a thief, finding it an entirely nonsense after a while....
First of all, you don't get xp from stealing, which doesn't make much sense, since you got them in FO2 and mostly impairs the non-violent rogue experience.
They are almost no NPC characters to steal from.
You cannot use the Sneak skill to silently approach other players, since it doesn't have any effect on them. This together with the previous point, makes the skill almost useless.
The new reputation systems allows to build up reputation just by buying and the selling the same good over and over again to the shoppers; at some point I was bartering 100 ammo against 100 of the same ammo at the gun shop. Nonsense. Or bug. Or exploit.

In the end I gathered tons of money but then I had to go kill radscorpions or alike to get xp.
So I would suggest to the devs that they should either make it possible to properly play as a rogue or to ban it entirely.
It is almost as boring and pointless as crafting, so I think it should be possible to build a career as a thief/rogue/whatever

Check my suggestion http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=2860.0, imho it could really improve roleplay as "bad" character.

Anyway you are wrong about some things. You get exp from stealing but only when you steal from NPCs (even brahmins) and its pretty much the best way how to level up your char right now especially with higher skill in stealing. Also I absolutely don't get current karma system among players. You steal some useless crap and nobody notice that but as result of your thievery you get -6000 karma. It strongly reminds me stupid Fallout 3 and god help us if devs stay on this course!

Karma should get reworked from the ground because atm you can pretty much screw your char big time with even small mistake and there is no turning back. And when thief can't enter NCR then its useless char at all since there is no other place where you can steal things. NPCs are in 90% set for godmode against stealing and players are distracted only in NCR since everywhere else you get shot or people are way more suspicious.

Yeah, seems you had some pretty good ideas....
Still, if we were intended to steal from NPCs, I guess some more of them walking around won't hurt anyone; to steal from cows doesn't look so awesome  (I don't do animals ;)
Aside from the Xp, which seems the biggest issue to me, the Sneak skill should definitely be of some use. Right now every time you approach someone and you use the steal skill, a huge blinking sign appears on top of your head, while the main point of the fine art of stealing is not be noticed. Maybe removing the skill animation would help.

It would be great to be able to steal from the guards....All that wasted loot when somebody gets killed in NCR...mmm

They need to fix the thieving many time I have not been noticed yet Karma still went down and it really sucks because you basicly can't steal :S

Well you can, but only once so you have to think twice before you choose you victim. Its just another absolutely useless skill right now. Even tho you can steal a lot without getting -karma (only possible at mining sites) its still very buggy, not realistic at all and you can create never-fail character right now. Also that very annoying fact that almost every single NPC ingame has can't-touch-this inventory forces thiefs focus only at players = stealing possible pretty much only in NCR/VC/SF and after 1 or 2 (un)successful robberies you will be vilified in those cities.

So yeah thieves are now more useless than ever.
