There are different opinions expressed concerning the state of affairs in the north, what best describes your personal experience there?

Complete Hellhole: only endgame pvp teams should even dare enter.
Pretty Bad At Times: at certain times or instances the area becomes unsafe for most players.
Recommended For Skilled Players: if you have a decent gun and you can handle it well you're good.
It's All The Same To Me: not much grass left on either side of the fence.
Hidden Paradise: if you can reach it you should, its 99.9% asshole free.

Since we're on the topic of northern towns: is it 'safe'/'allowed' by the inhabitants (PC's) to buy detonators there?

If you don't meet bored PvP-ape with militia's/merc's backup - why not? AFAIR these parts are quite cheap, so grab few caps, go and check. Not much to loose, isn't it?
