Title: FOnline: Battleground - new pure PvP server

FOnline: Battleground is a server based on UT-mod written by John earlier this year. Its purpose is to make a place for players interested in FOnline PvP only. Basically, you can jump into the action just few minutes after downloading the client, as all character's experience is given by an NPC and all equipment needed to fight is given by another NPC.There is also no need to set up any tournament, as the process is automated and the matches start on their own, as soon as there is at least one player in both teams. All players not involved into fighting are able to observe whole battlefield.


Game mechanics:

Server's basic mechanics (PvP, perks, traits, skills and items) are taken from FOnline: Wasteland 2155, with additional changes or significant rules:
- level cap = 21,
- players can have SPECIAL characteristics lower than 3 and will still be able to gain perks,
- no worldmap.. all takes place in a single map,
- no alt or duallogging limitations,
- no roleplaying rules apply,
- NameColorizing will colour fighters appropriately and automatically,
- members of each team, their frags and total frags are listed on the right and left side of the screen,
- no drugs, poison and radiation mechanics,
- Stimpaks and Super Stimpaks are given at the start of each fight,
- Super Stimpaks no longer cause damage after time,
- no ability to steal or loot other players,
- first aid and doctor cooldown duration changed temporarily to 60 seconds,
- hotkeys for body parts: Y, U, H, J,
- hotkey for reloading weapon: R,
- moving sandbags temporarily disabled.

Tournament mechanics:

1. The match will start if at least one player is present in both teams.
2. The match will last until only one team is alive on the battlefield.
3. After each match, there is a short break to rearm.
4. To leave the match, speak to the guy in black robes during the break.

Server's rules are simple:
- don't act like an asshole or you'll be banned,
- exploiting known issues will lead to a ban as well.

As the development of FOnline: Battleground has started just one week ago, you can expect many bugs and balance issues:
- holes in the walls, missing blockers here and there - the map will get improved slowly,
- some perks, weapons and such overpowered, while others - underpowered ,
- lag issues when something wrong is going on with the server machine or its connection, especially when too many players connect at once,
- if the terrible bug happens, the tournament will stop working and all is lost.

Known bugs:
- Namecolorizing your own char will work only after you make a quick logout and login. Nothing serious, I guess.
- FA and DOC cooldowns aren't shown correctly (or at all).

Nothing is guaranteed or offered, so you're playing at your own risk

2. Download the client here:

3. Put master.dat and critter.dat into your client directory.
4. Connect to the server: 2155.servegame.com, port 5000.
5. Register a new character and login to the game.
6. Speak to NPCs to gain experience and receive gear, then ask NPC in black robes to join one of fighting parties.
7. Fight!

about perks -> its complete balanced system now no reason to implement new perks
about gear -> rather not but its not for 100% (again balance)

Perks - nope, we'll keep balancing the existing ones,
Weaponry - most likely yes (but only those from F1/F2), after the existing ones are balanced,
Maps - yes, but only one map will be running for PvP tournament at any given time, and map would be changed by: 1. automated cycle, 2. manually by admin, 3. players vote. Of course, new maps would have to be created first (only pure mapper work, no scripting required - I would deal with it).

PvE maps - no idea if it wouldn't create too much of additional lag. For now, any team camping one place too much will receive a pack of hungry deathclaws spawned straight on them. Fortunately, I haven't seen camping there so far, all games were fast and dynamic.

Yes, I agree. There will be an update soon, erm, today  :P It'll fix some bugs and make some adjustments to certain armors/weapons. There will be also some changes to sneak, as it seems pretty much useless atm. Changelog will be posted on our forum, so check it out later.

Try setting the starting points in the left top corner and the right bottom corner.

Very nice in overall , but the full fov kinda ruins gameplay for me and i am not talking about the fps drop. I think i will never ever see fit to play like this , i can't find one good reason how full fov makes the game more strategic or competitive other than more lulz.

I feel it the same, with this FOV, ambushes are almost non-existant. Moreover, I can hardly say whether I can or cannot hit someone due to low contrast of my display
Just saying.
Other than that, you guys really surprised me by the whole execution.

This FOV system is great for such server. Just imagine how the fight ON THIS MAP would look with 2238fov style.
Whole gampelay would be a lot more about camping/keeping fov positioned, more chaotic also (accident runs into each other in those short spaces). With so much envoirment hideouts from enemies fov it would by a mess. Now its veeery DYNAMIC, u need to cooperate with ur teammates and stick together in order to kill and not get killed. Action is fast and brutal. Its not town control simulator (where scouting, keeping fov etc is important) its instant action PvP game.

Ur just very used to 2238 solution.

There were few occasions to play pvp mathes like 5vs5 on 2238 on modified klamath map (there were a lot of barrels putted in everywhere so map was working similar to FO:battleground one) and it was a blind game - u were running blind with ur team thru those barricaades and baam suddenly two teams run into each other - nothing really cool to play.

Thousand people thousand opinions, I get it. We even had this kind of FOV on 2238 for some time. I personally think, it would be better without this all-seeing x-ray FOV.

Ambushes are still very much possible, you just have to use "unrealistic" tools to achieve the element of surprise. On 2238 it's "OH SHIT, we've just turned this corner and there's, like, 30 guys waiting there!", on FOB it's "OH SHIT, we just ran after this guy and now there's, like, 30 guys rushing us from the worst possible directions". It's just more arcade-like, nothing to feel offended about. Also, sneak ^_^ The only bad thing about FOB fov is the fact that you can't check your line of fire, hope there's some tool in FOnline that says "you can fire on this hex" or "you can't fire on this hex" when you click it, but it's no really the fault of the devs.

Well in the case when people play without a team and team speak or any other communicator , i suppose full fov has it's advantages , but definitely not better than " realistic " fov , so many aspects of combat just disappears. It is not my problem you made such a big map , what amount of people did you expect i find that interesting to know ?

Dynamic ? Right , countless times when players freeze and thinks what to do but anything that pops into mind doesn't feel right because the whole enemy team will know where are you running , when are you gonna change position and when you reload your weapon , eat a rocket or SS. Camping and keeping position is actually more rewarding , since those that make a move are usually punished unless it's some rush tactic or you get a surround on opponents because they made the first move(i've seen this some times now).

Well i am sorry that it should take some effort to locate opponents , it just makes sense , there is no excuse for that.

but for lulz it's okay.

btw i am used to good gameplay.

It's not that FOV was switched off because of a large map, it's that large map was made because no FOV was planned from the beginning. It's just a matter of getting used to it. Both modes have their advantages and disadvantages, as was written above, no FOV is more arcade-style and brings more dynamic gameplay. From my observations, most matches aren't longer than 2-4 minutes, and the majority is about 2 minutes long.

The server wasn't designed for 100 or 200 players, as I doubt that it can handle more than 40-50 players without causing some serious lags (not FPS drop, though, as it's caused by some bugs in client's scripts - not related to full FOV either).

Below:
Yup, small guns and energy weapons will get a boost (mostly damage boost). Sneak is just being balanced, so changes will be applied until it's ok. New maps won't be placed soon unless someone else makes them. This is mostly one-man-project and I'm too busy with bugfixing and balancing stuff atm.

This is really fun game I like it, but I think you need to balance energy weapons and small guns. Everybody just plays full health big gunners and the small guns just don't do enough damage. Also the motion detector needs to be slower at detecting really annoying to a sneaker, I mainly play sneaker.

Also maybe another map would nice, like have it switch between 3-4 different maps per battle.

That is my suggestions for this game, really awesome I like it, its just unbalanced between the weapon classes, it seems big gunner wins all.

I was thinking , some things don't make sense in both fov modes. I remember such scenario happening.

yeah this server is overrun by Big gunners and its piss me off >:c

here is my list what you guys should do

- Nerf bg.
- Remove motion sensor or make it less effective.
- add stealth boy.

- Not add stealth boy as it would make MS totally useless and sneak overpowered

BG is not overpowered.

Flamer has very short range.
Minigun has hits only like 60s except of course 1 hexes and is dependant on the armor you choose.
rocketlauncher is annoying yeah but still it's not that big a deal, just be a good fighter use brains.


in fact, small guns is very good as it is.  using molotov cocktails and/o Combat shot guns you can easily kick a BGers ass with alot of APs.

However SG snipers are a bit underpowered.

Yes, this server is based on the mod you posted the link to. It was written early in this year by John (fonline.ru: Miki) but the development was stopped probably because lack of time and maps.

I took his scripts (several thousands lines of code) and rewritten them to a fully-automatic tournament script, which can be attached to a map that has a given structure. The code is in a crude form and could be improved a lot but simply I don't have time for this. Some parts of UT mod were cut;  originally it allowed for a lot of customization (deathmatch/domination modes, respawns during the battle, changing respawn places, fraglimits, timelimits and so on), but it had few flaws - all was to be set up manually by an admin and various bugs existed. As I wanted to make an automated team deathmatch tournament out of it, I cut some parts to make the code easier and debugging much faster, so the customization is next to none right now. Of course, all can be done, but only if you have a large ammount of time and people willing to test it. I have no time, so you know the rest of the story :P

Source would be released if the original author agreed to release it. For me, it would have to be improved first.

Battle ground is wonderfull, but will be good something implement for team balance.
I have a little suggestion:

For example, you cant start game, if the condition wont be:
 n1 <  n2 = n1 + 1
 n1 >  n2 = n1 - 1
 n1 == n2

n1 - number of people in left room
n2 - number of people in right room

Or similar, later maybe recognition of builds and theirs suitable remove to weaker side.

in smaller players number improvemnt in fps is big but now we played in ~15 players and bug still appears so we need to search deeper.

new SDK revisions are full of bugs... especially current one :(

BROF doesn't work for grenades. It's good, just there was no info about it.

I'm not updating FOnline: Battleground as I'm too busy making stuff for Wasteland 2155. No updates = server dead, which is why it was shut down. Well, if there are players willing to play there, I can launch it in no time and keep it up. If not, then wait for a bigger update which will happen SOON (I mean: I don't have any plans to start working on it in the near future, but some day, yeah). Update will probably change whole map and equipment to high-tech setting; like SAD/Enclave tilesets and scenery, PAs APAs gauss pulse and vindicateurs.
