I intend this character to be a generalist: top gunsmith, can mine/make adv. alloys, good outdoorsman, decent PvE ability, and good repairman eventually (at 180%+).
Downsides will be a fairly wimpy carry weight, can't aim or crit, can't talk to traders, will be a pain pumping SP into only Outdoorsman before Lv. 6.

ST 05 TRAITS PERK PROGRESSION
PE 08 Small Frame Survivalist (@Lv. 5)
EN 06 Fast Shot Pathfinder
CH 01 Pathfinder
IN 10 TAG SKILLS Action Boy
AG 10 Small Guns Bonus Rate of Fire
LK 01 Repair Action Boy
Outdoorsman Living Anatomy
PROFESSIONS: Small Guns 3, (whatever)

Any comments or suggestions? Hopefully this is posted in the right section... I couldn't really decide between here and Game Help. Oh, and how you do you like that spiffy little template I made? ;)
-
If you play alone you should have charisma to talk to merchants or you will get bored.
About perks here is my opinion :
Living anatomy is useless. I would take 2x lifegiver instead of action boy. I would take awarness instead of survivalist.
But once again this is just my opinion for a good "solo playing" character.

I'll probably have another character for that sort of thing. Not an army of alts, but at least a barter alt. Also, I don't plan to play alone forever — just saying.

Useless? I assume because it's just not that much damage, or maybe doesn't work properly? Also, I suppose you're right, in the end I should have plenty of skill points without Survivalist, and Awareness is nice.
I'll consider trading Action Boys for Lifegivers. I've been mostly playing PvE in turn-based so far, which I know is slow, but RT is much more dangerous (I suppose that's where Lifegiver helps).
In any case, thank you for the advice!

Any char that needs alt to support it is a bad char.

I agree, you're right about the alts thing. Even before I read this thread again, I'd already reconsidered. Some people do seem to have all-or-nothing mega-snipers with CH 1 and whatnot... maybe they get their equipment from the PK/PvE they do.
So I changed my template:
=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=-=
ST 05 TRAITS PERK PROGRESSION
PE 07 Good Natured Survivalist (@Lv. 4)
EN 06 Fast Shot Pathfinder
CH 03 Pathfinder
IN 08 TAG SKILLS Lifegiver
AG 10 Small Guns Lifegiver
LK 01 Repair Bonus Rate of Fire
Outdoorsman ??
PROFESSIONS: Small Guns 3, (whatever)

I reduced IN by 2 and PE by 1, and got rid of Small Frame. That gives me a decent carry weight, allows trading and leaves room for a couple of companions. Replaced Small Frame with Good Natured.
I still feel I need that Survivalist boost, especially now. Maybe ?? should actually be Awareness, stupid as that sounds, but what else is really needed with this build? Or swap a Pathfinder for Awareness and get the final Pathfinder at 21.
I did the math. By level 21, I'll have Small Guns 180%, Repair 180%, Outdoorsman 150%, Science 100% (do I need more?), and 20-30 points left over besides (will probably use them to buff up Barter to a convenient level, higher than the 30ish it'll start at).
Thanks once again for the advice and critiques. This template looks (to me, for now) completely self-sufficient and pretty decent at everything it's meant to do.

I think Ive got a char with the same SPECIAL its good. Sometimes I miss aiming though.
-
I would get 10 IN and 8 AG. Also, I would get about 150% SG, 150% OD, 100% repair, 100% FA, and the rest into repair (about 200%). You will really appreciate the FA in PVE, even with 1 luck.
For perks:
Awareness
Pathfinder (2)
Lifegiver
BROF
Action Boy (2)
However, you should consider a build with 6 luck for BRD and, perhaps, toughness.

The best loner character is one that isnt alone...
If you get my meaning ;) ;).
JUST MAKE A LEADER CHARACTER!

isnt luck 1 very annoying? once ive played with an Energycrafter, and with luck 3 the laserpistols exploded often in my hands, smae phenomenom with SG and Bg?

I don't get it, I have luck one and I VERY rarely ever have a critical fail, and i have NEVER had my weapon es' plode.
-
AFAIK, luck doesn't affect your chance of a critical miss -- only the severity of it. Also, only misses can be upgraded to a critical miss. That means, for example, if you have an 80% chance to hit something, you are four times as likely to have critical miss than if you have 95% hit chance.

Well, i dont understand this char, maybe because i am gang player and i must have manufacture to join pvp..
But
Why agility 10? 6 is enough even for non junkie sniper and you dont want to pvp and you have 10.. i understand that you want to shoot quickly, but this is nonsense. If you want to take BROF perk, you need 7 ag.. this is bad number (at 7 ag you have same number of AP like in at 6sg), so take 8, and use 2 points from this to charisma, and let inteligence at level 10 (every crafter should be ready very fast)
And take sharpshooter perk:
1) you will get +2 PE (with cigarets you will have more than 50 hex range)
2) with sharpshooter you dont need to spend same amount of skill points to small guns skill to full aim
-
actually, 8 agility is fine in PvE, since most Humanoid NPCs have about 8 AP, allowing you to fire in turnbased without any real risk to you, if you time it in a smart way...
-
Does Str need to be above 4 for any special reason? Small Guns don't require more iirc.

Small Gunsmith 3 requires 5 STR, and so do some rifles.
Anyway, regarding further comments since yesterday, I've already made the character with AGI 10 and IN 8, and also Survivalist instead of Awareness. It probably won't be perfect, but that's all right. Thank you for the perk suggestions, I'll definitely keep them in mind.
As for First Aid... I might try to get that to 100, but then maybe I'm better off stocking up on Stimpaks, even if they aren't free. Needless to say, if the PvE I'm doing at higher levels isn't lucrative enough to justify the use of a few Stimpaks, it's probably not worth doing anyway except for XP.
-
I'm under the assumption that you can trick the SG3 NPC by using Buffout. Unless that has been fixed in a patch and I've not read an update post for it.
If it has been patched, then the 'how to make your first character' stickies really need updating, because they lead you to take 4str for a Small Guns build.
-
nope, an SMG burster needs 4 str, but a sniper needs 5 str, almost every single two handed small gun needs 5 strength to be used efficiently.
-
Well, I took One Handed, for better or worse, so I am ok and aiming for the .223 pistol.
Is that a 'no' to using Buffout to get SG3 craft also?

Buffout will work to raise your special points in order to get professions, yes.
-
Phew, I don't have to reroll :) Thanks.
-
well, you need 5 strength to use the .223 pistol... the 14mm pistol needs 4, the other pistols need 3...

Oh dear, I'll have to take +1Str Perk just to use a viable gun.. Baptiste is consigned to being a SG crafter I think.

There is still weapon handling.
-
weapon handling don't get you no extra carry weight, always useful for carrying materials, maybe next build I'll do I'll try out a 3str weapons handling character, will save me 2 stat points which I can put into other places, more important places...

Be sure to have big Endurance tho because usng guns that are too heavy even with the perk causes u to crit fail alot and apparently endurance helps prevent this
-
ahum, weapons handling, please read...

I have... I have also read where Roacher who took weapon handling and had plenty strength for the laser rifle but he was told because he had very low endurance he had alot of critical fails where it the guns would constantly blow up or some shit.
