Use the above methods for your first few levels and use the skill points gained to build your outdoorsman, science and repair up to atleast 40 each [the more the better]. It helps of course to have those skills tagged from the beginning. Once they are 40 or more you will be able to find useful crafting supplies in trash cans and will be able to pick up flints found laying around which can be made into primitive tools which can be used to chop wood. With a hammer you can mine ores and minerals out in the wasteland [completely random based on outdoorsman skill]. You can either buy your gathering tools or make them yourself [more xp that way].

For most things you will need to use the crafting table in a town. Crafting different things gives you different experience. It may depend on other skills and chosen profession what you can craft as well. Small guns skill I think needs to be 40% to start gunsmithing. Check your FIXboy for the requirements. Its under the PIPboy. I started out crafting 10mm's for close 60xp each! Thats much faster xp than anything else when just starting out.

Higher outdoorsman also helps you when you are out in the wastes looking for places to mine because you will be able to avoid many dangerous random encounters. You will always be outnumbered in the wasteland so unless you have over 100 hp and an extremely lethal weapon, I advise running everytime you are unable to avoid a random encounter. When crafting you want to stop and enter your own random places on the map, not the random places the game tries to stop you at.

Next tip, don't bother shoveling shit because there are better, faster, funner, and less degrading ways to make money, even at early level.

Next tip, don't bother shoveling shit because there are better, faster, funner, and less degrading ways to make money, even at early level.
Example 1: Loot vs encounters. It is more than easy to run around and let mobs kill each other, then loot the remaining corpses. Good easy way to farm and make cash.

Example 2: Look for noob friendly factions such as The Last Light. They will help you level, as well as get gear and cash.

Example 3 (last resort): Beg-troll. Beg people and try to be funny. Sometimes, if you are funny enough, people will give you caps. Also, sometimes if you are annoying enough, people will just give you money to get you off their case.

There are many other ways, but these are just a few fun ones.

Yes the FCP is great. And also, in my opinion, Opera still doesn't get enough credit for this. I bet over half of you new players don't even know that he is the one who created this heavenly tool. Shout-out to Opera! Keep up the good work my dude!

One of the best ways to get caps are slave runs. It was already mentioned but i think it can't hurt to throw in some more details:

Of course there are more ways to earn caps, like lifting boxes (http://fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/Lifting_caravan_boxes) or the gunrunner caravan quest for example. But (imo) with slaveruns you make the most profit in a short time.

Some tips in general to earn caps:

Get a Highwayman and a base near Gunrunners, invite multiple characters and make courier jobs - makes 250 caps per one travel.
