Mostly while we are on the wasteland we have two weapons in hands (close combat/long range, fast shooting/slow shooting etc.) so we can't have radio on.
Why we can't hear comunicates while radio is in invetory? For example we can hear "'sh..whe..shh..r you..shh' instead of 'shh..where are you..shh' because of the backpack - but we can still hear sth, that someone is talking on the radio, then we can take radio in hand and respond
We will hear only radio that was in hand last time (so while we have 4 radios with different channels we can still hear only one)
-
Deffinitely a good idea.
Maybe every other letter would have a chance of being replaced by a "." or "#" or something to simulate static. That way you could whip it out and say "Say again, over"
-
No, this idea suck. Radio should be swapped to ""'sh..whe..shh..r you..shh' instead of 'shh..where are you..shh'" when got it in hand.

lol.
Hm I think this is a bad idea, yeah I know that it would be easier but Fonline is not about things getting easier. You talk you have a possibility to chat in the damn wasteland and for a wastelander its an honour to hold it in his dirty hand.
-
It's a pain in the ass wasting a slot
-
And the only thing radios are really necessary for are for distress calls. I think you should have to put it in a slot to do a distress call, but just talking should not need a slot as it only takes away from combat.
-
I concur, you should be able to listen to the radio as long as it is in inventory and turned on.
Communicating, though, should require it being in hand at the moment the message is sent out.
Actually, another thing that would be interesting to have in-game is a separate "band scanner" item, giving a percentage chance to detect radio transmissions on different channels.
On the other hand, with VoIP being a far superior communication method... yeah.
-
I think you should be able to listen to the radio (and perhaps even talk to) while it's in the inventory. The catch? you have to talk louder than normal, and have to turn the volume up. The result is that you still whisper. but other people can hear what you whisper in the radio or what people say on the radio itself when close enough.
(lets say 2x normal whisper distance amount)
-
ooh but what if you had several radios on different channels ehh? it'd eventually get all fucked around since you dont get the names of the people talking.

If you look at the in-game model, I'd say it's one of those chunky late-WW2 radios (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCR-536 (http://en.wikipedia.org/wiki/SCR-536)) that definitely required a hand to operate ;)

A sugesstion is only for hearing a radio while in inventory, not talking.
In real world if we have walkie-talkie we don't have it always in hand, its on the belt and only when we hear sth or want to talk we are getting it to hand.
-
If it will be only possible to "hear" something from inventory, but not talking and distressing, then it's OK idea.
But this suggestion should be somewhere in the bottom of to do list.
-
Good Idea! There should be also some reserved channel. For example -Trade channel: 1
-
This is a good idea, definitely. Like in the real world, when you have a walkie-talkie in your pocket you are still able to hear if someone shouts a message to you. I also agree that the message should be a little unintelligible. +1 for this suggestion :)
-
If we could communicate through many channels, the channel number should be displayed before the message.
-
would make for a change of pace really, instead of paying attention to IRC, always found that to be a bit in the way really, if radio comm channels would be used globally, and you being able to hear them in inventory, one would never really be alone (channel 2 for ragespam and insults to your mother FTW)

or even more than that...
1. GLOBAL
2. TRADE
3. Local (near towns)
4. Help channel
etc.

The way I look at Radios having to be in your inventory is that it only takes away from your combat.
To explain my other post, if you are in a big faction, you are probably using some sort of chat program.
Even if you aren't using voice and are just typing in the chat program, it is a LOT easier than using a radio. This just gives a disadvantage to people that don't use that. The only thing that you would need it for in-game is to make a distress call, and that is why I said that it should only have to be in your active slots to make a distress call, since you can't make a distress with a chat program.
-
I also agree that the message should be a little unintelligible.
Would be nice if that depended on the actual distance from the source of the message. Don't know how this would work out in terms of resources required to handle so many channels, though.
Though it would be an awesome addition for new players. It is a communication venue, and communication is currently rather limited in-game. Given that FO is meant as multiplayer experience, this alone would greatly strengthen the game's appeal - as already mentioned, particularly to a new player.
Since it is something entirely optional, it would not force undue socialization on those that are not interested in it.
-
i'd actually like that one can pay attention to the radio even when in the inventory, would stop grinding for rep getting boring too fast...

Yes.

so, is that a yes of approval or a yes of disapproval?
Vote for me

Yes and yes, my IRC will only be free for another week. I'd prefer to use a radio in-game instead of switching between programs (which tends to cause client crashes, yes?)

PS: who says yes, I disapprove?? Its 'no, I don't approve."
Radios used in combat should use 2aps per msg, including distress calls.

What, mIRC?
It just nags you more. If that's a problem switch to HydraIRC

Distress calls are used while almost dead. So you don't have any AP

Such things will never happen.
a pity.. because that would give a real ingame atmosphere.
"local (near town)"
would spit out some ´faction defined messages´ near tc controlled towns, sure a repeating spam of faction related stuff.
already suggested somewhere.
"trade" tell us the town related offers who actually everybody shout in town (with less spam indeed, maybe some controlled board)
already suggested somewhere.
and also I would be tempted to listen at the "help" channel from time to time, just to help someone.
i know, utopic.
to the topic, i agreed that there is a unfairly disadvantage for people who can´t or won´t use outgame communication.
edit: and sending distress signal should use AP.

Unless your -0-20 hp surely.

Your post doesn't even make sense. You can't do distress calls when you are unconscious anyway.
-
-1 also, that would just give a clear disadvantage to people who don't have a chatting program.
Advantage is you don't have to swap windows, this isn't blue tooth. Maybe only distress calls cost ap as a compromise
-
As far as a "global channel" is concerned... why can't we all just agree on channel 0?
-
maybe craft an upgraded radio? with a head-set for example,
this way radio in the inventory will work,
this would make it easier
-
Think about this.
Could you talk on a radio inside of your backpack in real life?
Makes no sense.
-
Think about this
Isn't in the first post a sugesstion about hearing a radio not talking? Could you hear a radio inside backpack (or in the belt) in real life?
Makes sense ;]

Can you get minigun to hands and shoot in real life?
Makes no sense.

Sense? What fuckin' sense you see here? It's postapocalyptic science-fiction game.... calm down you all.

According to the fallout system, items in your backpack aren't all in your backpack. You wouldn't stuff a sword or sledgehammer in a backpack, you'd strap it to your back and side. Ammo may not be in a backpack, it could be on a belt. The fallout system treats the two hand idea as "This is what I'm gonna use, lets keep it real close". So two guns, one in each hand, could represent a gun in the players good hand and the other in a holster, gun in each hand, or both guns holstered. To further expand this thought, guns and caps, I'll have my gun holstered and my caps "tucked away" in hands reach (Kinda helps explain why hand items can't be stolen)
So I don't see how communications have to suffer if the radio is not in hand, because you don't need to toss it in your backpack. You can clip a radio to your belt and be able to hear things just fine and reach you hand over to tap the button and speak.
I like the idea of freeing that slot up from radios. Maybe take it to the next level, add a "Belt" slot to the inventory screen. So you can clip a radio to it, or hide your caps or ammo from thieves, and so on.
Radios used in combat should use 2aps per msg, including distress calls.
The fallout system, like dungeons and dragons, considers talking to be a "free action" be it in combat or not.
-
The belt slot idea sounds good, actually. Aren't they supposed to be upgrading FOnline to Van Buren type of grade? I seen the one video on the main page where it had 2 armor slots, so I doubt it couldn't be too much of a pain to add something like a belt slot for your radio. But hey, what do I know? :P
(Awaits trolls to pounce on said statement.)
-
Maybe you could hear the radio while it's in your inventory but not send messages... That seem logical to me.
-
Already done.
