Title: Screen effects
Post by: Sius on May 08, 2010, 12:41:40 am
Idea A:
When there is something happening to you, scroll text above your head will let you know whats going on.

- when you score critical hit the dmg indicator above you targets head will use bold or bigger font or both
- when you score crippling hit you will see it above your target (same as dmg indicator, different color)
- same with all other negative effects such as radiation, poison, getting robed (when robber fail you could get indicator above your head)
- same for karma/reputation + or - and exp gains

I'm lazy to use ingame screens so lets say the bunny is our target:

Regular
   - 4
  (\ /)
 (o.O)
 (").(")

Crit
   - 4
  (\ /)
 (o.O)
 (").(")

Crippling
    crippled left ear
            (\ /)
           (o.O)
           (").(")

Everything else
**someone tried to rob you**
+50 reputation with Disneyland
         radiated
        poisoned
       +350 exp
            (\ /)
           (o.O)
           (").(")

Idea B:
When the explosives goes kaboom whole screen starts to shake and combined with the audio its the powerful feature. My idea is to use such effects more often on various actions. Or maybe in general use more different effect so we can know whats going on even without the chat/combat log.

- when you get blinded, the whole screen will flash in white (maybe limit your FOV so when you will move your screen in 100+ hexes radius away from your char, everything will be covered in black until you come closer to it etc...)
- when you get hit, screen will flash in red in direction where the shot came from

Its obviously not a priority since its all about effects (that could be hard to implement) but even tho I still think such things should be there once beta is over.
PS: I really hope that bunny will be displayed correctly for everyone  8).

Seriously, a rabbit?

Also I don't really think it's usefull, when you just can watch your character or look at the message box.

Sure. But we can also see the dmg itself there, yet devs decided to put also dmg indicator ingame. I'm well aware that this is something that will be placed on the bottom of the TODO list, but it does not change anything about the fact that it would be helpful and kinda "modern" feature, that will make things little more spicy.

Edit: Also problem with current "watch your character or look at the message box" is that your character shows you nothing and message box is a single colored mess and even when its expanded its pain in the ass to search for what happened there. With this you could be always aware whats going on and message box could serve as a log. And if we rule out screen effects and stick just to "above head indicators" then I think it could be easier and faster to implement it really soon.

I really would like to see the damage indicator and maybe the exp indicator, much easier to use then that damn message box.

*thumb up* :)

Simple dmg indicator is already ingame.
FOnline config -> combat tag -> "Damage indicator on head" -> just change delay to 3000 and you are rdy to go.

It's not a bad idea, but I don't like the "red flash when you get damage". Since you get easily damage in this game, you're going to transform FOnline into an epilepsy machine  :(

Sorry, i voted for uselessness when i read about the blindness effect, but then i realized the potential behind the regular/crit/crippling/everything else part.
You should really remove the blindness suggestion its just stupid, and misleading :/
The red flashing is really hard to do, not worth the effort atm/low priority :/

The critical damage in bold is pretty nice, it's usually hard to read "critical hit" during fight, while this option would be immediate.

Vote pool is kinda "for fun" thing anyway. This suggestion can be divided into 2 parts. Screen effects and above head indicators. Screen effects have great potential too and they can be implemented in a appropriate way (+ remember it can always be on/off feature). Above head indicators should be easier to get ingame and they are way more useful ergo higher prio. But both has something to offer.

I somehow like it (Especially the exp gain above the character), it's very "casual" but it's seducing :)

I don't agree with the screen flashing on damage.  But the shaking screen from explosives (if the explosives are on-screen at the time) would be cool.

Also, more floating text over your head when events happen would be nice.

Yeah I like it, especially because of all hits/chat and everything spams the textbox.
and in the middle of a rt fight watching your message box is suicide.
Obviously this needs an on/off button. Also, im really for the idea that you know where the bullet came from.
Currently some sneaky sniper can just randomly shoot you out of your fov. and you will never find him. But it should be pretty obvious to know where that bullet came from.

yep, the general direction from where the bullet came from, so that you can take defensive measures.
