I know the devs have said that even with 3D models, the backgrounds and things will stay 2D, which I think is fine. We'd lose way too much Fallout feel if it was all 3D. But are there ideas in mind for using 3D models for things that would not have been so easy before? The main thing that comes to mind is the train. The way it is now, the conductor tells you that the train is there when there is obviously no train visible. It seems like a 3D model of the train could be put in and it would look really cool, while at the same time lessening confusion.
I have no experience with modeling or implementing anything, but I think there would at least be one person willing to make the train, if not a few that could be part of a contest. And again, I don't know anything about implementing, but all it really needs to do is move from the edge of the map to the center of the station, wait, and then move to the edge of the map and disappear. You could still board the train through the conductor.
I didn't put this in suggestions because I don't even know if it's possible or if anyone would be willing to make this train.

Well, of course it's possible if someone makes a good train model. (or tries to rip the train of the Van Buren Startupscreen :P )
But it's not really high priority at the moment I think, it works fine for me imaging that there is a train, even when I don't see it. ;)

We will not add 3d models for anything other than critters.

Why? I mean what your saying is BS anyways lexx since they will have models for weapons and players. How is a train any different than any other sprite?
-
It is not bullshit. We only add models for critters. That this includes weapon models should be obvious, even for you. In case you just wanted to troll, I'll give you a warning.
There is no reason to add a train as 3d model. The train would be visible only from one side anyway and then you can get better and more fallouty results with rendering it into 2d and overpainting it by hand. Same goes for all other scenery.
-
You shouldn't discourage people so quickly by saying there won't be any other 3d models when 2d versions of 3d models are a valid option. Items dropped on the ground still need unique images and new backgrounds/scenery items will eventually be needed. I wasn't trying to troll you but you should reconsider how you respond to people, you're too quick to dismiss people.

can we atleast get the red outlines added?
-
Red outlines are added. If you can't see them, it's either a bug or you have a old graphic card.

So does this mean that when 3d player characters are added there is a chance they wont have a redoutline also? yikes...

It would be nice to have 3D terrain, I love the isometric view, but sometimes I would like to zoom in and take a good look at some of these 3D models. I think I'm gonna render a map in 3D with Google's Sketchup and see if I can't change anyone's mind on this issue. My programming skills are currently at 0%, and it seems like it would be a pretty huge overhaul to the game engine to make it work, but doing the modeling is easy.
-
Don't bother, Lexx said nothing else would be in 3D than critters. Actually, he's right. Sceneries and maps can be tremendous and in better quality with the good old sprites.
-
What about weapons/armors/food/drinks etc.? I've seens somewhere new 3D sprites of them making by someone from forum.
-
Pandemon, you should check http://www.fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/3d_graphics_development_tracker
-
I was saying about that, so wouldn't be it implemented? Why?
-
mmm... I think Izual means critters, players and equipment or maybe something is changed? :)
-
What guys mean is:
ONLY critters will be changed. But you have to remember, that armor and gun is also a part of some critters. If we gonna make player character 3D, we also have to add a model for every armor and weapon. Otherwise youll be all just a bunch of bluesuits with nothing more than fists.
-
Adding a weapon/armor on critter sprite doesn't mean that in equipment these things will have new design.
-
Atm I do not think that train or any other 3d model other than armor/weapons/critter/players should be implemented. And as Lexx said, 2d sprite of a train should be better to add, I think it would look better aswell.
And if there are to be other 3d models implemented it should be more useful stuff (can't think of anything right now >.<)

Basically all that is heavily animated should be in 3D ans the rest in 2D. (Critters, maybe cars)
But here i see people talking about train, is it visible on the map? Cause i never seen it right now.

No.

The only time it would be visible is when it arrives in a town and wait for 20 ingame minutes (i think) then it goes for the next town.
-
It would be nice to have a 2D train pop up when it arrives. Doesn't even need to be animated, it could just appear. I don't have the know-how, but someone should work on that sprite.
-
Don't suppose it would be possible to add the Arcanum train graphic in? Unless its too steam punk for the setting.
-
I have an idea, the slavers actually can see the tatoo on theyr forehead!

That would be so small and insignificant that you wouldn't see it.

:( But think about it. Take a look at devs video, whenever you open the character window, your character is shown in a close-up. Would it really be that hard to see it?
-
Alright on the close up I suppose it is possible.
I have a question about 3D Models: Will it be possible to have them fade out when they escape your FoV, like normal models? As of right now, they are in your FoV and then just immediately disappear or come back, they don't fade away.
Also, I saw... Rusty I think it was messing around with models in NCR. One looked like the normal rat from pre-wipe/Fallout 2, but only slightly different, but I think it was a 3D model. If that was 3D model it looks really good and almost exactly like the original.
