Yup I went thru the wiki and looked at those new 3d models... I hate to say it but as a BIG old school fan of the Fallout series (since its been released) I do not like Van Buren or the 3d models on the wiki, they do not look like they belong or have that "Fallout quality." I'm actually still impressed by how the 2d graphics of Fallout 1 and 2 look highly realistic from the guns to the landscapes to the gore... it's PERFECT. And trying to CHANGE Fallout will not make it Fallout... no offence but you might as well call it something else if you plan on using 3d models since it won't be "Fallout" it would be something like Fall-Out 3d... Sorry again but even the 3d rats and rad toads (and the other new critters) look bad and out of place...
Sorry I know you don't have to take my "suggestion" seriously, but I highly suggest not replacing the skins from the original Fallout to be 3d... Van Buren failed and the coding and work to make it work in the Fallout engine is going to be a big headache for nothing. You guys aren't getting paid for this (it will take years to make this a 3d game) and Fallout Online is great right now (almost perfect!) and I highly suggest simply trying to make the game experiance better and more interesting (more quests, locations, etc expand Fallout 1 and 2) instead of trying to CHANGE Fallout...
The old school graphics and engine worked well enough to make and keep Fallout 1 and 2 a constant hit even in 2010 so yeah it just seems a little like a bad idea to try and do what Interplay failed at: Turning Fallout 3d.... we've all played Tactics and Fallout 3... it just isn't the same as Fallout 1 and 2... I'm just suggesting to drop the idea of turning anything from Fallout into 3d... it will ruin the game.

Sorry Man, But You Can Always Play the Ol'd Single Player. That isnt 3D, But FOnline wants to go 3D It will be WAY Cooler, But It wont be 2D. I Say we go Ahead, And dude its WAAAAY Too late to be saying to keep it oldschool, The Russian lad's have been working on this for Months.
So Screw you Bucko!

I can understand your doubts about the new critters, it's always hard to accept new changes to a thing you already know many years.
If you ask me, I also like the graphical stlye of the old critters more, but see how much new possibilities could be introduced with 3d/2.5d objects.
If one wanted to implement new weapons in the goode' ol' Fallout 2 engine a whole bunch of graphics needed to be drawn/generated, a whole lot of work just for one single change. With the 2.5d critters, it is really much more easier and opens new ways of adding content to FOnline. ;)

That's why we are trying to make models look like the ones in fallout. Even if the graphics are in 2d in the original game, they come from a 3d model.
look at this
(http://images2.wikia.nocookie.net/__cb20071006023628/fallout/images/e/e1/TITLE.GIF)
What if we had access to the original game models and could use them in the game? would it look bad and out of place like you say?
I think it would not. If we manage to create models and animations similar to the one in the game it could be awesome.
And if the guys from the original Fallout team could have used the technology we have today to make the game run those 3d models in real time back in 1997, don't you think they would have done it?
-
This game can't progress without 3d, it's a moot point.
-
well its just a suggestion lol but we can only hope that it looks good and that the server doesnt get laggier or something cuz of the 3d models. I personally think that the game is popular bcuz its fallout 1 and 2 but online its almost the exact same thing as the single player experience but your friends are there CHANGING this into a 3d experience might not be a good idea and it wont be the same game they had the tech for it back in the Fallout 1 day (aimed shots are in 3d, talking heads, intro vids, etc the 90s were the peak for 3d tech) and if they wanted to make it 3d they would have... your risking alot by changing something that everyone likes... if it goes 3d it might take a very long time to get stable and there might be alot of crashes and down times you run the risk of losing your popularity... it might not actually be as good but you can always just change the name of the game and make moulah off of it lol... its a big risk and im sure its been said but shit its a big risk... fallout online isnt "broken" so why "fix" it and if ur guna get mad at someones suggestions then lol screw u go live in a box away from the opinions of the world

Just bring back the old ants-- the old ants looked like goofy things from THEM! except smaller; the new ants look like termites.
Maybe keep the 3D ant models and call them termites- give them poison spit or something.

awsome idea!
-
just give me the red outlines back
e: seriously, it took me like 10 seconds to find the goddamn rat attacking me because it was hidden behind a wall
-
if it goes 3d it might take a very long time to get stable and there might be alot of crashes and down times you run the risk of losing your popularity...
The FOnline engine uses only graphics and sounds from Fallout 2. The game is on a completely different engine. Nothing to do with Fallout 2. In fact, you can already see we have 3D stuff and no crashes were caused by it*. This engine is actually capable of doing every item and character in 3D if we ever wanted to. And it's not perfect right now. Every player has identical bluesuit and we can't change it because we have no other animations. We can't use shovel on shit while in metal armours because there's no such animation, to name one example. Black strong mercenaries can't run because there are no animations. NPC thugs can't use half of the weapons because they don't have the animations for it. It's all limited to what is in Fallout 2 graphics and by going 3D we can make our own animations for everything if we want.
* - To my knowledge, crashes started way before there was any mention of 3D.

exactly!, and to be able to create our characters looks other then just haveing short or long hair dosent hurt nether, and slaves/mercs who can use weapons other then what there skin is limited to, this will improve alot of things, and as to the best of my knowlege, there shouldent be any changes other then the improved graphics and NPC's, theres no downside to anyone, exept for anyone who like the old "features" better then the improvments

Did you ever played Van Buren tech Demo? Because i think it's keeping the good "Fallout quality."

Along with the fact of making high quality 2d animations are a pain in the ass to make. Definitely when you'd need hundreds for a mmorpg.

This is pretty funny, if you keep in mind, that the server crashs approx once an hour right now.

The old sprites were already made from anno 1997 high-poly 3d models. And the best way to create sceneries is to render them in 3d instead of drawing.
So 3d IS Oldschool an that's why Fallout looks that good.
However, it's really bothersome to convert new renders into sprites, nevermind drawing them. So, for the sake of new content, we must allow 3d to enter the stage.
What bothers me, is the capability of the server to support the data flow caused by 3d. Perhaps i'm in err, and the dataflow doesn't change at all, but people with older hardware could face a problem with their graphics.
Also, current 3d animations suck. They're perhaps good as placeholders. Depending on user's hardware, they don't have outlines or shadows. It's not just a cosmetical problem, but a problem of gameplay as well as it seems. (hiding behind the wall, targeting...). Van Buren critters also look disconcerting to Fallout veteran players, perhaps it would be wise to add new 3d critters instead replace the old ones completely, like ants or rats.
There's of course a possibility to model new critters, which look exactly the same as old sprite ones.
-
Honestly, I love the classic 2D Fallout, but that 3D doesn't sound so bad, for some reasons:
- As many people said, it allows new content.
- It doesn't kill post-nuclear-fallout style, but look well-mixed with the isometric scenary.
- It looks cool.
The only thing I hope is that they add 3D ONLY when they are sure of what they do, all is well-skinned, all animations are completed, etc...
-
I like have 3D models but in all. As long it don't come at the cost of the gore of fallout. That's probably one thing made fallout fun for me. The many ways people can die. I want the gore look as good or better on 3D.
-
lol im convinced now to have faith in the 3d lol but i agree that they shouldnt remove old critters or items like rats and ants or the guns but add new ones ala everyone elses opinion, sounds great. And yeah i have the Van Buren tech demo and have had it for years (get it from nma-fallout.com search for it) its uh... well... uh... kinda looks like fallout tactics (decent game its just not a pure rpg) and well while playing you can tell why it got scrapped they just used the wrong engine for it they should of used the fallout tactics engine to make a fallout 3 that would have been pretty good.
aslong as they dont completely change the whole fallout 2 look by changing the whole game into 3d it will be fine. Add new 3d crap but keep the old stuff there too. I personally dont care if I can custom my char in 3d or whatever or change its hair, I don't really care at all.
As long as its still Fallout and they maintain that its fine. nuff' said lol. Let's hope for the best!
-
Well I feel that the 3D models will definitely take away from the feel of the game, i dont see why if they want better models to use the ones from fallout Tactics. The deathclaws for example in this game are hardly scary in comparison to those evil things on Fallout 1 and 2.
I say stick with the old graphics until the 3D models are good enough...not rush the design to get them implemented faster. I'm sure most fallout fans would rather play with the old models than any new ones unless they were perfect....plus what about all of the death animations, are they going to be writing new ones, or keeping the old ones...i doubt it. And all of the carefully drawn armor graphics are now going to look like some sort of WOW inventory screen (not that i play) which is just not at all what this game is aiming for...well i hope not
The fallout graphics will always be the best, in my opinion it still has better graphics than most of these crappy games released these days. Programmers lack the time and willingness to sit down, design, and build decent character graphics like back then, Interplay knew what they were doing and we shouldn't mess with their ultimate ways.
USE TACTICS GRAPHICS IF YOU ARE DESPERATE JUST DON'T TAKE AWAY MY BURST KILL ANIMATIONS! ;D
