So it's my last resort to post on the forums. I've searched wiki as well as these forums on exactly how to gather them. I spent a long time finally finding them near necropolis (one to be exact).
Now that I have found the orange plant, I can only gather fruits from it. There is no use on option with the knife, I can't attack it, I also can't use it from inventory as I read some where. Every time I try to use the backpack icon and click on knife, it just says "That does nothing."
This is getting frustrating, again posting here is my last resort, someone please help me.
It's probably something simple I'm overlooking I'm sure.
P.S. My outdoorsman skill is 44%. I read somewhere someone said 40% required, however I could not find this in wiki.

You should find brown mutated plant. Then, everything is true, use knife on it, by holding mouse and on "backpack". You'll get 1 fiber, and you can repeat action till you reach 20 or more gathering cooldown. Try to find it anywhere in mountains location.

its an orange plant (like corn stalks)
look at around of klamath

I usually find it on white parts of the map. Near mountains, but not exactly on them.
You are looking for the orange/red plant.

If you are living close to NCR go 2 squares west then straight down 1 square. Then run around the top right corner of that square. There aint much chance of finding a plant but atleast it isn't so far away from NCR.
