You can play on LAN but there is an app that let's you play LAN over online https://www.tunngle.net/en/  (https://www.tunngle.net/en/) I haven't tried it but I'm heard about it a while back. If you decide to use it, post how it worked out for you because I'm curious myself just don't have the time to test it.
