THQ are giving away steam keys. The link below actually routes to a facebook page, so if you can't be bothered with a Steam account and a Facebook account, don't waste your time trying or complaining here.
Also, the link doesn't work on mobile browsers AFAIK.

This one works.

Quite nice and atmospheric game. Very railroaded though and it doesn't do the book justice. Awesome graphics, especially at the end, that was stunning. Thanks for the link, Gunduz!

So what is this exactly? just kind of a zombie shooter? or whatever tf those things were? ( just watched youtube vid)
or is there more to it?
-
The world is set in Moscow, 2033, a couple of years after the war. It is set in the moscow metro (duh), the player has to go through many different metro stations. Mutations of the wildlife occured, so you have to shoot some monsters. Oh, you also shoot Nazis (never gets old) etc. Don't know where you saw Zombies in it, though.
-
It's just raining free games, got 3 with my 7950 purchase and now this ;D
-
It's a good game, reminded me of halflife 1.
-
Wow thanks! I was going to buy it one of theese days....

Think of the game as STALKER meets Half-Life. It's pretty much that - you play this Russian dude named Artyom (don't even try to pronounce it if you know nothing about Russian language basics - you will make yourself look like an idiot) based on some book that I haven't read set in a post apocalyptic world where the surface is radiated and stuff. People have taken cover in metro stations however there are still mutants and alike, so you will be going around shooting mutated stuff while also stealthily taking on humans like bandits and such baddies. In some areas, for example the surface, you will need a gas mask. Your gas mask requires filters, these filters can be used up, so you have to keep an eye on your watch to see if your filter is still filtering anything. You can also take off the gas mask because it can break in combat making it useless. If you don't use a gas mask in such areas, you... Well... You die, what else did you think would happen? It is said that ammo is scarce however I have found myself running on 90 shotgun bullets, 60 pistol rounds and a very nice stack of 100+ automatic rifle rounds, full stack of grenades and maxed out throwing knives while barely buying anything. And that is on the hardest difficulty (Well, not really, there are 2 ranger difficulties which remove HUD and make 2 shots lethal to everything - you and your opponents). Also, you get military grade munition which can be used to dish out extra damage with your automatic rifle. But that's not all, these pre-war rounds are also used as a currency in the whole metro system - you can buy new weapons and upgrades, gas mask filters, medkits, grenades, exchange for standard ammo. Also, I did mention medkits. It's kind of a strange design choice, since you do have health recovery just like you'd see it in boring titles like Call of Duty. Medkits take quite a lot of time to inject which means you have to put away your weapon, pull out the syringe and stab it in yourself. It's not that handy, since you can just shoot the enemies and wait in cover for your health to recover. I highly recommend you play the game on higher difficulties or else your enemies will turn into bullet magnetic sponges that seem to die only once they receive a critical amount of mass of lead by which in the laws of physics should make your target explode due to the previously mentioned critical mass.
It's not a perfect game, but it's great. Give it a try. It's free for now, after all. ;)

Thanks, will try the game

and I paid 70 euros for this when it was released...
Hahahaha. I've paid 2,50€ for it on a steam sale and even this I still regret.
Extremely linear, with scripted scenes every 10 meters and the rest of the game is simple shooting. Played it a few hours, then stopped and deinstalled. Sadly, due to this, I even lost the mood to read the book. Probably should have read the book before trying the game.

It's super linear shooter with scripted events, that's what makes it halflife ish. I loved the small details like gasmask lenses fogging up in the cold.

Consumer victim.

What are u talking about? The game was great, it is on of the few shooters I really enjoyed. I played it dozens of times.
-
And I stopped after the nazi map, because map atmosphere alone isn't making a game for me. Too linear, stupid checkpoint save system, too many scripted sequences, so much wasted potential. The game could have been great if they wouldn't have sticked to the book, and instead created their own main character, made it possible to traverse the metro "free form" to visit locations / stations more variable, etc. It is the base for a great stalker-like pseudo rpg, but instead they did a boring railroad shooter (I played better ones). Oh well.
-
Had one of the best ending sequences I've seen in a long time, the scripted scenes were cinematic and the voice acting was great. It was a nice change from the usual open world directionless quest driven crap.
-
I played it on realistic(?) and ended up with no more gas mask filters on the part where you're outside for the first time, no other savegames... rage-deinstall.
Otherwise good game, when I'm in the mood I'll reinstall it someday and make a savegame every 30 min...

Or maybe you could have just downloaded a savegame with gas mask filters?

Read the books, read the fiction, played the game and Lexx is right, this should have been a RPG.
A Fallout-style one.
-
This game is the awesome's solo game who i have playing you can trust me this is a fucking good game!
-
This thing ate my GPU and shat it out at first I only had 1 Frame per 5 seconds lol then I lowered all the settings maybe 5 frames per seconds.
This shit is like crysis hungry.... Thankfully I bought a new computer and have a GTX 260 waiting to be installed on it when it gets here.
I pity the fool who plays this on an integrated GPU :D.
-
Seriously? I did the english localization for it and our testing pcs were garbage and it ran smooth.

The book is basically the same heavily scripted thingy like you have in the game, relying on deus ex machinas all the fucking time, linear. Hell, the basic idea of tunnels and metros - they are all linear. I don't get why everything these days has to be some boring open world game. You play Artyoms story and he didn't explore the metro system for random things and instead had to do his mission.

138 HD space.
2.0 GHz duo core
nvidia integrated 6150SE nforce 430
2 gigs of ddr2 ram.
How garbage exactly are we talking here? Mine's radioactive for christ's sake.

The Vaultdweller had to find a waterchip and destroy the mutant threat, what was quite linear task. But i don't remember Fallout to be strictly linear.
A book on contrary to the game needs to be linear. So they simply made a book into a game, not the universe of it.
But the book also have a map of the Metro, which suggests, that the quest of Artyom as a part of something big. Something that inspired people to write their own Metro stories. It has abandoned, "mentally dangerous", irradiated, infested stations. Sure, Artyom hadn't need to explore the system to find some puzzle parts, like knowledge like mutant sterility in Fallout, artifacts, arcane technology like bunkers or cars or weapon systems, as he hadn't much time or motivation to do it - but this would be a great stuff for a RPG.
Cry more about open world, but this is a reason why you played RPGs and Fallout in particular.
-
Lets just wait for Metro Last Light and see what happens there. It will also have multyplayer(thx the vauldweller for that)

The difference is that the vaultdweller had a huge portion of postwar california to explore, and had to investigate in the nearby settlements to find out where to get the waterchip. If you as a player didn't know about the location of the chip, it is only natural that you will explore the cities and NPC for hints. Artyom on the other hand is in a comparably tiny, cramped location with a clear goal. There would be no single reason to randomly explore other metro stations.
I haven't "cried" about open world games, only that I get tired of them. I haven't played Fallout because it is an "open world" either, but because I was/am fascinated by the world, the atmosphere and the music. I wouldn't give a damn if the game would be more linear.

I see.

Right, because the game followed the plot of the book, freely. You had a ride in a scripted rollercoaster and no choice to explore or at least, take a fork. Which is a shame IMO, really.

This is the metro map:
It is huge, with lots of corridors and stations. It would be so easy to define the start station and the target station and leave everything in between as choice to the player. You still get your loved linear corridors, but also lots of crossroads, where you can change your travel direction to the left, right, forward or backwards. I'd prefer this anytime over how the game turned out now- heavily scripted and without any choice at all.
-
And why must every game nowadays be "open" like you describe it? Would Super Mario be a better game if had an open world and was less linear? No, it's still pretty darn fun. Look, I have nothing against open world games, I just don't see what's so inherently bad with a game that is meant to be linear. I too would like a game where I could go through those stations at my own whim because I like the world the author created. But that doesn't mean that I can't enjoy a linear game aswell.
-
I didn't said every game has to be open. I said that Metro 2033 wasted lots of potential, because it is horrible scripted and tries to take the book 1:1 and that shit could have been done better- like with my suggestion above.
Also- nope, I didn't found the game to be fun at all, or I would have finished it at least once.
-
I have to say I agree with Surf, but I also have to mention it would be cool if the game actually had some freedom along the lines of, lets say, Artyom has to get some supplies before he ventures further in the metro tunnels. These sections possibly could have been done in a limited area but still be rather free - given a map of the surroundings, points of interest and a side objective. It wouldn't really break the game's linearism thingy going on but potentially could have improved the game's experience alot.
-
I basically love the option to scavenge around in such themeded games. That started with fallout 1, then f2 then STALKER, then f3, F:NV etc etc. I just love to explore abandoned post-apo buildings and ruins and collect stuff and shoot evil creatures or raiding humans. So yes, it would be a good idea to have a bit more freedom in metro2033, but the game is well done the way it is IMO.
-
By the way, how does subway venture in Falloutverse? Would anyone build a Vault in a subway station?
-

Vault in subway? Why not. Actually nearly all subway stations in Moscow/Saint-Petersburg are made as nuclear Vaults.
-
I don't get why everything these days has to be some boring open world game.
Boring open world? That combination of words doesn't make any sense to me. You would prefer linear as it is more '''exciting''? You poor confused person you.
If everything was linear it would be a movie, and not a game.
-
More options are always good, having another choice to make, pathway to direct yourself etc. etc. just simply can't be bad. I will not argue that the game is bad the way it is, but everything can be improved upon, there is always something, no matter how well the game is praised or is for someone.
-

And this is why they are awesome. I liked the construction of Gostiny Dwor blast doors, btw, they are shaped like a wedge to withstand the surface explosion.;D
However, the stations are a bit underequipped to last more than a week, especially when everything gets flooded IRL... I think a Fallout version of Russian Vault will cope with this problem.

Btw, probably the only reason I'd install and play Fallout 3 again is because it allows you to freely explore a big ruined city infested with mutated creatures and raiders. I especially loved the metro tunnels in FO3. It was practically the only thing I liked in a game which sucked in general, but I really enjoyed it.

Soviets had the best architects, it's a shame so many buildings were lost to ww2.

As i know both middle-age Soviet subways: Moscow and Saint-Petersburg ones were built in 'Palace' style. Kinda beautiful piece of underground art. ;)
