Title: NPC Bounty Hunters.
Post by: Brujah on December 13, 2012, 04:12:36 pm
The idea works much like NPC mercenaries.

You can pay caps for different bounty hunters to go after players in random encounters, once on bounty, each time that player gets an encounter there will be a 5% chance that it will be a bounty hunter looking for him.

This is barely any useful for grief against PVP alts, but it adds some nice drama for PVE players who hunt and farm often.

As soon as you enter the Bounty Hunter enc, the NPC will say "<charname> sends his regards" or something like it so the player knows who hired the killer.

To hire a bounty hunter, you go to an NPC somewhere (preferably places with high crime such as Reno and Den) to choose which kind of bounty hunter you want to hire, a rough example:

Weak melee NPC: 300 caps.
SG weak NPC: 600 caps.
Relatively strong SG NPC: 1000 caps
Relatively strong EW NPC: 1800 caps
Strong BG NPC: 3000 caps
Really strong BG NPC: 6000 caps
Almost unkillable avenger/gatling NPC: 15000 caps

To avoid exploits, you cannot loot any of the Bounty Hunters.

I'm not sure if it's possible to add these special encounters to specific players who were targetted by a certain hired NPC, it would surely add a bit more drama and tension while travelling the World Map though, especially when the only real reward to the player who kills a bounty hunter instead of just running away is the fact that he will never see that one again.

Its probably hard to implement so devs won't even bother

Yeah and like who would pay 15K for someone to have 5% chance to encounter a mercenary

It's much harder to read another post made by Cyber Jesus itself. When if you consider to stop acting like a brahmin in NCR pen, you may ask people about encounter possible to get after finishing "Man's Job" quest, which is working almost as one described in first post.

It's not really your choice to be attacked or not.

Sounds abusive, having a price on your head is supposed to be a hassle, not a reward.

Well, they already have a system for this but using players as the bounty hunters, but they took it off or something...  Don't quite remember what happened with that.  But it's the sheriff in Hub that has the dialogue if you wanna take a look.

This sounds like a load of... actually its not that bad. I mean its been done in previous Fallout Games, in Fallout 1/2 if you had very negative karma then a posse of do-gooders would come a looking for your evil ass and try to kill you where as if you had very positive karma then a horde of mercenaries hired by an unknown person or persons would show up and try to kill you for being awesome and these guys would go from morons in leather jackets who couldn't hit the broad side of a barn to trained professionals wearing military grade combat armor (Atleast thats what I remember)
Also in Fallout 2 when you start doing the Deputy/Police missions in Redding you end up hunting down Frog Morton and after you gun him down his brothers will start hunting YOU down. Although it would be alot harder since this is a multiplayer game and assigning these encounters to specific players could be difficult.

I was thinking about something like this long time ago... but it would require once again touching encounter code - that thing is horrible

You could also add some Well Armed NPCs in to the caves, there was some sort of it in  F2, cant remebre their name.

Yeah this suggestion seems like it would bring some fun. Though, they should still provide something on death.

I remember reading about it in the FO2238 manual, tho i never managed to find a way to hire bounty hunters.

I know that a while ago some Spanish dude on the radio calling himself "The Sword" was paying people to kill thieves who robbed him and his buddies. That was kind of entertaining for like 5 minutes.
