Wasteland 2 Camera demo (http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=_q3bk5os1eQ&feature=relmfu)

Hype
-
yep looks really cool in my opinion though the music bumbp lets the what the composer of the fallout OST does on this , i think it will be magic
-
Not even true orthographic projection and as a result pretty narrow screen estate on the map. lul
-
lol thats a pre alpha status surf i know u are the oldschool classic rpg fan and wish that it would come out in 2D :P
-
Orthographic camera progression has nothing to do with the graphics being 2/3d

It kind of has because orthographic projection makes most sense if you cant rotate camera.
Which is usually caused by game being 2D faking 3D. Or if you edit a 3D model it's helpful.
But in the end it's not how the human eye works so I don't get why would you want it in a
game which is full 3D and can use a normal perspective. If camera can get close, change
angles etc it would look unnatural because things that are far away would be same size as
things that are close.
-
There are enough games that use exactly the orthographic projection with 3d while having rotateable camera. It juat gives Imo a much better overview over the area , is consistent and better for squad based strategy games (isnt Wasteland 2 supposed to have this?)
The same weird narrow field of view is (amongst others) one of the reasons why I find the Jagged Alliance remake is such a steamy turd.

Could you give some examples?
How making things that are far away smaller your field of view narrower? Seems opposite to me.
I agree for strategy it's worse, but maybe in Wasteland you will be able to switch it, all we can
see for now is a crappy short video.

Oh yes, Working with Unity and being a Wasteland fan.. Im definitely excited for this Project.

I sincerely hope one can switch to orthographic projection too, but I doubt it. Now, even in a Jagged Alliance 2 (ok, this is 2d) shot, in 1024x768 I can view lots of details and stuff.

As said, this is a 1024 etc screenshot. I instantly recognize, where I can put my soldier(s) behind cover, behind walls etc. Everything is orthographic, I know instantly what a wall is, where my soldiers can take cover, I recognize all the buildings even in such a small screenshot. etc. In the Wasteland 2 screenshot? LOL! It just looks like a mess. Now, compare that "overview" from a crappy 1024x768 shot to a supposed to be "new" game:

Do you notice something? Now please tell me you would 100% totally know where to send mercs etc. to put behind cover etc if the W2 game would be in that perspective. it is a mess.
In orthographic projection I would instantly know where a wall is to go behind. W2 is again, a turd, in the incarnation we know it atleast right now.
Could you give some examples?
I guess you never owned a playstation? Final Fantasy Tactics is an excellent example (even though there are 2d sprites in regards to the 3d world :P ), lots of other similar games (breath of fire) and many wargames (switching to such a perspective in combat) too.
Or do you want to tell me that non orthographic perspectives are more "realistic"?
-
Surf, ever heard of camera view? It solves a lot of problems in a TB game, you'll most probably will be able to rotate the camera, zoom in and zoom out that way allowing you to see every rat corner and inch of map where to move characters and etc. etc.(with the ability to center)
It's pre-alpha anyway.
-
Graphics look too cartoon-ish imo
-
I think I get your point Surf, but i don't think that in Case of W2 it has anything to do with type of projection it's more a thing of map design. I don't see how ortographic projection itself would make things less cluttered.
Or do you want to tell me that non orthographic perspectives are more "realistic"?
Yes.
-
@Surf, why dont you tell your opinion on wasteland 2 forums? I know you really love, prefer old schoold games (me too) but w2 is not bad and this is only first screenshot/short video from alpha and I think they will improve design and other features. Camera is okay and it is standard these days games.
-
I have no problems with seeing where I could put my men in cover on that W2 screenshot. Besides, this has nothing to do with the camera perspective. If at all then it relates to chessboard style maps, which JA2 has, but W2 not.
By the way, as JA2 uses a 2.3D engine where every scenery object has a 3D box collision model, just because your men can stand behind something, doesn't mean they are in full cover.
-
U-U-U-Unity?
-
U-U-U-Unity?
You make it sound like Unity is bad.. It will fit the bill for Wasteland no problem :P
-
Yeah Unity is a great engine for games on any platform PC,PS3,XBOX even phone! I have a Unity version of Counter-Strike 1.6 on my android.

Indeed, Unity is an EXCELLENT engine. Its the engine Im using to Dev all my new projects with. :P
Speaking of which we had finished developing a large chunk of the GUI and Placeholder structures recently and Unity is looking gewd. ( You will LOL when you see this in comparison to Wasteland 2 )

That looks like several gl commands, every single course in graphics will allow you make this from scratch. But I'm not doubting unity, I just find the name of this thing a bit funny.

Well, new sample music from Mark Morgan.
Hope you like it, write news on NMA forums (http://nma-fallout.com/forum/viewtopic.php?t=62515). Kickstarter. (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2/posts/324612) 8)

yep very good music , well but that eternity screenshot were also hot

JA2 screenshot: It's correct, I can instantly draw plans in my head how my mercs should proceed through that enviroment, because I have a perfect overview.
As I played the XCOM remake, at first I had problems with the 3D-camera, because I didn't really knew what is cover and what ain't - how are my agents facing the aliens - can they be flanked if I position them there?
IMO the new XCOM forces you to rotate the camera quite often and zoom in and out, but this takes us to the good and bad features of 3D. You have much more options to display the map/enviroment/action and those options take away the overview a bit (or a bit more), thus forcing you to look closer at the map and figure out which tactic is best. Same will go for W2 I guess.
