Title: Most efficient method of collecting junk?

Damn things keep spawning on the exit grid, is there a reasonable way to collect 1750 junk or is it just a 40 hour grind.

Do it with slave/merc.
1) Punch him to enter grid.
2) Use him as container.

But really doing it alone is damn boring, it's almost like leveling on crafting healing powders (btw now it's impossible? 0 xp?)

- Hunt for lumber and junk in the same encounters
- Make deals with newbies to outfit them with equipment for 80-100 junk.
- Don't go after insane base types?
- Look for junk when leveling / hunting for blueprints?

It took me something like three days to get the junk requirement for a depot. o_O Probably your best bet is to stockpile it when you don't need it.

It's ironic how we can get loads of iron ore, fruit and wood in a matter of seconds but junk is the most precious item in the wasteland.


There's should be 2 pieces of junk per thingy on the ground...

Use a max. carry weight alt. They can carry 86 junk. Load it full a few times a day till you have enough.
If you have the caps it's faster to simply buy it from other players.

There could be some player friendly changes to junk gathering, like a fixed amount of 8-10 per encounter and back to picking up 2 at a time.

Crafting weak healing powders gives 3 xp per powder. So it's not impossible, it just takes ages to collect flowers and make the powder. Especially since you can only make 1 at a time.

I'm curious does someone really selling junk in such huge quantities? Or there just are some newbies that are selling small amounts to get their first caps?

I haven't seen any, I mean i don't collect junk because it takes forever and is boring as shit I can't see anyone else wanting to do it since pretty much everything you could trade it for is easier to acquire yourself.

Final solution by greenthumb:

1.Create new TB, non-combat, max CW,max PE alt:

ST  PE  EN  CH  IN    AG  LK

10 10 1 2 6 10 1

Optional traits: Fast metabolism, Good natured
Tagged Skill:Sneak,Doc,Outdoorsman
*Skills except outdoorsman are not very important, so u can choose Lockpick,Unarmed... .

2. Get level 3.

U need to get 3 000Xp, its like to craft 3 000 ammo, use outdoorsman...
Put all your skill points to Outdoorsman to get 100%
Choose Bonus Move  (http://fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/Bonus_Move)Perk.

3.Establish Tent next to(in) location with city tile

U need 10 brahmins hides, this should be no trouble for you.
Choose location of city tile by urself, there is plenty of options, just see worldmap (http://fo2238.fodev.net/wiki/The_World).
NPCs in encounter (http://www.nitue.net/#fef/index) may be important to choose good city tile.

4. Last step is to start gathering Junk most effectively.

Just move next to your tent circle in city tile and reenter area as many times as you will need to fill your inventory. Stockpile it and repeat. Again and again.

Explanations:

Playing in at least 1024x768 is recommended to see all your sight range, obstacles do not prevent u to see items on floor, except its covered by texture of obstacles.

Max Strength is important to maximize your carry weight(CW).

Max Perception is important so maximize your sight range.

Playing in TB is important. With PE 10 u enter every hostile random encounter few hexes from exit grid, 10AP plus Bonus movement perk make you able to exit encounter in mostly 1 or 2 turns.

Good outdoorsman is an assumption to prevent most of random encounters while traveling on map, which reduce effecitivity of Junk gathering.

If this is not your first alt getting 3000Xp with non combat char or getting 10 hides should be no problem for you.

outdoorsman doesnt really help when you enter a location by yourself.
the window to choose if enter or not pops up AFTER you clinked to enter location :)

i'd take 6 end for strong back and I'd never do it in tb its way faster in rt.

advantage of my way is that u can do this fast, no need leveling or anything else just new alt,10hides and 3000xp. u can carry like 55 junks and u r operating next to tent so more CW is not very important. Hostile encounters in this way are not frequent, point is to make risk to die very low. RT is mouch more risky all time. For strong back u need 15 000 xp...

Hostile encounters? Encounters? Where I was gathering junk were no encounters at all. 100% empty encounters and yes, 100%, because I entered these damn location 100500 times and never ever had encounters, only once some guy appeared in my encounter. So there's no reason for TB.
Also take not only 10 ST, but also HH and tag unarmed, once, my CW alt was gathering wood, an evil PK in CA and laser pistol appeared on encounter, well.. he started to shoot me, I ran to him and almost killed: I was talking to him while knocking down saying that he's being beaten by 1st lvl CW alt, so probably this distraction could make me hit him less frequently, especially when my CW alt had 1 IN, and my speech was unreadable and I had to repeat phrases +I laughed so much from situation + speech that he managed to get up and run away from me and I continued cut wood.

at boneyard area i has npc's each 10-20 encounter

at reno area - was more junk and i v meet gang encounter 2 times while gathered 300-400 junk

how much junk per 1 encounter ?
reno have 8+ or 10+ per 1 with 1 luck
boneyard have less :(

Isn't it totally random? I had from 2 piles to something like 10, sometimes you can find 5 piles in one hex + a lot piles around, sometime just 2 piles on whole map.

Yes, good point RavenousRat. This is way i have not considered, if theres more such places, my guide is usless. But if i need gather 1750 junk in VC without transfer over long distance my way is still best one for me. My "guide" will work in any location on map.

Iam gathering near Abandoned mine at Gecko, i found min 1 and max 9 piles there, sometimes on exit grid, sometimes too many walls to search all over so better choice is reenter.

Just wanted to say, whether you are at New Reno, Gecko, or v15, it's the same random chance to get X amount of junk per encounter, in case that wasn't clear.

You can avoid encounters while entering the location by zooming in on global before doing it.

Having built various bases with a dedicated alts, i had very few encounters.
But even with junk in almost every encounters, it takes around ten minutes to get 50 junks.

Which leads to 6-7 hours to build a scrapheap. It almost as scary as to do TC ou look for blueprint...
(6-7 if you get junk in every encounters, don't get any hostiles, and never got tired. Which means probably more time)
