Basically as the title says.
I'm looking for suggestions and peoples personal preferences and user experience as I want to use what's most common amongst FOnline users to reduce compatibility issues.
Also what is the User Interface like in these programs? are they new user friendly or do you need a degree just to figure out how to use them?
Last and most important question; How do you set up channels in these programs?
-
I personally would suggest using IceChat (http://www.icechat.net/site/). It has a very user friendly interface and a step by step "installation" guide so you only have to define your preferred nickname, server and channel you'd like to autojoin. Ofcourse, some other IRC programs may have the same, but IceChat is almost idiot proof. :)

In IceChat you can easily set up in the options to autojoin channels, if you want to go into a new channel manually, type " /join channelname".

Thank you for such a wonderful program.

Mumble (http://mumble.sourceforge.net/) voice chat is my favorite. It is free, low latency, has no ads or popups, small install, and runs stably. Mumble runs in the background while i play a game, and puts a small indicator on my screen (adjustable) so i can see who is talking as they key the mic. You can whisper to private parties while others are speaking. You can add sub-channels and edit admin rights. Mumble is apparently very popular amongst FOnliners.
Ventrilo (http://www.ventrilo.com/) is another good one with strong features like Mumble. I've had good success with it too.
RaidCall? I know people use it, but i never tried it.
Skype? I consider this to be a highly effective spy program, worse than a virus. I will never again install it on my own computers. It remains however very popular and it has excellent video functionality in addition to voice.
For IRC text chat only, i use ChatZilla (https://addons.mozilla.org/en-US/firefox/addon/chatzilla/) but i do hate how it is advertised on by a group called "Hackers Are Us". Not so great there.

Thank you Marko, this is just the kind of information I'm looking for.

Opera for IRC.

"RaidCall? I know people use it, but i never tried it."
Is rly good and easy. You create a room with an ID number and only who have de ID can join. Very cool and stable.

Skype
just call the people you need in a combat
also you can make a conferince and call everyone at the same time+ they can leave/join when the call is active

Use Mumble or Skype when talking about voice programs (They're for a totally different thing though, Skype is like phoning people and Mumble is more like a voiced IRC). Mumble is incredibly superior to any other voice program right now.

Personally i use Forestnet since its easy to use and no download/account required to use it.
