Title: The anclav guy - revisited
Post by: Andr3aZ on February 28, 2012, 08:13:50 pm
Remember this piece of crap?

Well I did, and I wanted to try out how much progress I had made when I was reading and watching tons of drawing-tutorials for digital drawing in my last vacation.

He made a magic transformation and turned into this:

I finished the old drawing in 2010 shortly after starting to draw.

I had tried out many different techniques and learned and raged alot in those years. I'm very satisfied with this current new drawing, but yeah - it can always be better :)

Good Work!
What software are you using?
Did you do that with a graphictablet?
And can you recommend some tutorials?

Bit hazy but god damn it's good.

Are you going to other drawings of characters?

Thank you guys :)

Photoshop CS 5

Yes a tablet from Trust. They ain't that mega hardcore precise as the Bamboos from Wacom but it's good enough for beginners.

This guy has much good tutorials http://psd.tutsplus.com/author/martin-perhiniak/ . I also liked the technique of color-blocking. I kinda used that technique on this drawing.

Are you going to other drawings of characters?

As soon as the mood gets me again :) when I'm drawing I always need 100% mood for it or else I start something and never finish it (The Guardians can sing of song of that :) )

the animation is just a quick slideshow of every saved image I did when I took a pause on drawing. No skill in putting images together ;)

Still it shows the progress nicely :).
On a side note though I like the end version I gotta say even the one before the finished one in the gif looks real good and could have been the final one.
Really nice going there.

Thank you :)
I must admit, I got a bit lazy because I spent so many evenings on the picture and when I wanted to do the shoulder parts I screwed up some PS settings and couldn't figure out how to restore them which resulted in the shoulder part didn't turn out like I imagined and after 2 hours of painting over the shoulders I said "screw it, it's done" ;)

I did a more in-depth research on the PS settings now and I hope something like that doesn't happen again.

That looks good, Andr3aZ.
I like the smooth edges and shadows, did you draw the shadows first and lightened the edges? Did you use the blur brush as well?

Thank you, sorry for the late answer, i didn't see it until today when I wanted to recover the animated .gif .
I didnt use the blur brush at all - I have been using the technique called "color blocking". You draw the frame with basic colors and use the mixer brush to blend them together, then you add more color and blend them in again, repeat until it looks like you wanted it to look. Thats how I drawed the whole picture. Want shadow? Drop a bit of the same color in a darker tone and mix it. Want highlights? Same with lighter tone.

Cant wait to see it finished and detailed.

Sorry, for me it's finished as it is. As I already said I've spend enough time on this drawing and for me it was a huge personal step forward in digital painting.
