I am wondering how it is calculated, cause I would like to understand why does some huge encounters (meaning several kinds of critters) give so low XP and some small encounters so many XP.
-
XP gained is per square: it is harder to avoid encounters in harsh areas, but it gives more xp. More outdoors means also less XP gained.
-
And the exact formula noone knows :P
-
Is it really important to know the exact formula for this exp gain?
I have noticed:
- there is a minimum of 5 exp for an enco detection
- there is a maximum of 100 exp for an enco detection (or was it 150? ; anyway, they're at the edge of the map east of themepark, 41:12-41:4)
Also, after 150 outdoorsman, i don't notice any reduced effects for enco exp. Meaning you get 80 exp for a certain enco at 150 outdoorsman and also 80 exp for that same enco at 200 outdoorsman.
But maybe this is only the harder enco's.

As far as i know you gain 5-95 exp per detection. And about outdoorsman it affects the chance to detect an encounter to 100 odm then it just boost travel speed
-
if you have less than 100 outdoorsman skill the xp formula is: 100 + sector harsh lvl(min5 max75) - your outdoesman skill
if you have more than 100 outdorsman skil the exp formula is: sector harsh lvl(min5 max75)
and exp gain is not dependend on critter harshness ^^ you can get 75exp by avoiding molerats in some sectors

I had exactly 100 odm and gained 5-95 exp per detection ;)

You can have almost 200 xp on a character with very low outdoorsman. (you rarelly gain xp from avoiding encounters with this kind of char)

grinding Encounter outdoors XP is very good way to level any alt fast and quick, while not concentrating on the game much at all.... You just raise outdoors to 100, then move over world map, blue suit... I do runs from under Den, all the way down to mariposa.. the XP from those encounters is around the high end mark.. while you are doing this, you can do other more important things other then playing game.. you don't loose any items, you dont have any real risk.. yet after a couple of hours of doing it right... you get plenty of XP. 2 hours of this should get you from level 1 to 7-8ish..
