I am lvl'ing a full-blown crippler atm, but I am wondering how much small guns skill is needed. I have heard anything from 180-250. But i don't know how range modifiers are calculated, and how much is needed to get 95% as maximum hex. Also it could be nice to have some points left to put into other skills.

Depends on many factors: range, weapon used, perception, perks, enemy AC...

My build is much like this one:

However i have finesse instead of chem res.
I'm planning on using either a sniper rifle or the .223 pistol when i reach a higher level.

To be honest, I wouldn't use SG for a crippler build but EW instead. go with the laser pistol. It has a nice range and low str req.
-
It goes like this:
(PE-2) x 8 [pistols] or (PE-2) x 16 [riffles] or (PE-2) x 20 [scoped hunting riffle] + SG skill - (range+1)x4 - target's AC - aiming mod [-30 for eyes] = your chance to hit
-
Actually it's *16 not for rifles but for guns with long range perk, *8 for all others except scoped. And target AC is reduced by ammo and it's -60 for eyes, -30 is for arms.

Right... Been playing too much with pugilists lately
- 30 to hit eyes is for HtH fighters

Hmm, I think EW are a little too pricy for me atm, I kinda like shooting molerats with BB for leveling.
Also I'm aiming for the eyes constantly as they give a higher crit. chance than eg. an arm, right?
Thx for the formula Wallace, though I just discovered that hit/crit chance can also be calculated in the character planner, which my brain can handle a little better. Can it really be true that 201% SG is enough to get 95% hit AND crit chance at 50 hexes? That number sounds a little low to me.

I remember thet in previous era you needed like 237 skill (tier 3 armors had 30-35 AC) so basically with more than 200, with all crit perks and finesse, shooting at someone who is standing...
Yes you can do that
But there's is (or will be) a way to have 220 AC (some builds)
-
Thx for the replies. I think I will leave SG at a little over 200, so I can buff some of the other skills, as I don't do that much PVP other than defending myself against PK'ers.

Better ask yourself for what you need that kind of sniper?
Because as far as i can see with 10 pe and sharpshooter and 249% of skill you trying to hunt for other players with your sniper rifle:D.
-
You're right :)
However the build i linked too, is not mine, just quite similar.

first, unless it's a sniper vs sniper battle, don't worry with max range, BG's will run to you, so you can count at max for a good bg build I think at 90 AC, so it's nice, and for your build, I would get even tougher instead of lifegiver at level 24, because some damage res and threshold is nice.
