How do you use a lock on a door/locker/chest?

I never really had to use one, but I need to use one now!  :-\

I was never able to lock a door, but containers/lockers are simple.

Open it, and leave the door open. Click and select the backpack from the menu, and select the lock in your inventory to "use on". A key will be added to your inventory and the locker will be locked.
