Ok so I'm in an encounter with a fire gecko and an alien (that's all that's left). And the fire gecko hit me & the alien with flame breath, then the alien hits the gecko. So ok it's my turn... nope gecko hits me again with flame breath killing me. I double checked the chat log to see if I lost a turn or got knocked out but it wasn't even a critical hit. Just damage.

Gecko decided to use flame breath twice.

So when you say "that's all that's left", you mean that you dropped into an existing encounter? Or did you create the encounter?

I bet it was existing one

Sorry I'll give more detail.
I started the encounter. TB. Can't remember the numbers exactly but it was all going smooth. I think my turn was last (fire gecko, alien, me) and I had gotten at least one kill. When the fire gecko's flame hit me that was the first time I was hit. Then the alien hit the gecko, and I expected my turn to be next but instead the fire gecko went again.

probably the secuence/ party changed at the death of a fire gecko or alien, so at the end of the turn, you started, then the gecho and then the alien, and at the start of the next round, the gecko party had the best secuence/nr than the others and started first
in Sonny, if you use speed altering spells and your speed is increased(initialy been lower than the adversaries), you gain an other turn(the enemy buffs/debuffs remain the same) but at the end of the speed buff the enemy "gains" 2 turns
btw, i thik hunting in real time is better, since the human run animation is faster than animal run animation, so you can outrun them and rest to charge APs(this is how i hunt(ed) brahmins) longer, but safer
