Title: Any role players left here?
Post by: zerochance on November 19, 2011, 09:13:04 am
Just found this game, haven't even had a moment to sit down and play.  Been stuck at work where I can spend hours reading posts and going over the Wiki but don't dare install game software.  Stupid stunt like that cost me my last job.    Anyway, the wiki said there had been a role playing community around the Hub but that was nearly two years ago.  All the posts I've read have been about tweaking builds for PvP so I'm wondering, did the griefers manage to kill off all of the Role-players?  I prefer my player to player interactions be a bit more than just swapping lead.

Roleplayers are still around. It's harder to find them since there's no project going on with stability. If you learn to use IRC chat, join the #2238rp channel, were some roleplayers meet up.

Otherwise, just wander around. Get some outdoorsman skill, a car, or lot of patience, do not stuck just in one town: visit the bars, the pubs, the taverns. You might be lucky and find some.

Most of the roleplaying that's left is roleplaying assholes.

No offense to anybody out there. But its doubtful. There's far to many douchebags out there that enjoy ruining peoples RPing experience so don't get your hopes up. It would be really nice if we had like Alt servers for RP and PVP but hey the games still tons of fun! play it!

My Friend, brother and I, sometimes we'll roleplay as the US Army (chuckles) when we're fighting Unity, Khans, or VC Patrols..

There are roleplayers, but you need to find them.
I suggest to search Klamath, because there you meet very different players (PKs, Roleplayers, Assholes..)

Maybe try Redding (when under Childrens of Atom or Sarmatiens control) or Broken Hills (when under Broken Hill Hunters control). Those factions are known to allow roleplay in there towns, altho its far from mandatory.

You can see some role players at NCR too sadly lot of people try to harass them but luckily they don't give it up easy. However I have to say Redding and Broken Hills are good places for RP. Also it can be good to go around the cities and stop by them from time to time most of them are empty though.

The "problem" about this is that not all players think the same when they talk about roleplay.

Very few players actually understand roleplay as thinking about a background for your character and act in-character all the time. For some, roleplaying means making up some vague story to put behind a faction name they're using to pwn enemies. For some others, it's simply standing around in a town, talking nicely to people instead of shooting them.

But even if players don't do serious roleplay, some of these pseudo-RP activities can be fun. For example I have recently met a guy who'd set up a kind of rudimentary casino in a guarded town: he dropped caps on the ground, say 20 bottle caps in 20 different hexes, but there was a 21st hex with 3 caps on it. If you payed the dude 100 caps, you could try your luck picking up one of the bottle cap bags from the ground. If you found the one with 3 caps, you got the first prize: 2000 caps. If not, you could try a second time and if you find the 3 caps, you got a prize of 1000 caps. If you failed both shots, you obviously lost.

Very simple and not connected to roleplay at all. But it's always refreshing to see this kind of stuff. Of course, from time to time a troll would come and start picking up the caps to make it impossible to play the game.  ::)

I love those games! Lots of different variations with different items is always fun :)

This game has some limiting mechanics but with a little imagination there are some pretty neat activities you can create with the stuff you already have.

Sadly true.

Sadly true.

It's sad only for the true, hardcore roleplayers. But we must remember that

1) 2238 is not officially a roleplay server (unlike, for example, Wasteland 2155), and

2) our players come from different "backgrounds" and we can't expect everyone to understand RP the same way

Hardcore roleplayers have no real reason to expect everyone to do any true roleplay and in all this context we should be glad there are some people who prefer talking nicely instead of shooting you for the lolness. When I find somebody playing that way I try to enjoy it as much as I can. If there is actually someone truly roleplaying in the "group", things can get more interesting, but an legion of hardcore roleplayers is not needed: I think that only a few of them in a group can encourage others to make a better effort. Except this time when I was in a randomly formed group in which I was roleplaying a dedicated scavenger, another dude was roleplaying a mercenary, and the third guy was a quite clueless guy who kept asking why we were talking "that way", what we were talking about, etc.

But the worst case is imho when it's a group of fighters who roleplay by shouting some slogan on their enemy's corpse, because this group are looking for PvP (and in the ideal case, TC) which pretty much makes it impossible to carry out a different activity.
