I am buying cars alone without any equipment just money and i have never died in gas station while buying a car. :)

Join the slavers you can get usefull fighters by enslaving poor fellows also they can do forced labour at mines. Then later when you have lot of caps start buying mercs but don't just use them get them to level some till they reach a decent hp.

I've died buying a car at New Reno.  First time I tried some dude jumped me from behind and took all my stuff.
It happens.... and being paranoid is the safest way to exist in fonline.
