I was told a couple of things about locks but there is still much I don't know.
I have been lead to believe that locks could only work on open lockers, footlockers, wallbanks, etc... but whenever I try it says that does nothing.
Advice?

Yes, a normal lockpad should work when you "use" it on one of those containers. If not it's a bug, because it works for ALL of those containers. Even in towns.

Ok just for double checking/clarification: We're at my friends' base (gas station) using a lock (nothing else do we need something else?) on the lockers in the upper right tent. Does this change anything?

Well... If I'm right I think you need to open it THEN use the lock on it.
But other then that no, it should work fine.

yea we tried that. but still nothing happens :S

I never used one, but i think that you use it on a locker of yours, and if you try to open asks key. Key should be added by using the lock on the container.

Locker must already be open, as others said.
Click and hold on open locker, bring up menu, scroll down to backpack to open up your inventory.
Click on lock.
Don't put the key inside.

Just out of curiosity; if a padlocked container is lockpicked open, will the key still close the lock or does the lock get "destroyed"?
