As far as I can tell this hasn't been suggested yet;
unloading 10+ rounds in a single burst is something people with automatic guns seldom do as it causes serious aiming issues (unless they are mounted) and even in this game one needs to get very close to make such a burst worthwhile.
My suggesting is to implement a second bursting mode called "controlled burst" (or quick/short or any other synonym, that doesn't matter) which would fire between 3 - 5 rounds. I'm not sure what this would mean in AP, probably nothing as there is only a 1 point difference between a single shot and a burst any way. However maybe this would mean a 2 point increase for a full burst (from a single shot base) and a 1 point increase for a controlled burst.
But what it would mean is a higher accuracy rate at longer distances for bursters and less ammo consumption when a 10+ bullet burst is not necessary or useful.
I'm not sure if this should be implemented for big guns as well as small guns but its all up for discussion now anyway.
thoughts?

Not a bad idea... I know plenty of incidents where I find myself debate the merits of overkill versus no underkill and this would be very helpful. Of course, people will bitch when they see the AP cost is up...

Yea, the AP thing was an after thought and I'm not particularly attached to it. However with the amount of damage a point blank burst can do, one more AP might not be such a bad thing...

On longer distances you hit only 2-3 rounds anyway. So you won't get any more damage than now. About the ammo consumption - you need 10 bullets to hit with 3, if you shoot three forget about hitting anything. Well skilled character will hit more bullets even with 12 bullets burst.

I only think that certain weapons would have this like maybe certain variants of the assualt rifle, maybe fn fal? If all machine guns would happen to have that ability what would be the purpose of having a fully automatic weapon then?

It makes the current burst mode redundant in anything other than pve or one hex. It also means that every burst weapon may need rebalancing.
Iirc bursting doesnt reduce your accuracy it just reduces the range.
Id rather just use the 3round theme to differentiate one weapon from another, the xle from the ar for instance.

But a shorter burst will increase accuracy over long distance so your ratio/logic really don't apply anyway. Statistically speaking if 3 out of 12 bullets in a burst hit their mark, it will be the first 3... So why keep firing?

sure, makes sense

bursters already try to get as close as possible to maximize there damage and hit ratio. Further more if the 'cover' suggestion gets implemented it would more than validate this imo. Also I fail to see how this would make the burster build less relevant as it only makes him more adaptable. Remember the idea here is create a viable long range attack for bursters in the scenario that they should need it.
IRL continuos bursting destabilizes the person firing the gun as he has to deal with the last rounds recoil while aiming the next, every shooter simulates lowered accuracy with a widening crosshair the longer you burst. So yes it effects accuracy versus range. A 3 round burst would still not have as much accuracy over as much range as a single shot but it would be way more accurate than 12 round burst.

Number of bullets shot in bursts is tied to the "burst" option in the engine - said option being one of the maximum 5 you can give a weapon/object. Single Shot and Reload take away 2 slots aswell, so you are left with 2 additional slots which may even be used for better things in the future. I don't see how one, maybe 2 more options to burst can balled "controlled", unless you want some engine hackery.

I'm not sure I understand. So a weapon is limited to 5 ways in which you can use it, for most small guns these include;
reload
single shot
single aimed shot
burst
so there is only 1 slot left, but in order to create a "controlled burst" option to fill that slot you would need to hack the engine in order tie a different number of rounds to the new burst option?
and there are possibly better things that may fill that last slot in the future, such as?

No, with high enough skill you are either at one hex or youre not. As close as possible makes no odds if you have high enough tohit.
Who said anything about builds? I said it obsoletes the current burst fire mode as there would be no reason to ever fire a ten round burst unless you are either at one hex or shooting at a crowd of raiders.

Yeah i wanna shot full magazine from m60 in one burst :D

This suggestion makes sense. It's just like in real life, where you can shot either:
1. a single bullet
2. a full burst
3. a few short bursts, in order to hit the target with maximum efficiency and save some ammo.
If it takes the last one available slot of the weapon, it would be the best decision to use it for that kind of shooting tactic.

Hey! positive feedback!
so would it be a pain in the ass to implement in your opinion?

Rotfl yey for absurdal bursts xD 120 ammo from avenger or 100 fro m60 (i think it will be most powerfull burst evah ) its pretty erm realistic but gamekilling xD
-
Imo its a useless feature that isnt worth making.
Also, youre mixing real life mechanics with ingame mechanics. They differ a lot and Im pretty sure you have no idea how bursts in F:2238 work.

I think I've already said that reload taking 2 AP while single shot taking 4 to 7 barelly makes any sense :d.
Yet it's totally fine and nobody has compained up to date.
If developers felt that bursting takes way too much ammo, they could've decrease it for normal burst mode and compansate it by rebalancing all other.

did you even read the suggestion or is this a joke?

enlighten me

I don't think that there is anything wrong with the normal bursting mode, I'm talking about an added option, then it's up to the player to decide which one to use at what time.
