I'm sure that this topic has been brought up before, but i was curious to know if it was going to ever be implemented such as that of fallout tactics (mutants,dogs,bots,ghouls,humans,etc...) Seeing as how GM's change skins for others i don't see why this feature couldn't be implemented even if its only an "appearance" difference. As of right now all you can do is play chicks instead of dudes which is rather boring.
-
It's not "just look", most of skins remove ability to use many weapons (due to lack of animations), wearing armor and in few cases reduce general character speed. Until you have/know where to find missing animation sets, this suggestion have chances to be included close to zero.
<put "wait-for-3d" sentence here>

cool this was much more informative than our IRC discussion to which you said you knew nothing about it ;p.

[12.07.11 21:33] < duder__> wipe what's up with those mutant skins?
[12.07.11 21:34] < Wipe> i know nothing about skins
I tho you ask about skins currently given to players, and in this case answer is still valid :)

lol gms aren't there to give out skins like candy anyway, typical population's response to seeing a gm is "gimme xx skin!!". those who do get them and are unlucky/lucky enough to keep it have to deal with their drawbacks, most likely the inability to wear armor, restricted use of weaponry (in one or two cases, maybe more no weapons possible at all).
-
If you wear armor, there is no drawbacks from having a skin. Example - model of afrowastelander in metal armor can't run, but while wearing a jacket, it changes to regular jacket guy and can run and use every weapon.
I still missing leather jacket skin as my default. Good ol' trollfest days in Modoc ...

Lack of animation is a false problem.
These char could have advantages that counter these.
(or, for rats or ants, just be taken for RP purpose)

People saying that always made me laugh, as you just have to go to the closest barber to get a normal skin if the drawback are too annoying. Never understood what the fuck was the probem to do a NPC giving all humans skins, even if it can't use everything, as you can just switch back if ya want.

well im under the impression the barber thing wont work with a female character so yeah i guess i did overlook that point.

This is a GREAT idea! i would like to see more then just appearance(skin) as only difference between races aswell. The different races should get different special bonuses/weakness too! For example, mutant race could have a bonus to STR, but a penalty on INT, and can only use BG or EW. Humans of course jack of all trades, neutral special, and use all weapons. Ghouls could get a bonus to luck or PE, and only use small guns. I would love to see races implemented, would be great, add allot of variety/replay value to the game, and just make things more interesting in general.
-
Races based on Tactics ones should be implented long time ago. Lack of animations for all guns is the worst excuse ever and should be forgotten already.
-
Its not so much that, its that they can't run.
When 3d rolls around then we can have races and different specials etc.

Why does it matter that they can't run? Just warn a player before he chooses to play as ghoul: you can't run, you can't use specific weapons, blah, blah. People can make choices themselves and take the consequences.

what you will see is people then going on to suggest something to make them move faster as a sort of run. you can see it now, suggestion subject: faster ghoul movement
"blah blah, it moves too slow i want to rp on that character but not be limited by it blah blah. one or two ways it might be possible or no real suggestion at all (i want this done but haven't thought of a way) e.g. as topic says (my work here is done i hope devs/players like it attitude)."
<insert positive/negative feedback>
etc.

I once seen a 2x speed ghoul and it was quite irritating the animation looked strange that way I'm sure that quite a lot of player would do what Reginmund said go around asking to make the movement faster. 3D will solve a lot of thing it would even make running possible for ghouls and mutants man they could even get to use more weapons. I always found it strange that muties can't use knives and clubs and ghouls (normal ones) can't use smgs and pistols.

I agree, It's just a downside of playing another race. Since the race is a choice, and players would be warned before they choose it, i think it would be ok. I would gladly play a mutant or ghoul and not be able to run/use all the guns. I would use a high PE/long range weapon to try and make up for this.
Should mutants or ghouls(especially ghouls!) be able to move as fast as humans anyway? A ghoul running would just be silly!
P.S. SOLAR, if you ever need a tester to play a mutant or ghoul, use me!

No, you're silly - have it implemented and next thing devs can expect is "zomg give some better stats and things, becuz we can't do this, this and this"
"Zomg nerf encounters, we cannot run"
"zomg nerf thieves, we cannot run"
...

I agree, even if you warn players, especially ones new to the game and want to go with the ghoul/mutie gimmick i suspect most will just ignore the downsides at first only to realise the drawbacks. Also such warning to player is not going to be an essay about the reasons why playing with such a skin is a bad idea because they will less likely read it so you cant quite explain that not running will hurt in rt encounters, vs thieves, suicide bursters etc.
-
So you are saying this is a bad idea, because noobs may not read the warnings, and will cry? lol now thats just silly...
Noobs allready cry about everything possible, like when I cut them in half with my laser rifle, wasteland to harsh, blah blah. It's outrageous to not add new things to the game because noobs will cry. Lets just do everything to please noobs and make it easy on them ::) yeahhhhhh
-
Indeed, Fallout has always been a game about decisions. If the noob is too lame to decide if becoming a Super mutant/ghoul is really worth it with all the drawbacks (of which you were warned) then I'm afraid this noob is too lame to play this game anyway. Some people say "Fallout 2 wasn't even near as harsh as in here" they were wrong because of multiple facts:
* You aren't the only chosen one that seeks power, money and wants to save his village by killing other wastelanders in FOnline.
* In Fallout 2 the enemy locations were put according the way you move - you start out at Arroyo, you go to Modoc, then to Den, then to Redding, New Reno blah, blah, blah. If you went straight from Arroyo to Enclave base (or any other random location) you would get raped. In FOnline you start out at a random location, you move to another random location and get raped. See the non-existing difference?
I understand being a dev isn't easy, but there is one fact - if a noob (not a newb, but noob) is playing the game and actually "ignoring" other players and just whining then there is nothing to do with them. If the noob doesn't understand what's his problem and starts respecting other members trying to help him out he is not needed neither for the full game neither for a beta test.

Until 3d there will be no playing as the different "species". To continue arguing the pros and cons would just be a waste of time.
