Title: Predictable Gun Strength Requirements
Post by: Badger on April 10, 2011, 03:15:30 pm
Weapon strength requirements are a little bit unpredictable. For example, 6 Strength to fire a Tommy Gun, but only 4 Strength to fire a Sawnoff Shotgun. I'm not interested in the real life implications of firing these guns, but I am interested in consistency.

I vote we change to a very predictable system that directly corresponds to weapon type. I realise most weapons ingame don't have this problem, but there are a few weird anomalies that could do with being smoothed out.

3 ST - Conventional Pistols/Energy Pistols
4 ST - SMGs. (Including the Tommy and G11)
5 ST - Assault Rifles/Shotguns/Single Shot Rifles (Why do Pancors and Combat Shotguns require less strength than a CAWS, a basically identical weapon? WHO KNOWS.)
6 ST - Two-handed Energy Weapons (Although I will admit I don't get why weapons that shouldn't have recoil are hard to fire. Heavy internal components, I guess.)
7 ST - Big Guns

Thoughts?

As a side note, my wiki searching reminded me of the Alien Blaster/Phaser. One day I hope for the Alien Blaster and the Phaser to be introduced, renamed/redescribed and given sane requirements. Another laser pistol (the phaser) would be great, as would a low end plasma weapon (The Alien Blaster).

meh

would it improve gameplay? no

would it make it worse? no

meh... another neutral idea

Most weapons already follow this, but I agree that the Tommy Gun and those other odd weapons should also follow it, just so that everything would be the same.

LSW should stick to it's 6 str since it only fires 10 bullets per burst, whereas miniguns fire 30-40.

Other than that, I agree with the "smoothing out" as has been proposed.

But i hope you know that other SMGs are one handed weapons (oh looks like G11 is two handed too, but no matter) and Tommy Gun is two handed weapon.
So there is difference.

Tommy Gun is equivalent to an Assault Rifle-type weapon, and therefore should have 5 Strength, according to this. 6 Strength is unnecessary.

pancor has note in its description, that its design makes it easy to control, so i think its fair in shotgun case. We try to stick close to f2, f1 do we? :>

The CAWS, short for Close Assault Weapons System, shotgun is a useful tool for close-range combat. The bullpup layout gives the weapon a short, easily handleable, length while still retaining enough barrel length for its high velocity shells.

Not a huge correlation, either.

On that note, it would be quite nice if the few strange weapon animations are made to correlate with the number of hands they use. I appreciate the G11 looks more like an SMG than a rifle, but the game treats it as a two handed weapon it should use rifle animations.

Same with the sawnoff shotgun - if it's fired one handed, it should use pistol animations. I have no idea how many people even know the sawnoff counts as a one hander.
