Why are cars stealable without the key? Thats a friggin joke.
Its called lockpick not Hotwire.
Seriously.....I want my focking highwayman back.
So the guy who stole it, can now just use his finger to start the car? LOL
Ox.
EDIT: Sure, buy a car, travel around in style, but dont EVER take it to a town, How fucking boring.
-

You have a point...
But take a look at the buggy, it never stops!
-
Investing in lock pick better give some tradeoffs. Too bad lockpicker is just another alt.
-
so for some expensive lulz to combat the magic fingers of locksmith car stealers, would it be viable to stuff the trunk full of explosives and set the timer before rolling into town such that said car thief drives off to his/her tent/base only to explode in the process?
or if timed too quickly take out those would-be theives in town whilst in the process obliterating the car 8)

The car-owner loses 40k and lockpicker just dies and respawns without any cost.

at the very least a bruised ego if that is the thief's very first stolen car but i didnt mean to be taken seriously on this.
-
The theif should have to steal the key, to drive the car, THAT is a viable option.
How about putting these thieves to the test.
1.Enter sneak mode and remain undetected. (Good luck with all those guards watching ur grubby little hands)
2.Successfully steal the key.
3.Drive off in car.
Only trunk should/can be lockpicked.
I highly doubt any of these thieves hav a High repair or science, which would be needed if hotwiring was possible.
Edit:This would make thieves actually pick their targets, instead of just wazlting up, and how's your mum?

Serious or not, having a car stolen and then detonating it, taking out the criminal would be totally a badass thing to do. Too bad with current game settings the joke would be on the car owner since life has no value in Fonline.

Devs love wasteland is harsh. Primary playerbase of Fonline loves wasteland is harsh. Result?
More wastelabnd is harsh.
Its funny even the wasteland is harsh folks are bitching whether it be tc glitch or insta kill mercs.
Continue adding moar wasteland is harsh and watch this game turn into a flaming pile of garbage.

thats pretty much the best sum up i have read on over here ;D

I like more Wasteland is Harsh.
Cars in FOnline are pieces of scrap thrown together by T-Ray at his garage. He gives you a key to open the car doors, but the ignition doesn't have a key, it's just a knob or something. Look at it like that, and go buy another highwayman.
And regarding being able to blow up cars.... well yes, that was a joke. But it would be great if cars could be damaged. Give 'em 5000 HP, and make it separate than deterioration, and make the HP not repairable.
Stray bursts around your car? Better be careful...
-
Highwaymans by looks and in Fallout lore are salvaged old technology. Everything works the same besides certain parts needing replacement IE fuel cell controller or regulator. The knobs suggestion is a convenient excuse to ignore realism and justify "moar wasteland is harsh".
Again realism here is pick and choose and most often only used when to justify "more wasteland is harsh" which is incredibly one sided.
What would make more sense is to lower the availability of cars to truly improvised cars and balance travel between roads/wilds. Outdoorsman would be a huge boon to folks who prefer to travel through mountains and other tough terrains yet roads offer speed/yet more dangers and won't necessarily take you everywhere (the whole bombed out bridges/huge craters/and collapsed buildings, etc).
-
Wasteland is Harsh is the only thing than makes fonline really original and one.
make this game more "estandar" will destroy it
-
Who enters city with a car anyway?
-
Hmm. I met once a guy on encounter. Did not shoot him and even healed. He told me he got 2 cars in VC one by one.
1 highwayman lockpicked and 1 scout stolen with a key.
Descent luck must I say. I dont see cars in town often. However I drive in for some quick pick ups

Id just made a 20k deal at VC with a player, and this guy turns up and bolts straight too the car. :(

Sure does suck that 'wasteland is harsh' AKA Cheaper the lulz the less we care how it effects you. I mean is this an MMO? I thought it was, some Devs and GM's said it was supposed to be, so far it just seems to be just a game of who can 'hide' the most stuff away from everyone else and never show it.
I don't like the car stealing mechanic as it is, I agree there should be more to it than just lockpick the door. And the skill should at least be higher. As far as 'realism' which there is truly little to none, if you have a car, and you bring it in to a town, you're gonna not only have it rigged in a way that only you know how to start it, but also probably rigged that if anyone tries to mess with it, people for 10 miles in every direction will think it's 2077 again. In a world where parts to things can be put together into something like a radio all the way to a complex laser rifle you can't rig a number lock control panel on a car?
-
Sure, buy a car, travel around in style, but dont EVER take it to a town,
Sure, why should I?
I've made parking tents around every civilised town - Hub, SF, VC. Bases near NCR, Redding etc. also allow me to leave car there safely. And yeah, entering city with car happens just to pick up few people and leave immediately.
It's not game's fault you have lack of imagination, my dear.
C'mon, Highwayman costs around 40k now, and it's the most expensive car. Here, prices from 13.12.2010:

The whole concept of lockpicking and stealing should be reworked, because you can level up your thief char only by killing centaurs by rocketlauncher and you reach lvl 21 without any atempt to lockping/steal something. Then you are focused on player targets possestion, not NPCs. There is not any evolution similar to PvP chars (quest, scorpions, molerats, centaurs floaters...).
BUT
There is a lot of others thing to redone and resources (devs. time) are limited. The current game mechanism offers another solutions how to avoid situations like you described. Very easy is to create ad hoc tent every time you need to visit city. I know, i know.. so many hides.. But, come on. You can always hunt a large groups of brahmins and you can always, buy them from klamath or in NCR bazaar. So only real problem is that wasteland is harsh warning is not written near your car ignitionm mechanism.
Anyway, i already posted advice how to prevent this kind of situation. But because of my "decreditable" status on this forum, my http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=10944.0 (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=10944.0) should not stay on top where everyone new can see them, because there are more "important" and sticked advices like how to enslave npcs.. ehm. Thats strange aproach. If you want to warn someone, to give them help how to prevent any unpleasant situation, you can not effectively do it. But if someone wants to start roleplay of slaver, he has already sticked thread even he can google this forum history and find adequate advices.

You evil dual logger!
-
Yup all about hide everything you have, that works out great in a game where the creators really want to have communities forming. But hey if it ain't broke don't fix it right? Btw the car prices will be a bit higher now, some were just purchased.
-
It's not game's fault you have lack of imagination, my dear.
I too hav tents near major citys like redding ncr and the hub shared with trusted friends.
Forgive my lack of imagination, for not having one near VC.

I know that this will not help you, but i will tell you how we lost hummer. We traveled across wasteland with 3 players. I was leader and i had key in my inventory. From some funny reason, we gave leadership to each other until someone did mistake and he kicked me from that group. But because i had a key in my inventory, others were unable to jump with car from worldmap to wasteland and car was lost.
Funny thing was, that i went to closest location, to Hinkley, where spawn PK killed me and he toke my car key. I hope he is still searching for that car in the wasteland with my key in his hand :P
-
I think everyone here knows that they can make parking tents as long as they have a shitload of alts or trusted buddies.
I thought the devs wanted to dis-courage alting? I thought devs want to dis-courage dual logging for just these situations.
The fact that folks have to resort to these tupid half-baked schemes and possibly risk a ban to create "parking lots", shows just how fugged up the whole situation is.

Ox.
To be at least somewhat successful as a thief you need roughly 220 steal minimum.
From what I have been told for sneak you need at least 250 minimum.
And you want to add repair or science too to that mix?
I highly doubt that's possible even with 10 IN, skilled trait and educated perks.
The knobs suggestion is a convenient excuse to ignore realism and justify "moar wasteland is harsh".
Realism as in MFC and SEC to fuel a car?
Not to mention, BA, CA, plasma rifle, laser rifle, respawns, stims, ...
Booze or alcohol would be more realistic to fuel a car.
-
cars are electric in the future maybe? they are just retro 50's styled.
also thinking of these two things.. 1.21 jigawatts

With the stats, traits and perks u suggested, i got this,
i managed 204 sneak, 212 lockpick and 204 repair.
Like i said, it will make them pick/follow their targets, (like a real thief).
I think it would be cooler to be robbed/mugged in some alleyway, than in plain view.
Lets make hotwire require at least 150 repair.

How is it that u are comparing game mechanics to game content. ????

Thief does not need sneak at all. It's a stupid suggestion.
Thief plays on your weakness and lack of attention. Like in real. Do we have ninja thiefs? I doubt.
I don't know why you whining here that very specialized character stole your car.
As that guy told me, he had 300 steal and 235 lockpick (+50 exp. lockpicks)
So it is very very reasonable he can steal and he can lockpick. If lockpick will not help with carjacking, it will be another useless skill.

Wasteland is Harsh is the only thing than makes fonline really original and one.

It's not equally harsh. It gets easier the more stuff you have.
Besides cars being stealable just like that has nothing to do with harshness anyway. It's just a silly feature.

Well when robbing someone, ther'ye not ment to know there being robbed. ummm (sneak)
Sneak doesnt only refer to leaping bluesuit ninja thiefs, hiding in the corner of the Raw Hide Saloon ceiling.

Sorry to bring my silly idea back up but:
http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=12155.0 (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=12155.0)
if this happened killing somebody who stole your car and dies while in WM then that would be pretty damn annoying. that is of course if it doesn't get fixed anytime soon.
-
Hertog, hate to break it to ya, but in the realism of the 'game' all the stuff you listed is in fact real, they even make mention how the rise of MFC and SEC was too late to stop the energy crisis and the damage it caused to the worlds political issues. Thus the small fireworks display in 2077. I still think there should be more to stealing the car than just (heh heh, hey yall I just picked the lock a hyuck.) I mean they run on small fusion batteries, you can't lock the door with an electronic lock, or key card???
