SG and BG mercs are fairly useless because of how short lived they are, leather jackets aren't enough to survive the wastes.
-
I am agree wit dis

Totally agree, an LJ is insta killable by most meidium-powered encounters, MUCH more by players.
Although if your a leader build using entire pvp squads, its good to have some melee metal mercs, then LJ mercs for support.
But that only works with SG mercs, I never use BG cus of their armor and how stupid they are concerning Friendly Fire.

I would prefer something like low tier=leather jacket, then leather armor, metal armor and finally tesla or combat armor, (i don't see any point in a melee merc for example being unable to run so why have a metal armor black guy as the top tier?)

back when he was 500 caps for under 3 k you can have a squad that will farm jt scouts all day

i want to make all mercs have COMBAT ARMOR! but, price higher.
it's looks nice! 5 guys with CA and SS and killing some crits. :D

I fairly agree with this. Mercs can level up, have about 100 hp and LA/MA armor it all depends on the price. Only way I see the mercs to have MAs is to start from lower hp so it wont be like a mutant with 300 hp or something.
Now if you consider slaves, Id say they would need some better armor, ghouls should have more than 100 hp because they're slow, regulators should be enslavable (with some hp boost as well)
-
yeah mercs can level up, but they dont survive long enough to get more than 2-3 usually because then you really have to grind with them, and spending hours to get an extra 40 hp isn't worth it when they can die at any moment regardless.

Well if you pay the fair price I bet it can happen your merc has bigger firepower than you. It depends what mercs are you talking of. The cheapest merc with hammer will die against a caravan or unity. Now, the best merc has 100 hp, MA and energy skill (laser rifle) or mutant with rocket launcher over 300hp.
There could be MA 100hp merc with a sniper rifle... but only this... BG with MA would be too good

MA with Bg would be good but not amazing. There still is the issue of friendly fire.

As an experiment i bought 5 jacket melee mercs and went from ncr to VC in rt, running out of every encounter asap. 1 survived to reach vc.

Just make all mercs to use player's skin, male or female and then allow them equip armor you give them, so if you have 5 BAs laying somewhere and you don't know what to do, give it to merc, and he'll automatically equip best armor in his inventory, the same, as weapon. Simple change skin and set DR and DT, because everyone knows that NPCs can't wear armors really. Dialogue option will have "Unequip armor", so he'll have it's default armor. Default armor can't be looted and seen in inventory, and it'll be leather jacket, as the worst armor, because merc-bluesuiter... well... looks a bit strange. This way you may equip your merc with weapon and armor, but it requires alot work as script, that will allow to merc recognize the most expensive armor in his inventory, then this armor will disappear, then merc's skin will be changed according to armor, his DR and DT will be set according to armor. And of couse it won't deteriorate, because it's impossible without changing engine and making critters wear real armor. But still, it can be done by creating variable, seting it on equiping to current armor's deteriorationg level, and then reduce it on some number everytime merc get hit, and then when he unequip armor or dies, this armor's deterioration will be set on that variable.
