Title: Beginners Guides Competition!
Post by: Izual on June 14, 2010, 11:31:42 am
As proposed by Sius (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?action=profile;u=753) in a suggestion thread (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5420.0), we are starting today the Beginners Guides Competition!

There are three contests in this competition. Each contest is about writing one guide. The best three guides in each category will be rewarded (See below for the rewards details). You can participate in one, two or three contests by writing one, two or three guides (But not more than one guide in each contest).
The competition starts today, June 14th, and will end the 1st of July.

I just want to say that you should not hesitate and use also images, links and other creative stuff in your guides. Simple text guides are good but we are looking for the best guide here, not the average. Once upon a time this (http://forum.madbrahmin.cz/viewtopic.php?f=34&t=522) was a great guide for newcomers (warning: its in Czech). Also don't forget to mention great utilities and stuff from tools+mods section (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?board=23.0). Character calculators, transparent UI, namecolorizing editors... all that stuff is completely unknown for newcomers so it will be good to put some of it to your guides.

I. Getting started guide
Post your guide here (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5794.msg50021#msg50021).
This guide shall contain instructions about how to install the game, details of character creation, crafting, combat modes (RT/TB), tips about what you think is necessary, presentation of the game's most important towns, reputation system, basic commands, important game rules, etc.
The perfect thing for this guide would be to write it so that it leads a newcomer that never heard of Fallout 1&2 from the very beginning of the game install to the first levels, with solid knowledge on how to grow stronger. Try to see the game as if it was the first time you were playing it.

II. Combat guide
Post your guide here (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5795.new#new).
This guide shall be read by a newcomer that hasn't made any character yet, and wants to fight in PvP, but also in PvE (Two subguides ?). It is necessary to write fully detailed guides for all kinds of builds (SG/BG/EG/Unarmed/Throwing/Mercs-leader) and their sub-builds (Big Gun using a minigun or a rocket launcher, Small Gun using a P90 or a Sniper Rifle, etc). Ways to get your gear, basic combat tactics and Town Control system should be explained here too, as well as everything you think is useful. For players that would like to fight NPCs, it should contain informations about combat modes (TB/RT), slavery, crafting, encounters, FOnline's geography and also all kinds of informations that would be useful for a PvE player (Caravan carts, useful skills, and why is it interesting to do PvE only ?).

III. Crafting guide
Post your guide here (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5796.new#new).
This guide is meant to be a complete crafting guide. Most of the crafting formulas/requirements are on the wiki, so don't bother writing them in your guide (but you can put links), but you have to explain here what is crafting, how to craft, how to mine, what can be crafted and how, where you can find books, workbenches, what's the most useful to craft (in order to use it or sell it), and any hint or advice that is needed.

Rewards
For each contest, best three guides will be rewarded. All in all, 9 guides will be rewarded, 6 PAs will be given, 3 cars, 7 items and 100.000 experience points!

1st place
Guide written on wiki and kept up-to-date by wiki team.

Craftable Items... Does that include ammo?

Yes, if you think one bullet is worth it, we'll spawn it =P

Lol, you can't craft 1 bullet, you can only craft 50 or 100 ;D

OK, another question, does the guide has to be like Microsoft Word document or just post it in the forums?
Oh and another one  ;D Do you have to write all 3 guides?

Post your guide here (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5794.msg50021#msg50021).

So it's on forum, not on Word.

Yes.

Even though its not on the competition section, i would say that also counting in the tips and tricks for newbies guide vedaras made
would be appropriate simply because its one damn impressive piece of work which covers quite many choices and sections. Making your character, leveling up
and making fortune to be exact, and it explains every choice really well.

Im not too good with words but i must say once again that it sure is one DAMN impressive guide and not
counting it in would be a mistake.

leveling spots and getting enough caps to cover all the losses.

best guides already writen long times ago, and noone want reveal their secrets. why needed topic for copy+pastWiki and plagiarism old guides? just give rewards people, who write and update his own old guides)
Title: Re: Beginners Guides Competition !
Post by: Sius on June 14, 2010, 11:32:35 pm
Imho prices should alter a bit. 1st of all I don't understand why 2nd price comes with 3x craftable item while 1st and 3rd with 2x. Anyway my suggestions is this:

1st place
APA MKII
Highwayman
3x craftable item
50k exp

2nd place
APA
Scout
2x craftable item
30k exp

3rd place
Hardened PA
Buggy
1x craftable item
20k exp

While each car comes with loads of fuel.

Lucky roll
PA + one of these: bozar/gaus/pulse/vindicator
10k exp

Lucky roll should be price based purely on luck. When the competition is over each guide author will get into lottery no matter how many guides did he wrote and one lucky guy will come out of this with lucky roll prices.

There are few good guides out there but even those best lack some "insight" info. Most of these guides would be under "getting started" while crafting or pvp has shitload of things to write about but they are nowhere. Afaik there are no guides that show you how to actually play ingame. There is no leveling guide, what guns to use on what ocasions, how to roll your crafter, what to craft if you want to trade with it, whats not worth the mats etc... current guides show you how to do thing but they don't tell you what things are good to do and what things are waste of time. And thats the kind of guide that any noobie is looking for.

Veteran players should judge guides since GM/Devs don't know jack shit about playing as normal player.

Making 5 minutes cooldows per 5 units of ore/minerals surely shows that GMs and Devs are putting themselvs in newb's situation. Also I don't remember calling myself veteran.

Further pointless crap will be removed from this thread.

Well IMO devs should judge it, or instead of "guide competition" we will have "who has more friends competition"

This is a guide to help out players, correct? I'm not saying we have to have the judging completely player-based, but I think a 'players choice' award should be included.

Somehow I cant imagine devs being like "hey, this guide sucks, but lets make it a winning one, because my friend wrote it". If they want to give friends special items they will do it without competition.

Only an idiot could think that developers would prefer to cheat some stupid item for some player than to choose the best possible tutorial for THEIR game. I doubt anyone from the staff cares who controls the towns or who has the most expensive items. I know I don't. Also all GMs are long time players, many of them still play and I can assure you we know very well how playing on normal char look like.

Will they? I thought devs often kept out of player affairs unless they are needed for real, and not just to have their ass kissed.

I agree that staff should judge it, Devs probably have secret player characters, I know some GM's have had player characters in the past, and why the hell not?

Also uh... If that without competition thing counts with GM's... Can I have a Vertibird that bombs unsafe towns before entry, Jovy? I'll totally be your bestest friend!

Sorry, I didn't mean to imply anything.  Just pointing out that having Devs judge the guides is just as fraught with difficulties as having players judge them.  The result is the same either way.

That's all I meant.

Even if that was/is true, I honestly don't expect a prize, Mine didn't have pictures, and the glow effect didn't work like I thought it would. That's not a problem though, because I still got that warm and fuzzy feeling by helping.

he wont win 1st place though, its a crafting guide, not a mining manual, if the mining manual was part of a bigger guide he would have gotten it for sure.
and as for people saying they didnt write it for the prize thats absolute bs, theres only a few people that can say that and thats because they attempted to help people before the contest was started, just look at how many people copied and pasted ahs-9's starter section or all the people that copied and pasted directly from the wiki, if these people took any pride in their work whatsoever it would have been original, hopefully the devs and mods will be able to look through the bs and get to the real deals.

A complete guide, with a lot of accurate pictures, good advice and even explanations about advanced features like Namecolorizing. However, it lacks some informations about the good ways to start the game and to earn caps/experience.

Second place
With a total score of 6 points
RJ & BALTHASAR
[Their guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5794.msg55442#msg55442)
A complete guide, with tons of informations, but unfortunately not always really accurate for beginners. This guide has more to do with a manual and we have been thinking that, even if it is really well written, it could have discouraged newcomers. More pictures would really have helped with this guide.

Third place
With a total score of 5 points
ARICVOMIT
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5794.msg50038#msg50038)
A very well written guide, without any english mistakes, and containing useful informations. However, this guide doesn't go deep enough in explaining the game's mechanics and features.

II. Combat guide
First place
With a total score of 10 points
GORDULAN
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5795.msg52724#msg52724)
Some inaccurate informations and lack of good pictures made this guide getting less points than it should have. However, it explains the combat system quite well. Too short guide, though.

Second place
With a total score of 9 points
AVORAL
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5795.msg52921#msg52921)
A lot of text, not always useful, especially the endless part about SPECIAL. If you want to make the "perfect" build it seems like it is the best guide, however it wasn't really the goal of the combat guides. The end, with the "How to fight" part, is too short and inaccurate. But builds advice gave this guide more points.

Third place
With a total score of 6 points
Z0M2H14
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5795.msg55063#msg55063)
Written for both loners and people fighting in teams, and from the point of view of different build "classes". It gives useful advices about combat. The text needs formating - pictures - and improved language, but informations are there.

III. Crafting guide
First place
With a total score of 7 points
DYLAN FRASER
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5796.msg50243#msg50243)
Really understandable and avoiding to write useless information, this guide provides help about the basics of crafting, but it's sad that it recommends Shady Sands as a home.

Second place
With a total score of 6 points
NEXXOSFIN
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5796.msg55128#msg55128)
This guide explore professions and ways to earn caps through crafting. It doesn't have pictures, unfortunately, but features good avice that balance the loss of pictures.

Third place
With a total score of 4 points
WICHURA
[His/her guide] (http://fodev.net/forum/index.php?topic=5796.msg50472#msg50472)
A perfect guide - about gathering. However, crafting system isn't just about gathering resources, so thsi guide loses a lot of points there - but the quality of the informations about gathering saved it and made it go to the 3rd place.

Note : The guides will be written on wiki on contributors' time. No complain about the time it takes will be valid.

if your putting takashi's guide up on the wiki its going to need to be re-written to correct all the mistakes and inaccurate information and stuff that doesnt make sense. have fun, it looks like a helluva lot of work.

speaking of which, if one of your characters can't carry the HPA, could you be given it for another of your characters, seems a waste of either exp or an HPA if you can't.

i dont care about not winning first but when the guide is inaccurate and written in broken english it drives me crazy, if i saw this on the wiki as is id assume whoever was in charge of the wiki was on drugs.

I couldn't claim mine either...  But that's because my character can't carry it  ::)

hmm, got mine dropped off at my tent, all thanks to the all powerful izual, and I'm seriously considering taking pack rat instead of the third more crits so I can use the HPA, just wiped out 2 fire geckos, alone, with a 10mm pistol, they never got to move, happy happy bypass armour and kill next turn.

I can still exchange if for a normal PA, it's much lighter.
Title: Re: Beginners Guides Competition!
Post by: gordulan on July 16, 2010, 11:35:06 am
nah, no need really, just was gonna take the 3rd more crits if I had nothing else to take, with 10 luck I don't really need it, after reviewing the critical tables that is. Pack rat will give my looting runs a higher longevity in any case. That +22kg carry limit is a golden opportunity.

What, are the Powered Armors still bugged with pounds=kilos which make it far too heavy?

this armor should be nerfed - only useable for chars with Speechskill 300%
ok compromise - Doc and First Aid about 200% needed  :-*

Uhhh... Why?
I don't think many people are going to be fighting in them.

And if they are, they deserve it.  ;D

Even these armor are not so much OP, if only one guy in the gang have one, it can change a battle, but he is still killable and can loose his armor ;p

Where have you seen roleplaying over there? If there isn't it's not the fault of the power armors...
Title: Re: Beginners Guides Competition!

exactly, considering there's only 6 ingame at the moment and completely different people have them I hardly think that it would crash any sort of roleplayying, although, now I can play a BOS paladin in the lost hills bunker, and in NCR, if I feel like a daredevil.

That would be great, actually in my opinion it was the best combat guide in the contest  ;D
