Title: Wasteland 2 support
Post by: lisac2k on March 13, 2012, 11:12:35 pm
As some of you may already have heard, the great spiritual predecessor of Fallout and the game that was sleeping in the Halls of Fame for two decades is going to get a sequel. Yes, it is official as of today: the Kickstarter for Wasteland 2 (http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/inxile/wasteland-2) has opened its doors for anyone willing to pledge her/his support to it.

Funded through an innovative and flexible channel, opened for its community, based on the very principles of tabletop games, smelling like an old-skool brew - several members of the Rotators simply could not resist the opportunity to express their admiration and to wish all the best to a project like this one. We hope everyone sharing our expectations and feelings will take part in supporting Wasteland 2.

"The godfather of Fallout" is big news! Thanks for the info, lisac. I heard B-man was planning to do this but also heard he was meeting some road blocks up to now. A lot of people will be glad he's pushing it through!

I was introduced to Fallout via Fallout 2 which will always be my fav comp game of all time. But i understand Wasteland is really the original, so Fallout 2 was more like Wasteland 3. Which makes 2238 like Wasteland 9 or something, and Wasteland 2 will really be like Wasteland 10 lol. Looking forward to it!

I really like this idea of projects being financed by the community. I'm seriously thinking about pledging 50 or 100 bucks. (The 5k option looks great too, but can't afford that kind of money ;D)

This is why I do not like marketing trends and data analysis and all that bull shit. Everything is made to sell to a mass majority. I hate newer RPGs, why do we need every new RPG in first person/third person where things like stats don't mean anything. Everything is first person shooter gameplay any more.

Brian Fargo is a brilliant man, and I say good luck to him! I hope he gets enough money to release this game he has my support.

I never played wastelands, a little past my time but what happened to games like these where there was complex stat systems and such.

Bring back the golden era of RPGs! I miss games that had good writing and a good storylines, not the same voice over for every character repeating the same thing bumping into them. I've had enough of this arrow to the knee crap!

So "By Gamers. Buy Gamers." is still available? Cool lol.

I bet B-man will have 6M to work with, which hopefully will speed along their development of this project. Meanwhile those who declined him in the past are going to be having bad dreams.

yoz, the budget is going to be whatever kickstarter reaches which will probably end up being a few million when all is said and done.  It doesn't need a massive budget.  It isn't going to be one of those OMG THOSE TREES ARE PHOTOREALISTIC games that come out nowadays.  They will probably use a fairly cheap and versatile 3d engine, it won't be in development for 3+ years.  1 mil was probably for a very basic version.  I just hope it makes enough that they think about the ability to do multiplayer with squad vs squad combat.

P.S.
Nice to see them sticking with isometric view and TB combat instead of what the new xcom is doing.

Just saw that they will be doing a linux/mac version if it reaches 1.5 mil, how nice :)

okay im sorry that i have to point this out but doublefine (tim schafer) did a kick starter that hit 3 mil and isnt getting any cred as the inspiration for wasteland 2's kickstarter. anyways to my point for all you euros out there, doublefine has a video posted for europeans on how to donate correctly, this model will also work for people trying to donate to wasteland. please do some research before you tell people there basically isnt a way to donate.

You can get Ukash from hundreds of thousands of global locations, online, from wallets, from kiosks and ATMs.Find out below where you can get Ukash in your country.

U.K
InstoreOne backer from the Netherlands (Hi Norbert!) shared his method with us via email. Here are the steps he gave:
1. Bought a Ukash voucher.
2. Converted it to a Ukash NEO prepaid MasterCard.
3. Used that prepaid (debit) card to back the project

This is a totally different issue. Getting a million for Wasteland 2 is reasonable. Thinking to get many, many, many millions to buy the Fallout license from Bethesda (who most likely don't want to sell their cash cow anyway), while the majority of players thinks that Fallout 3 = best game ever, is not naive, it's just silly.

... this attitude if it isn't as it was then it's shit , is silly.

Most probably when wasteland 2 will come out there will be major whine how things aren't as they should be or how they aren't as they were , there is like not a single new game where " consumers " like you don't whine about something.

About the game itself. As said on NMA, I keep this quote in mind:
Quote from: Pete Hines from Bethesda
Q: So, Bethesda bought the rights to develop Fallout 3. A lot of fans are worried that Bethesda won’t stay true to the key elements of Fallout i.e. the isometric perspective and the S.P.E.C.I.A.L.-system. There’s even a fan that started a petition. Does Bethesda feel it’s important to stay true to Fallout or are they just looking to deliver great game?
A: I don't think we could make a great game without staying true to Fallout.

We should all note that those games we played over 15 years ago made a different imprint on our minds than todays games just because of our experience with computer games and maybe age. Hell, if I look at wasteland today I wouldn't even consider playing it because of the controls. But back then we took our time with games, enjoyed the little things. We were fine with the basic possibilities a game could offer and had fun playing it, the standard was completly different. Most of us are easily dissapointed by todays games because they can't awake the same feelings the old games did to our "youngster"-selves and I feel like that myself pretty often. In my opinion the time of "those" games is over for a long time. Computer games have changed from fine crafted art to products for the masses.

Let's see what wasteland2 will become and maybe enjoy a good game. No point on poking the corpses left by the great game studios of the past.

We have announced a major piece of good news today that inXile has reached an agreement with Obsidian for potential design assistance for Wasteland 2. What that means is that Obsidian’s Chief Creative Officer, Chris Avellone, is going to work with our team on the design and writing of the game!  It is important to note that we say "potential" as they will come aboard assuming we hit $2.1 million in funding. The good news is that we have already seen a spike in just the few hours since this was announced in a press release this morning.

Perhaps some of you haven't contributed yet, if that is your case remember... ONLY 40 HOURS LEFT! It's currently at 2.6 million, but there is room for improvement. Go, now!

I have ordered 50$ version. B. Fargo said, that game development would take cca 1 and half year? So the game should be released before a christmas.  ;D

So what do you think, will the funding get over 3M in this last 8 hours?

I bet it will get the 3 Millions on last minute. It's 7 hours to go and they have $2,823,347 plus the almost 90k squid from paypal.

But even if there will be toolsets - it will be a 3d turd, not as "oldschool" as many people thought it will be. My interest was long lost, especially since I was never a fan of the Wasteland universe.

its $3,040,299 after u add paypal pledges.
So the ultimate goal has been reached. MOD kit included.

Quote
It has hit all of the funding goals it set for itself, and because of that added Linux and Mac versions, Russian and Polish localizations, Chris Avellone design, Obsidian tools and a modkit to its development goals.

"GB: Assuming the game reaches or exceeds its funding goal, how long do you anticipate it will be before the game is ready for release? With over a year's worth of development under your belt already, is it possible we could be playing Wasteland 2 in 2012 yet?

Brian: We are gearing everything towards a ship in October 2013".

But even if there will be toolsets - it will be a 3d turd, not as "oldschool" as many people thought it will be. My interest was long lost, especially since I was never a fan of the Wasteland universe.

Im not sure about 3d, but info below is intresting:
"GB: Unfortunately, role-playing games have lost much of their original identity in recent years, thanks in part to the popularity of first-person action RPGs. How do you convince a newer or younger RPG fan who has grown accustomed to the action-focused titles to give Wasteland 2 a shot?

Brian: Well here is the beauty of fan funding... we don't have to convince some younger RPG player of anything. I am making this game for the wonderful fans who put their money behind us and not some nebulous group of new people. Let's make the game they all expect and let the chips fall where they may. There is just no way I'm going to consider anything that could let down the core".

After Brian Fargo goal with Kickstarer,Baldur's Gate 3 creator (http://uk.pc.gamespy.com/pc/baldurs-gate-enhanced-edition/1220929p1.html) , start thinking about same way.
