Title: Hammer Time! rookie miner's manual
Post by: Wichura on May 03, 2010, 03:55:54 pm
WARNING! THIS MANUAL IS A BIT OUTDATED. WILL BE UPDATED "SOON", SO STAY TUNED!

IMPORTANT NOTE: If you want to translate this to your native language, feel free to use also all pictures posted here.

Hammer, hammer never changes ...
After last wipe rocks can be mined in a few specific places. Hammer or primitive tool and couple minutes of spare time required.
Basic types of rocks are Iron Ore and Minerals, they look like this:
You mine two pieces of rocks per one dig. Cooldown is 2 minutes, cumulative to 20 - so you can practice hammer swinging until 20 minutes of cooldown appears, and then happily head to nearest workbench, to make more interesting things from those rocks:
Required 40% Science skill, for making Alloys 60%.

NCR
Location:

- Minerals
(http://img697.imageshack.us/img697/4715/ncrminemin1.jpg)

The most crowded mine, favourite fun: blocking deposits with smart placed slaves or brahmins.

Junktown

To see it on worldmap, you need to crawl near Junktown, favourite fun: stealing from diggers.

Favourite fun there is own3ding n00bz:

This kind of fun is performed by people too lame for regular PvP, and also too narrow-minded to find another entertainment.

Ghost Farm, north-east from Modoc - thanks to Dishonest Abe
Warning! This place is unguarded, also sometimes few armed fellas gather here before battle in Modoc.
Deposits placing:
- Iron Ore
(http://a.imageshack.us/img823/5773/ghostfarmore.jpg)

- Minerals
(http://a.imageshack.us/img823/8827/ghostfarmmin.jpg)

High Quality Ore & Minerals - colorful rocks
(http://imgcash5.imageshack.us/img338/6037/hqoremin.jpg?0.5325480281914035)
Orange ones are HQ Ore, cooldown 7 minutes per each. Dirt-white ones are HQ Minerals, cooldown 4 minutes per each.
To make HQ Metal Parts and Advanced Gunpowder 80% Science skill is required, to make HQ Alloys 100%.
Mining HQ rocks is risky, because all of HQ mines are unguarded.
There are two main ways to dig them - noobish: I'm taking only a hammer, get in and pray not to meet anyone, and less-noobish: I'm taking a hammer and also couple of well-geared fellas with me and we are shooting everyone in sight.
HQ mines are in Redding (inside the city), Broken Hills (inside the city) and nearby Gecko (north-east from town, separated location).

Gecko
Location:

Deposits placing:
- HQ Ore
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/2497/geckohqore1.jpg)

- HQ Minerals
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/6734/geckohqmin1.jpg)

Redding
Location:

Watch out while entering from here - couple of nasty rats live in this part of town!

Entering from here is free from rats.

Deposits placing:
- HQ Ore
(http://img580.imageshack.us/img580/430/reddinghqore1.jpg)

- HQ Minerals
(http://img24.imageshack.us/img24/296/reddinghqmin1.jpg)

Broken Hills
Entrance:

- HQ Ore
(http://img514.imageshack.us/img514/7994/bhore1.jpg)

- HQ Minerals
(http://img341.imageshack.us/img341/6248/bhmin2.jpg)

- Uranium
(http://img80.imageshack.us/img80/8454/bhuran.jpg)

It is the most crowded HQ mine due to be close to NCR, the most crowded city.

Scavenger's Life, few words about gathering junk
Junk can be found on any map with city ruins:

After entering map look carefully:

It happens that junk piles are hidden behind walls, and are invisible at the first time:

It also happens that map has some inhabitants already. Quick boots required:

I'm a lumberjack and I'm okay. I sleep all night and I work all day
On the same city maps sometimes trees are growing. To cut them, you need a hatchet or a primitive tool. Only trees with "hand" cursor can be cut, those with "binocular" cursor are only for admire them.

Be a vegetarian
Finding plants is random, I think that it is easily to find them at flat land.
- Fibers - knife (any kind) required!
- Fruits
(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/401/fruitst.jpg)
- Broc Flower
(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/2761/brocflower.jpg)
- Xander Root
(http://img263.imageshack.us/img263/1923/xanderroot.jpg)
Cooldown for last two plants is insanely high, I guess to prevent people from massively pimping their tents. This is senseless:

Electro-boogie - gathering electronic parts
Electronic parts can be found in broken computers with "hand" cursor on them. To get e-parts, use Repair skill on computer (30%? required, cooldown is 2 minutes per one part).

- Vault 15, third level
(http://img35.imageshack.us/img35/9171/epartsv15.jpg)

- San Francisco Mine, ground level
(http://img64.imageshack.us/img64/2460/epartssf.jpg)

- Mariposa Military Base, first level
(http://img88.imageshack.us/img88/6619/epartsmari1.jpg)

- Themepark, above Nuka-Cola machine
(http://img225.imageshack.us/img225/7753/themepark.jpg)

Flower Child - where to find chemical components
Chemical components are using to make drugs and medicines, like Mentants, Psycho or Radaway.

They are possible to gather at Waterworks Station, couple miles west from Hub.

To get them, you need to use Science skill on this strange machine. 60%? Science required, 3 minutes cooldown per one.

Also they are on second level of Toxic Caves, above Klamath:

Really good! A question - do you plan to update the guide, if a few things are changed in mining (and I'm sure they will change something sooner or later ;) )?
Because if so, then I'd like to make this sticky.

Klamath and Broken Hills mines are missing, but yes - I'm going to update them. I can't do it when topic is sticked?
Every suggestion what to add here is good, even stupid one :>

No, you can modify/or post here regardless if its sticky or not. ;) I was just asking, because if the manual doesn't get updated when new changes occur, than it's missing it's point. But if you say you update it, then it's good.

So -> Sticky.

Greate guide, sad it wasn't here few weeks ago though. =)

One thing is bugging me, could you please add here information on "slave mining"? 'Cause I've tried to mine with them, but they were so laggy, slow and uncoordinated.... They all dead now. :|

Few weeks ago I could use such guide myself :>

Dunno about slaving so much, I asked my orphans about them. Stay tuned.

There is another entrance to Redding mine, I put it here - elevator in a building next to graveyard.
But thanks, I will update it.

The last time I tried using it, it just didn't do totaly anything.... Oh well, gonna try it again. And I see that you have finaly made it to broken hills without dying. Last time I was there, I couldn't get even 1 hex away from spawn location.

Oh, well, first post...  ;D

Today I was gathering some fruits for fuel, and I noticed funny thing about yellow plant. I gathered stuff from first, went to another one to gather from it. I was checking something on fonline wiki, it took about 5 minutes or so. Then first plant just growed before my eyes when I switched to game window =D I dunno if this was a glitch, I will test it more while gathering some time in future.

EDIT:
Yeah, they really do re-grow ;D
Proof:

Already grabbed one:

Thanks for the manuals!

By the way, i found a way to stress-free HQ mining.

First thing i had to realise: i have nothing to lose:
1. I don't need to heal myself, except i want XP for healing.
2. I don't need to stuff my inventory with HQ mats, because i can lose them all and have to wait, what is frustrating.
I take only a single chunk of ore and the cooldown ticks away, while i transport it to my tent.
3. I don't need a sledgehammer. A primitive tool suffices - it's not a worth losing, also, when you repair it, you get XP.
4. As long as i have nothing, i'm invincible to PKs, because they want to humiliate me by robbing my stuff.
5. I control them, when i don't mine. They will get nothing, just kill me and walk away frustrated, because their plan to convince me, that they "defend" me, will fail. In the meantime, i can either conversate or taunt them.
6. When i die, i can heal myself with a weak powder or i can use my doc to get XP.
7. There's always time to talk to the local gang, because you have nothing to lose. Maybe they turn out to be nice people.

It's not strictly necessary to mine at night, but yes, i have a mining tent and dig shitloads of HQ, while being killed only every 5 time and losing merely a piece of ore and a primitive tool.

I have to say, the Redding mine is the most safe. All you have to do is just use preview before entering Redding, I also found out that people never guard the south entrance and the entrance to mine in case someone got in.

What happened to the minerals at the Junktown guarded mine? I've recently moved my operations south from NCR to a new base right outside Junktown - but there's only ore at the mine?

I can see where the mineral node used to be, why did it get removed? Surely it wasn't for "gamebalance".

Can I ask that the larger, underground mines be given some sort of map? I get lost in caves too easily, and spend ages running around, fining only basic materials and looking for the exit while overburdened and being munched to death by the local wildlife! For some reason, my choice for turn-based combat doesn't work in the mines...

VSB made excellent resources maps some time ago, unfortunately I didn't bookmark them.

In public places, like cities or mines, there is only Real Time combat mode.

Really nice guide.

I have to say though I prefered it how it was when I last played (being able to mine any heap of rocks in the desert), made it a lot safer! :P

Their is no mine near Nekr at east location. At least not showing up.

Their is a tabaco farm by Apocolip cult west coast area of Ac.
Not sure if you can craft cigs, I was unable to find it in menue and not able to craft at bench.

So, is that the querry buy JunkToe, or actuly east of Hub... The querry is West of JunkTown North west of Hub. . .
I have not seen a mine east of HUB, and I have traveled east of Hub, I wil check now. >.>

What on earth is marigolds?
You mean Mariposa(military base)?
If so,then you need to find a second elevator a bit south of the first one on the third floor. There are no enemies.
