Title: Junk detector 2000.
Post by: Horatio on August 04, 2012, 09:48:00 pm
Ladies and gentlemen, fellow wastelanders.

I'm proud to introduce my first mod for FOnline, a

Junk Detector 2000.

This little addon for your pipboy serves a purpose to ease your tedious junk scavenging by making the junk more visible (or audible for your character)

For installation, you are required to create a data/art/items directory in the folder where your master.dat is located and place the PUMP.frm from my mod in items directory. For turning the detector off, remove the file elsewhere.

"Oh look, Horatio's character's got Myron skin! ...wait a minute..."

*Moves head closer to screen*

That short brown hair, white t-shirt, blue jeans look familiar... Is that Jack from "Nox"? :D

You're welcome! ;) I know how difficult is it to find when its covered by walls or barely visible at night.

Is that Jack from "Nox"? :D

And i thought a white t-shirt reference were too general :) RainMan was so kind to fulfill my request with this little mod - (btw, check out Olympus 2207 demo, i like it a lot./subtle advertising))

As for JD2000, i guess there is a possibility to modify METAL FOOTLOCKER graphics to make them more visible, don't you think? Or would it be considered cheating?

1. You make a "data" folder in "fonline" folder. Open it.
2. Inside "data" folder you make a "art" folder. Open it.
3. Inside "art" folder, you make "items" folder. Open it.
4. Inside "items" folder, put all files you find in the archive.
5. If you want to disable the mod, put the files elsewhere to put it back later, if you want.

Downsides of this:
1. Bear traps underneath the yellow aren't visible at all.
2. Mines underneath the yellow are visible, but it can't be removed due the the overlaying picture.

Hertog is right, the "BEEP!" version is better imho, especially for footlockers. I am not using Horatio's footlockers mod but I do use the Junk one - as said, the beep version as it has the best balance between visibility and "metagaming"/screen spam :D

So much emotions, Gimper!... I almost feel like Mariah Carey! (http://media.tumblr.com/tumblr_m1i9pp2shX1qhrsqx.jpg) ;P

Okay, guys, i made two different versions, the first one just makes more room for defusing traps. The second one is "audible" version for the folks like Eternauta, who want more immersion in the roleplaying aspect of the game, instead of using metagaming HUDs.

They can be downloaded here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/auodig) and here (http://www.sendspace.com/file/l6lv8l)

As for me, i once thought about making traps with big, red exclamation marks, but... I guess that will be too much metagaming. Traps are meant to be hidden, so i guess it should be first implemented in game as a PE based feature, if implemented at all. They are a bitch to click on, though.

Awesome mods, Horatio. I like the idea of the one with sound, I think this game (and the original Fallouts) lacked some of it.

Which one is the sound mod, though, is it the .rar called "newfdetector" or the "clicking" one?

EDIT: I have installed the files from "newfdetector" and I got problems:

And with "clicking" I get this:

Are those proportions intended? :D
Title: Re: Junk detector 2000.
Post by: Horatio on August 24, 2012, 10:35:01 am
As for the arrow target, the proportions are intended to be like this. Because, let's face it - a chest hunting is checking a map for mere presence of a chest and not waste additional time in encounter. My mod increases the size of graphic, which falls as yellow thingy into the attention span of a player and Perception radius of his character rather faster(now how i see it disregard invisibility behind walls, because it give a wider angle for player's FoV - it was not intended.)

As for the "Click!", it was made to be a sound, and i just copied the proportions of last mod. I see the clicking sound is rather loud, if we compare the size to volume.  :-\
It should be perhaps "Honk!" instead.  ;D

Post by: Eternauta on August 24, 2012, 03:58:21 pm
Hehe, you are going to think I am a fool, but when you spoke about an "audible" version I thought you actually meant a mod with sound files, and that you said it was for people like me because of what I did with the Amboy Tactical Tool :P

I personally won't be using these footlockers mod because I am not a blueprint hunter, although this can obviously change in the future. I'm keeping the Junk mod however :D

Horatio! This is fantastic!

I am red/green colorblind. I have a lot of trouble seeing junk when it's close to other objects, especially in the dark. THIS MOD HELPS ME A LOT, MAN!

I also hunt a lot of blueprints. As we all know, it's a time-consuming grind to enter/ext so many encounters over and over, zoom in, watch for traps, keep searching, etc etc etc. So the footlocker mod helps a lot too.

I want to say a BIG THANK YOU, and contact me for payback. What do you need in-game? Just tell me, mister! I want to reciprocate this excellent work you did.

Ah sweet! Great work Horatio! Now my eyes won't hurt as much when I try to find junk during encounters. I'll also make use of the footlocker mod when I want to hunt some blueprints...when I make an alt of course. Keep on the good work! :3

Although the junk detector its a very useful tool Id prefer junk looks like the shit, with that red contour which can be seing through walls (I dont know if thats possible). The beep version have a problem, the beeps occupy much space... I had to tidy my whole tent because I couldnt see the ground due to the junk beeps, now i have to stack them and it sucks.

The beep version is supposed to take much space, so you can click more comfortable on it. You can turn it off by moving the file in another folder.

In my opinion junk is not hard to take ( to click on it ) its hard to find when its covered with walls and those beeps are too "agressive". Anyway its a good work

If you don't mind me asking, what's the best way to go about modifying the .frm files? I currently use an item highlighter, which makes all items on the ground show up as if you had your cursor over them (little yellow outline). The highlighter is just an .frm pack that was made for use with Fallout 2, and it has become outdated since the devs keep changing the how items look on the ground. It's damn near impossible for me to see cigarettes and stimpacks most of the time.

I've used a program called "FRM convert". It should be on NMA. Probably other types, too.

However, FOnline:2238 (probably whole engine, not sure) makes it convenient by allowing .png files to work in the same way without having to convert. Just need to put the file with same name as the .frm file in the right directory. ex: data\art\items

Thanks a lot, Abe. I'm editing the .PNG files I found in the faction.zips and it's they seem to be working fine.
