Title: FOnline: 2238 under MAC OS X
Post by: Teri_Jane on July 27, 2010, 02:33:39 pm
I play for about a week. Since today, only at home, because in my workplace we work on Macs. I was looking for a way to launch the game on my Mac, but everyone said its impossible. Of course, I could install Windows on my machine, but I have to have my OS X open all the time, because my boss likes to check what we are doing, from time to time.
After long, long search i finally found a way to play on my Mac in OS X, so I want to share it with other Mac users. Hope it works for you too.

(I'm on an Intel machine, so probably it may not work on PowerPC machines. But it never hurts to check.)

1.
Code: [Select]
http://www.codeweavers.com/products/cxmac/ This is an application which enables Windows programs to run in OS X. You have to get the app, one way or another. Install the application and run it.

2. Download FOnline client, and run it. Since you have CrossOver installed and running, it should automatically detect Windows app. Install FOnline (installer will look exactly the same as in Windows).

3. Finder window will probably pop up with the Launcher.exe. If the Launcher works for you - great. But it didn't work for me. If you have problems launching Launcher - like me - go to folder where FOnline is installed.

4. Launch Updater.exe. If it works for you - great. But it didn't work for me. If your Updater won't work - copy FOnline folder to a pendrive and find someone with PC. Updater.exe should work well on Windows :) Update your game and go back to a Mac. Copy FOnline folder to the same place you've installed it.

5. Launch FOnline.exe.

Now this worked for me, I am playing FOnline on my Mac, in OS X. I can easily hide my window if i see my boss :D
If you need to configure your FO and the launcher won't work, you can launch FOConfig.exe - of course with CrossOver running.
Since I'm not a Mac Expert - I cannot help you much if this way won't work for you. But if it works - great, see you in the Wastelands :)

CrossOver is commercial and somewhat upgraded Wine, so if you want to save some money, you can try just Wine:

Since Wine refused to work for me - I used CrossOver, you can find older versions cheap and still will do.

Hey Izual, why don't you go to CodeWeavers and tell them you're advertising their product on this forum? If they'll give a damn, they might give you some bingedrink money.

If you have a free alternative, I'll be happy to put it instead.

Thanks for your work !

Using Crossover, i did manage to make it work.

A few differences here though, so if you're having trouble (starting Fonline.exe does nothing), maybe this can help :

[i'm using Mac os X leopard and i'm a total noob at it.]

+The installation is fine, just do ''open...'' then choose the installer.

+Then I had to copy the folder Crossover created to put it somewhere else, so i could open the files in the folder using the ''open...'' command.

To have CrossOver show the folder, you have to go to ''manage Bottles'', then to advanced, then ''Open C: drive in finder''.

+Then copy the folder somewhere on your drive.

Now, with this technic apparently, the updater works. I found out about that later so maybe you just need to run it with crossover then start the game.

+ But I had to do a manual update, using a updated folder of fonline. Here are the files you have to copy to update the game, basically all .dat files (Thanks AhBobsaget) :

baldude
cablack
cadesert
CRITTER
FACTION
faction001
faction002
faction003
faction004
faction005
faction006
faction007
faction008
FONLINE
fonline001
fonline002
khancrit
longhairdude
MASTER
othercrit
unarmedcass
vaultboy

and fonline.exe.

At this point, the game was starting but i would get an Error on start.

+Then, one last thing :

Copy all d3dxxx.dll you can find in up-to-date fonline folder to your new fonline folder.

It resolved the last problems i was having.

Since it was a pain for me, i thought i'd put up all the info that was useful to me in here, maybe it'll help other folks. Oh and now the updater works.

Many thanks to Misiolap, a true Wine Warrior.

Good luck !

I had a problem with wine, after several logins, game tells me to wait 10 minutes(relogin timeout) no matter how long I waited. I got rid of that only re-installing wine and then it happened again.

This would happen to me even using windows.

I had to go back to the last char i used, log out on worldmap, then it would work... Sounds random maybe )

This is because some maps don't allow logging out on them, and thus your character stays there for the length of the server life (logged out on restart), unless you of course do this.

I play under MAC OS - everything works perfectly, with the help of crossover 9.1, but there is one problem ... when I'm scrolling the screen, the screen flickers constantly. As if there were no sources of light. However, if the action takes place during the day everything is normal.

after last wipe (30/08/10), game has become harder to run using Wine.

I use crossover on MAC and the game is unplayable because of graphical glitches. I hear users on Linux have graphical glitches but it's playable.

Anyone else experiences new problems with Fonline since the wipe ?

Yea, updating to crossover 9.1 (wine 1.2) made the game playable for me.

I gonna share my experience with getting it running under OSX.
My machine is an intel macbook with Leopard 10.5.7

I have ehrr... donwloaded a copy of Crossover, but ended up using a modification of it called Crossover Games (both 9.1). I don't think there is any difference, however.

So, first I opened my newly ehrrr... acquired copy of Crossover and opened the installer via "CrossOver Software Installer". It installed fine in a new xp bottle, but the Fonline 2238 Launcher (the only app that showed up in Crossover's application folder) did not run.

Then I tried running different exe's from the Fonline folder via "Run command" function (right-click on the icon of CrossOver in dock, choose run command, then chose the bottle from which you want to run an exe). Nothing worked, and the launcher returned an error asking me to install the windows version of Mono to run .NET exes or something like that.

Instead of installing Mono I went back to the "CrossOver Software Installer", and installed Microsoft NET frameworks 1.1 and 2.0 (it's under Runtime Support Components, crossover downloads them on its own; install in a new bottle).

After that running exes via "Run Command" worked. I could open Config.exe and Fonline.exe, however, I still cannot use the Launcher :)

The game runs fine, there are some distortions (apparently more of them in full-screen than in windowed mode), but overall it's alright.

So, that's my story. Hopefully, somebody will find it helpful.

BTW, yes, I tried using wine, but for installation it required XCode, and I lost my installation CD a long time ago and I am not a part Apple Developer Program (that costs 99$). So there was no legal way for me to get XCode and run Wine, so that is why I went with crossover. If I have to (ehrrr...) spend money, then I'd rather spend it on a working product than on a product that can help me run another open-source program.

I running MacBook Pro Leopard 10.5.8.

Known issue with textures.

Guys, if anyone get issues with the graphics (I mean textures flashing or some other kind of problems) - try to launch FOConfig.exe, then go to the Video section. Set Cache Sprites to 100, then set Texture Size to 2048. It works fine to me, so you can try this resolution too. Cheers. ;)

If you guys are having any problems with the config, make sure that your FOnline bottle is the Default Bottle, by going Configure > Manage Bottles then click on the FOnline bottle on the left, and on the right under the tab "Advanced" click "Make This the Default Bottle". Now, any .exe you run, will run under that bottle. I find that clicking on the config once makes it jump in the Icon on the bar, but it stops, but if you do it a second or third time, it'll run.

:)   First thing we need is to start with a slaver build. The slaver build will be pretty different for every role you wanna play in the game. Let me show some basic builds.
Standard pistol guy build (I took a perk here that's especially useful when you're taking Ghoul Crazies with sniper rifles.)
This guys doesn't crit much and does not have super duper damage, but he can shoot up to five times before having to "reload" his AP. If you wish you can remove two points from agi and add them to perception, it will increase your sight range a lot, for cost of attack speed.

Hi all,

I found out about FOnline yesterday. I just can say WOW!!

I tried already alot to get it running on OSX 10.6.8.
After i managed to install it with crossover. Then several hours later the updater was willing to work.
I have now the Problem of not having a DataFiles2238.cfg and having FO2238Config.exe that doesn't seem to run. (FOnline.exe runs properly, i can make changes and save them.)

So I am looking for the bits of code i need to write a DataFiles2238.cfg with textwranger and save it in the bottle. If thats possible at all?
Here's the 2 lines in my DataFiles2238.cfg that i created in windows7 with the FO2238Config.exe:
Code: [Select]
C:\Games\FOnline\master.dat
C:\Games\FOnline\critter.dat

– Could it be that FO2238Config.exe is not working because it was updated and not originally installed with crossover? Does it give something like to set rights within Crossover-bottles, which exes have permission to run?

did anybody manage to get the Launcher or FOnlineGL running with crossover?
or a working fullscreen mode?

Thanks for any help!  :D

Mac OS X support for FOnline just started (first related commits in SDK repo are just month old, that's blink of eye in FOSDK world), so i guess you're on your own (read: including other OS X users) with tries to run FOnline~

If you feel like you can help with improving OS X support, you may try to contact with cvet (lead programmer) on FOnline main site (http://fonline.ru/). Best if you have enough knowledge about your system to actually help with fixing current issues (whatever they are) and you're stubborn enough to do whatever it takes to identify/smash/workaround them - speaking from own experience now, after moving from Windows to Linux ;)
