Title: FOnline: 2238 under LINUX
Post by: nagzuku on February 19, 2010, 11:13:23 am
Quote from: vedaras

This guide was made by me, it was made on Ubuntu 10.10 so no one checked on other linux os, it might work as well. And with this guides help you will be able to play fonline in even better conditions as in windows, because there are no downsides, and program works much more stable, crashes are very rare. Click  here (https://docs.google.com/leaf?id=0Bwh_DVDKT6lMMjYxMTBiNzMtOGJiMS00YTJhLTk1YTctNDZmN2E4ZmNhYTg1&hl=en) or here (http://wipe.temote.tk/vedaras/ubuntu%20guide.odt) to download installation guide. Enjoy!

I am going to  remove Windows 7 really soon, but I hope  this  game  will run under Wine (http://www.winehq.org/).
Is Wine  really necesscary for this ?

Works almost perfectly under wine for me.
Disregard any informations about wine-0.9.38 needed to run it, that applied to old versions of client - new client works with recent versions of wine.

Fallout 1 & 2 Wine test results  (contain FAQ how to run it  too* ) on various versions of Linux:

Fallout 2

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?bShowAll=true&bIsQueue=false&bIsRejected=false&sClass=version&sTitle=&sReturnTo=&iId=319

(conclusion - works fine on newest versions, doesn't work at all on older versions form 2006 )

Fallout

http://appdb.winehq.org/objectManager.php?sClass=version&iId=43

(works fine)

Somebody should add FO 2238 Wine  tests, I have not found it yet :P

Keep in mind, Fallout 1 and 2 are - regarding FOnline - totally different games, even if the optic is nearly the same.

I got it working through WINE a different way, since it seemed to want me to install Mono as well as the .Net platform in WINE.

I installed it painlessly on my Windows XP boot and then simply used WINE to run Fonline.exe.

.Net is probably needed for launcher and installer, but you can get compressed package without need to use installer.

Hmm, in my cause, FOnline seems to lagging insanely under Wine 1.1.31 on Ubuntu 9.10...

Were there any further settings i missed, guys?

Edit: i reinstalled my video drivers.

The game runs now even smoother than on my old system. Gotta check this weekend on freezes.

At current point of development it would be a big waste of effort to change the rendering engine.

Indeed and if it works in WINE, I see no reason for this, because in theory, the performance should be just as good.

It seems that my distribution doesn't allow FOnline to use plugins (because of .ini files?), ignores some keys, like ~ or question mark and don't support higher resolution. But perhaps i just don't know how to toggle it as a Linux newb and humbly ask for help.

I today updated on arch linux to wine 1.3.1 and at start the game crashes every time... perhaps this is some windows vista compatibility addiotion  ;D
Anyways with wine 1.3.0 it runes flawless, 1.2.X too I think...

When exiting the game, I recommend to wait a few minutes after logging out, before quitting, because it seems the relog timer can be fucked up somehow by this...

Put in your Winde C drive (~/.wine/drive_c/) file named ".windows-serial"
containing just some random number (I recommend 3-8 digits).

Any help for this?

Anyone!?

Very slow = how slow? 5fps?

Check if you have working 3d drivers, and working direct rendering.

For further assistance post your graphics card model, and run the following command from terminal emulator and post results:
Code: [Select]
glxinfo | head -n 5

Maybe you should try installing closed-source ATI driver (if it supports your kernel/X.org version).

wine itself is known to be unstable in regards of compatibility from version to version, maybe try an older version (or newest? If it's not the one you're using.)

Hey guys !

I'm trying to play under Linux and I have two problems : under wine, the FOnline.exe seems to work quite fine, but I need to update it !
And the Launcher.exe doesn't run well ! Wine used to say it was a Mono application.

So I installed Mono on Wine, and it seemed Mono was already installed on my Ubuntu 10.10.

Two situation :
First on the Mono/Linux, I had a problem with the winform package not installed. So I installed it.
Then it worked better, but I still get one error, and then nothing happen :
Here's the output on a console :
Quote
(./Launcher.exe:14685): Gdk-WARNING **: GdkWindow 0x5c00003 unexpectedly destroyed
Nothing more, nothing less. It's not very helpfull I guess...

And here's what I get using Mono/Wine (I tried two version, the last one, and the one that is packaged on Ubuntu, 2.6.7, same result on both) :
Quote
The launcher has crashed because of the following exception:
System.PlatformNotSupportedException: This platform is not supported
at System.Net.Sockets.Socket.Disconnect (Boolean reuseSocket) [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

at FOLauncher.frmMain.PingOnline () [0x00000] in <filename unknown>:0

Then, if I want long enough, I get this :
Quote
GetThreadContext failed

It's kinda depressing... using Mono/Wine, it seems you can use no socket, nor thread ^^... that's just stupid.
Is there something I can do to fix that ?

Also, the PDF manual is now a dead-link (you can download the file, but it's a zero-byte sized file :p).
Maybe it could help if someone could put it back online ?

Don't try to get launcher working, just go in your FOnline folder, and launch the updater manually.

Woow.
That's pretty cool cuz Ubuntu(i dunno which version sadly) works on PPC Toshiba G900.
It's first step to have fonline on your phone.
I think that every pocket pc with hardware keyboard and windows mobile 5.0-6.5 can handle this Ubuntu emulator.
I'll test it out later cuz now I don't have my Toshiba g900...

sorry guys for the broken link that it was, i uploaded it to page where it said that the link will be deleted after 6th month only if it will be unused, but these fags deleted it anyway. Also i uploaded the guide in .odt format, so open office is recommended for viewing it (MS office should open it as well). i dont know, it worked as fast as in windows for me when i tried that out, you can try right mouse click on the game and chose "configure wine"  in applications part try chosing different windows version and see if it helps out,  if not check if your graphics part looks like that:

p.s. i dont know what your graphic card is, but for my nvidia i found the drivers easy :> also go to your fonline directory and check config.exe (or what is the configuration executable dont remember now :D ) if settings for graphic part of the game are correct.

also for further problems you should remember that: in "configure wine" part you might want to try changing sound drivers (mostly between OSS and ALSA), or changing hardware acceleration of these drivers from full to emulation if the game doesnt run real smooth.

For same reason you should be aware of your graphic driver settings. (for nvdia its in system -> administration -> nvidia X server settings) If you select override or enhance option in anti aliasing section, it may cause game crashes in several games (with some it wont of course).

p.p.s due to the bugs, anti aliasing in wine is disabled by default, so fonline can run slow cause of that in fonline configuration executable you need to disable multisampling, or you need to change wine registry to enable anti aliasing, to do that please read - http://forum.winehq.org/viewtopic.php?t=7300&sid=2e6450d291cf8db3985b2e5bbf90229a

I don't know if this has been mentioned before guys, but always update to the latest version of wine. This seemed to fix many problems for me, and with the latest version the game plays flawlessly.

Cheers

yes i had the very same problem! damn it annoyed me but i finally got it working, the problem was that drivers we had were from 1.2 wine, and at least for me synaptic didint find any 1.3 drivers at first, so fonline didint run on 1.2 but i had sound and it did run on 1.3 but without sound. What i did was adding ppa to my update sources https://launchpad.net/~ubuntu-wine/+archive/ppa?field.series_filter=maverick . Then i needed to completely remove both wine and play on linux, also i manually deleted all remaining folders in playonlinux, except i left wineprefix folder. Then i installed play-on-linux again, and checked up upon synaptic, and it finally had 1.3 drivers of wine for installation. And it now works smooth and with sound :> Here are all packages you need to install:

I'm compiling my Wine from sources and overwritting the PPA repo with the compiled source. More precisely, I compile it with --with-gnutls --with-png arguments.

Here's a quick guide to get FOnline working on Debian Squeeze with an older ATI gfx card (Now unsupported by ATI Proprietary drivers)

Uninstall all fglrx drivers
# apt-get remove fglrx*

Install the radeon drivers, just follow this guide:
http://wiki.debian.org/AtiHowTo

Make sure that your gfx card works by installing the testing applications
# apt-get install mesa-utils

Then test the rendering capability with
# glxinfo|grep render
It should print out
direct rendering: Yes
If it doesn't, make sure you have the libgl1-mesa-dri and linux-firmware-nonfree installed
# apt-get install libgl1-mesa-dri linux-firmware-nonfree
Restart gdm/kdm/xdm after installing those and test again.

If you still wont get direct rendering to work make sure you have radeon as the driver in your /etc/X11/xorg.conf

When you get to a point where you have direct rendering supported (glxinfo|grep render returns YES!)
You can install wine FROM source the package in squeeze is fucking old and won't work so just grab the sources from wine website and compile away. If you don't know how just google around.

Now that you've got wine installed you can try to install Fonline. Wine will probably tell you to install gecko and press yes when asked.

You can try running FOnline but if you get very low FPS this is what you need to do.

Edit your xorg.conf and add bold lines to your device, gray lines are optional
Section "Device"
        Identifier  "Default Device"
        Driver      "radeon"
Option "AGPMode" "8" // Set this to what your GFX card supports! (Mine is a radeon Xpress 200m and it supports AGBMode 8 )
        Option "AGPFastWrite" "on"
        Option "DRI" "on"

EndSection

Restart gdm/xdm/kdm and try to run FOnline. Now you should have a fairly good FPS.
There are some registry changes you can change/add
What I did was add these strings to the registry
#wine regedit
Current user -> Software -> Wine -> Direct3D
DirectDrawRenderer "opengl"
Multisampling "disabled"
PixelShaderMode "disabled"
UseGLSL "disabled"
VertexShaderMode "none"

That should give you a very smooth game.
Have fun gaming ;)

I have tried twice to install Fonline using wine in Ubuntu 11.04, the first one I simply ran the installer with wine, the second I followed the guide to use PlayOnLinux. I can run the launcher and the updater, but I get a crash when the client starts. I have a Geforce 9500 with 270 drivers, a dual-core Celeron and 1Gb RAM. Is there some know incompatibility with this wine version or some extra step not included in the guide?

@rogerdv: try checking "Logging in FOnline.log" in FOConfig, and paste it here, it'll give some info about at which stage the client crashes.
For currently used client on 2238 I can confirm it working on wine-1.0, nvidia drivers 96.43.19 (legacy drivers for older cards).
wine-1.2.3 results for me in crash @ "Sprite manager initialization..."

PlayOnLinux is only framework for Wine. It just does installing and running Windows games easier, but it wont help you with drivers.
1. What linux distribution do you use?
2. What is result of running "glxinfo | grep rendering" in console?
3. Try running "wine FOnline.exe" from konsole (you have to be in game directory).

1. Ubuntu 11.10
2. direct rendering: Yes
    GL_NV_parameter_buffer_object2, GL_NV_path_rendering,
3.a. wine FO2238Config.exe works fine. I pointed to master.dat and critter.dat files.
3.b. FOnline crashes.

the console is:

Code: [Select]
fixme:heap:HeapSetInformation (nil) 1 (nil) 0
fixme:msimtf:ActiveIMMApp_Activate Stub
fixme:win:EnumDisplayDevicesW ((null),0,0x335c5d0,0x00000000), stub!
wine: Call from 0x7ed635d9 to unimplemented function d3dx9_36.dll.D3DXCompileShaderFromResourceA, aborting

In crashDump.txt. I see

Code: [Select]
C:\windows\system32\d3dx9_36.dll (7C730000) as a last line.
So it seems I miss dx9. How do I install it? There was nothing about it in tutorial,
so I thought it's included in wine.

By the way, when I run PlayOnLinux, i got this warning:
"you don't seem to have a 3d acceleration. We advise you install and eneble it!"

p/s/
In PlayOnLinux I have installed Wine versions: 1.3.31
but when I do "Configure wine" on fallout icons, I see (in About) Wine 1.2.3.

In Synaptich Package Manager I have:
winetricks, wine1.2, wine1.2-gecko installed.
If I am to install 1.3 it request to remove 1.2.

What Wine version you guys use with recent FOnline update and on which Ubuntu?

Direct rendering: Yes - means that you have 3D enabled, so the problem might be, as you said, missing directX.

1. Do you have "C:\windows\system32\d3dx9_36.dll" in the folder? (the path should be something like "/home/[your_username]/.wine/drive_c/windows/system32/")
2. Try installing DirectX by running "winetricks directx9" command.

So I run Ubuntu 11.10 on a Toshiba Satellite Netbook. My screen resolution is 1366 x 768 (16:9).

I managed to set up fonline with playonlinux according to the tutorial, and, while shortcuts don't work, I'm able to still run everything (client, configs, updater etc.) through terminal using wine. Playing windowed the game seems to run fine. This is, however, not particularly workable on a netbook. The game would only really be playable full screen. No matter what resolution I play it at though, when the game is full screen the mouse rubber-bands to a ridiculous degree. It's often a challenge just to navigate to the exit button.

Master.dat and Critter.dat have been set. I've tried adjusting scroll speed and scroll delay in settings. I suspect it has something to do with the computer changing it's resolution and user input not entirely translating through wine, but I'm very new to all of this (linux, terminal commands...) all together, so I could be way off. I've tried changing my computer's resolution to 1024 x 768 (the resolution I run fonline at) before running, but it doesn't seem to change anything.

Any ideas?

Hello.

I'm trying to run FOnline 2238 on my Ubuntu Gnome Remix (12.10). when I open the game the loading screen appears, but it crashes.
I runned it with the terminal to see the error, that is the following:

Code: [Select]
err:ntdll:RtlpWaitForCriticalSection section 0x7e7671e0 "x11drv_main.c: X11DRV_CritSection" wait timed out in thread 0009, blocked by 002d, retrying (60 sec)
And the game creates a txt log:

Any Idea? :x

Thanks in advance.

Idris.

You should have some drivers installed to get 3d support, type in terminal "dpkg -l | grep intel" and say if you have some packages or not.

dpkg -l | grep intel
ii  intel-gpu-tools                           1.3-0ubuntu2                              i386         tools for debugging the Intel graphics driver
ii  libdrm-intel1:i386                        2.4.39-0ubuntu1                           i386         Userspace interface to intel-specific kernel DRM services -- runtime

I think I have the driver :P
