Hatchet as melee weapon.

It was already suggested but let's try again.

First question is to devs if it's possible without Cvet intervention. If yes then here we go:

Why implement hatchet as melee weapon before waiting for 3D?

Simple. Inventory and world image (thought not most fitting) is already in-game. Nobody knows when 3D will come out so why not enjoy that small change already?
There is no special animation for hatchet attack but that's not problem. Club animation could be used for hatchet melee attack (in my opinion it's fitting very well). This would also change animation of chopping wood - hitting tree with club like animation would look good (at least in my opinion). We could discuss that it's not most fitting because you don't see blade on stick but on the other hand flamer/lsw/laser rifle/plasma rifle use exatcly same animation.

How that implementation would work?

To not make complicated we could say that it would deal similiar damage as Sledgehammer - without any special perk. Why? Because hatchet would be one-handed weapon therefor it could be used even with crippled arm - and this would balance sledgehammer vs hatchet.
Crafting requirements should say as they are at the moment.
Now there should be added swing type of attack (I think Ghosthack said that it's not problem to add more type of 'attacks' to weapons/items, if I interpreted it in wrong way then sorry) that club got. And there we go - a "new" melee weapon without (hopefully) too much work. Now you will be able to defend from those nasty rats with hatchet showing that it's not only wood cutting thingy.

So what you guys think? And again, devs, is it possible? :)

I like this idea very much, I've been thinking about this for a while now. It's kinda stupid if you think about hatchet only as a tool :/

Hehe... hatchets as weapons... should do a shit load of damage to that ONE critter or npc... like +5 damage to Rats or Tribals....

WHAT WE NEED IS A TOMAHAWK. Make the hatchet also throwable ;D Just imagine, fighting raiders with your axe, chopping ones shoulder, blocking another ones spear, BASHING HIS SKULL OPEN, THROWING THE AXE AT THE LAST ONE HITTING HIS LUNGS, WIPING OFF SWEAT YOUR FOREHEAD, PPIIICKKK THHEEE HAAATCHCHEEEEET UUUUUP AAAAAAAAAAANNNNNNND

This idea is briliant! ;D And if it is possible, hatchet could have "cutter" perk or sth similiar (you have 90% chance onto crippling arm when you are aiming at someone ^^)

I just realized that club weapons attacks require one less AP than sledgehammers.
Worth to note for 'balancing part'.

well, if i were living in a wastland and i had a hatchet, i would use it as a weapon instead of throwing rocks or trying my stronge kicks on my enemies.

I suppose there's not much reason not to have it, but equally its going to be another melee weapon thats similar to lots of other ones - so its hardly at the top of the list to be added.
