Make weapons and armor stackable
« on: October 05, 2010, 07:32:22 am »

Please make all weapons and armor stackable.
As they are not because of detoriation, I propose that merchants auto-repair them to ZERO detoriation.
Makes sense also, because a merchant has a motivation for this (look at car trading in real life), this is a higher market value.
Also auto-unload the weapons and put the ammo in ammo category. (No gun shop would keep dozens of full, and half loaded weapons lying arround).

Saves a lot of time too, not just for clicking trough all those weapons and armor, but also for checking their detoriation.
They would only differ in repair attemps counter, but you could seperate that in 2 or 3 categories (virgin weapons/armor, used ones 1-4 repairs, heavy used 5-8 repairs).
It is not like weapons and armor show their exact repair count at the moment, so that would be no disadvantage for anyone.

Edit:
Armor and Weapons broken beyond repair should be recycled to some of the ressources needed to build them.
10mm Pistol needs 1 wood and 3 junk to build, so a broken weapon could be recycled to maybe 1 or 2 junk in merchants inventory (maybe even in players inventory, if he has high enough repair skill).
Alternative: Broken and beyond repair items are immediatly turned into caps in merchants inventory.

This would include professional repair shops as well.
Lets say your character is good with weapons, but lacks repair skill. Then it would be possible to pay a merchant for fixing it.
Selling that broken gun for X Caps and buy it back instantly repaired for X+Y Caps.

I like turning broken items into their resources. But also even if an armor has 0% det it doesnt stack... so first we should suggest stacking of 0% det armors...if this is a bug, I saw in Junktown store guy had a lot of 0% leather armors that didnt stack...

As i support the stacking of armors and weapons in a kind you suggested, i would not want merchants to auto repair it because i like buying det'd weapons cheap and repair them myself.

Also, think about the exploit in repair system, just get caps and ye olde trader repairs your 99 % det weapon to 0 % so you buy it back. a lot of people would rather do this then spend another 1-2 hours gathering ressources and crafting it anew or skill-repair it to its certain death.

You are right on this point. maybe there might be some special shops for this. for instance general store can sell the weapons without repairing. but a gun store should be able to repair them before putting on sale. or you might be able to simply pay some caps to an assistant in one of these shops to repair it for you. for instance if your gun costs 1000 caps on market, and its det is 60%, you may pay 300 caps to have it repaired. (numbers are just for examples) this may give the players the opportunity to choose whether to get it repaired or craft a new one.

Also, think about the exploit in repair system, just get caps and ye olde trader repairs your 99 % det weapon to 0 % so you buy it back. a lot of people would rather do this then spend another 1-2 hours gathering ressources and crafting it anew or skill-repair it to its certain death.

the price change would prevent this. finding caps is generally more diffucult than finding some minerals, wood or ores. the price of a gun may chance after repearing, depending on its previous det.(as i mentioned above) the 30 second rule while trading with a merchant makes it impossible to check the dets of every weapon you want to buy. this way you may be sure that you have bought a det 0% gun.

the 30 second rule while trading with a merchant makes it impossible to check the dets of every weapon you want to buy. this way you may be sure that you have bought a det 0% gun.

Barter timeout is based on your barter skill. If you have barter skill 30 points you have 30 seconds, with 100 points it would be 100 seconds.
Anyway this is too short to check status of every weapon (or just check the stat of this particular weapon on the bottom of the list, many many clicks away),
while it is annoying to wait for another char finishing trade right now.
Auto-Discharge and Auto-repair would speed up bartering enormous, it would also increase ammo supply and make weapon crafting more attractive, because weapon prices would rise significant (because they all have 0 det.)

There are only 2 drawbacks figured out so far
1. No realy cheap guns from merchants for self repair
2. Ingame logic problem: Why should a bartender be able to repair a weapon?

Of course it would be possible to have only gun/armor traders auto-repairing weapons and armor,
while bartenders, brahmin traders and other NPCs just have them auto discharged.
Their inventory is actualy not that much crowded.
You could still buy cheap detoriated or broken weapons from those NPCs, or from other players (or loot them).
This would perhaps boost P2P trading. I´m not sure, but I guess those Übersoldiers out in the wasteland seldom have repair skill >150.

I would rather see some subcategories in the trading system combined with stackable radios:
- armor per tier
- weapons per type: melee, hand guns, SMGs, rifles and machine guns, BG, EW
- ammo and drugs don't need a subcategory
- misc: gathered items, crafted items like metal parts, and meat jerkey, radios if not made stackable, books, all that's left

@HertogJan

This could be done in addition. I don´t see at which point those ideas exclude each other.

It removes the need for auto repair and recycling at traders.

I like the idea of repair shops.
Some suggestions:
- 1 in every town, as in a post-apocalyptic world you will need repairman
- quality of repairs depends on the town, npc and item type. It could be (at least partly) based on the npc where you can get profession levels
- if an npc like Balthas tries to fix a too high tier level item like BA, he could fail damaging it more but also succeed and doing a partial repair. Only those like Jenna could do full repair
- repair price and success chance should be based upon deterioration and broken count. You pay even if repair fails, unless the item gets broken beyond repair in which case you could get part of the parts back
