Seriously, travelling by train, caravans and interacting with other people, even the (if it was short) waiting is more fun than using car...
Cars should be expensive, useful for teams of players who need to get somewhere fast and get out of there fast, also having the disadvantage of being possible to be stolen...

So you're part of a gang, maybe even a large one? 

Yeah the devs are trying to make cars a more viable means for players to get around.  Which means unless something makes the cars more safe to own, they will fail.  Because yes the rich will be the only ones to buy them but only because they can [AFFORD] to lose one.  Those of us who don't have cash to waste on something that sadly even now, is so easy to lose, wont buy them.

That has nothing to do with me not looking forward to a fonline where majority of players move around in cars...

I hope you are not right about the first sentence, only dev can say that...
I would enjoy the game more if it was more multiplayer, which public transportation boosts, not the privacy of cars.
Anyways I'm not for making cars entirely useless like previous era either. I even say lets shorten the time, when the car can be found...
Public transport should be cheap (not 100c per ticket...), less conveniant, alternative to cars...

It seems pretty clear to me this game is and always will be about the wasteland is harsh.  Maybe the devs want it this way to see what possible outcomes can happen with cars and griefing?  After some thought cars will still be used as base decoration since those are the only places safe to park, well tents too.  Either that or only the massive gangs can afford to lose them and most of us single players will be either hoofing it or hope to catch a train on time by timing it in real life.

Why else nerf walking speed and make cars not show up on the map for the whole time while parked?  Its clearly an incentive to own one.  But I assume since the devs SEEM to love "the wasteland is harsh" bit, it will always be stealabe for the lulz.
