Mercenaries and levelling

Mercenary, Dog, Slave, Brahmin, you name it.

But mostly; I would be very thankful if someone could tell me if a dog can level up, much like a mercenary.

Ganado:
Dogs count as mercenaries, and should level up. Slaves are bugged and don't level up. I'm not sure about brahmin, but they don't even have commands about combat, and they don't attack people, so you wouldn't be able to level one up anyway.

No clue about all slaves, but all my bandits caught (both critters of them) got next lvl without problem.

speaking of which, any concrete stages of levelling the mercs anyways? like, how many times they level up, what their starting levels are, their xp rate?

Can I tell my mercs who they shall attack and who not?
