My First Impressions
« on: July 20, 2010, 11:53:19 am »

Hello

I found this game two days ago and I am big fan of Fallout 1 & 2 so I started to play immediately. It is awesome game.

I want to tell you my story before my rating

First time I respawned around Vault City so I went there (I read many "How to survive" posts). I wanted to try shovel some shit but NPC didnt give me a shovel. In other cities I visited (NCR, San Francisco) have been option to take a shovel from NPC. Also Vault city Brahmin´s pound is SMALL :-[.

I died and got to NCR. Earned some caps and bought shotgun + some ammo. Tried to kill some encounters but died and then I respawned few times (died while traveling) until I luckily respawned around San Francisco. I shoveled shit and unload caravan car few times, opened bank account in FLC (not sure about the name). bought equipment and killed some easy monsters (dogs, radscorpions). Also I achieved level 3 and set my tent.

My rating

This game is hardcore and I like it but some things are too much for me and it is making playing this game frustrating.

Random Respawn. Yes when I had some equipment in my tent still I cant get there due traveling over half of map and dying to encounters. Rooms in city  were full. (Sign for hotel would be nice, I was able to find hotel only in SC.)

I read that people join fight right after respawn or abuse it in some other way. But I rather will be respawned in my tent or in chosen city after waiting 5 mins as corpse (my suggestion), than spending 90% of my ingame time by traveling back to my tent or favorite city. (or just dying until I will respawn close).

Please understand me that as new player it is not fun die with tent around SC and then be respawned in VC, in this moment I know that I have no chance to get back or even if I make it I will waste far more than 5 mins by traveling and running out of encounters fights. Or I will have to again shovel shit to have caps at least for rifle and ammo, but its extreme boring when you know you have caps and weps and ammo far away and if you spawn there you can hunt again and have fun.

Leveling is problem for new player because you have very limited way how to get exp (Caravan unloading quest should be in all cities, I found it only in SC and should give you at least 300 exp (it has at least 45 mins colddown from my experience). Brahmin´s pound should be more common (some cities need bigger pound or more pounds).

Trying to kill something is not good idead with cheap gear and low outdoorsman skill (BTW Dogs are for 40 exp and small radscorpion for 60 exp, but small radscorpion is easier and have less HP (I saw normaly 15HP radscorpion and 22HP dogs).

It would be nice to have in cities NPCs which offer you place in hunting party, then you will encounter only predefined enemy (geckons, brahmins). You will not be able to loot corpses (NPCs will shot you). But when you done this quest you will get caps and exp. (Probably similar to slaver hunts but I have no experiences with it.)

OK. These are my thoughts. I want to play hardcore game, but that doesnt mean I want to travel and travel across whole map because I have gear in my tent far away (and without gear I can kill nothing). I would like to set my tent (respawn/regear point) in geckon area, hunt it for skins, get stronger then move into new area etc.

I am sorry for my english and thank anyone who read it whole.

For killing low level critters, check out the FOnline Encounter Finder.

You die, you have to travel unless you have a room somewhere.
You could setup your tent near NCR in order to be play at a more central location.
However NCR comes with thieves, tent followers, suicide bombers, people acting like assholes and the increased chance to run into an encounter with another player and getting killed by that player.
On the other side you a mine nearby, 2 locations for electronic parts a train station, lots of low level critters to kill and a few helpful people.

I could spare some gear, caps, and a helping hand for a while sometime today.  PM me with meet up location (Preferably San Fran).  I can even help you lvl up by taking the hits while you pick em off.

Btw, don't quit, no matter what.  People will try to stop you, kill you over and over, break you kneecaps, and shove brahmin shit in your face but don't quit.  Don't let those ass holes win. (This goes against those ass hole npcs aswell not just players :P)

anyways if you don't like travelling long time ways dangerous etc get your outdoorsman skill up, you won't regret it.

This is pretty much the problem. You are shoveling shit as a primary way to get caps, when clearly there are much better alternatives (selling 0 tier crafted items to the correct NPCs).
