well sorry if its already implented, but what about getting slave/merc to base and have option to tell him "guard this base" which will make him disappear from "merc/slave slot" which gives you one slot free for another one, but, there should be a limit, so overall all slaves/mercs counted together are able to guard, only 5 of them for example, good equipped, just saying that if someone resigned base, no need to buy new, just put some strong guards and add the guy's nick on "enemy" list on terminal.

I seriously don't see mercs being implemented as such because they already de-implemented almost such a thing but it caused to much inflation.
Slaves thingy they are working on but they will be locked in a cage not as gaurds.
So I'm sure that by next wipe all these will be solved
