Outdoorsman boosting item: maps
« on: December 16, 2012, 01:22:31 pm »

Have it in your inventory, it provides boost for your od. Bought with caps from towns from some npc who knows the surroundings. Like trappers in klamath.
As a twist, a map bought from klamath could only boost the OD for surroundings of klamath.

To add even more content, a map could be made by a player himself. To make a map, you need an empty map. It can be crafted from 1 junk or bought from library in hub for 5 caps. A map could also be made out of holodisk.
How it works is that when you use your hand on the empty map, you create for example "Mr.Mapper's Map" depending on your charname. Now you just go to worldmap and start traveling. The more encounters you process: kill all hostiles, the better the map becomes for that square and the squares surrounding that square.
There could also be a special dialog for mapping in unsafe town npc: "Ask about surroundings". The locals will assist your cause and improve your map for the surroundings of the town.

Creative suggestion, but I am not sure whether practical to use.

The issue for quite a lot of players, new players is the distance required to travel across the wasteland, not stick to a particular zone. It's a problem for any character to travel large distances if he/she doesn't have the necessary skill or vehicle, that promotes alts. You can't take the map to get faster away from re-spawn, though you can use an alt to be effective. Also the ability to loose it is discouragement to put it in line of risk, for example, you won't see turn based characters with maps if they are acquired in such a fashion, it simply wouldn't be worth the effort as doing it with an alt on a second client is much better, especially now that something like that can be done without any risk of violation rules. The same principle goes for any farming activity, you can't violate the rules of using another client to help yourself.

I just don't see this item fitting or appropriate the way it's initially suggested.

Permanent buff as a consumable, might as well be temporary or constant increase while equipped, but common to obtain along with general OD increase, not tied to a specific zone. If the buff permanent, could be rare to find. These are ideas witch seem to be more compelling for practical usage to be honest.

OD is useful when leveling and farming. You could for example farm with your bg and choose all encs because the map gives boost for that area.

All encounters? That depends on how much bonus this map gives, how long it takes to "upgrade" it and how large the area is the map covers?

It should be an item that you buy for like 2000 caps... or be a rare item in an encounter...

Sounds good actually. Maybe as said above, make it a consumable found in a random encounter. Perhaps an old pre-war gas station and when you walk in you find some unique items. Maybe oil, wrench, super-tool-kit, crowbar, a couple T.V dinners, a free highwayman parked nearby with the keys on the skeleton corpse of the owner next to it and finally... a map also on the skeleton mans person.
Once consumed you get like a 25% or 50% boost to your outdoorsman which can be useful for a PvP alt with low outdoorsman.

I suspect this is just another shallow ploy to have apes with no od and compensate with "magic" itanz.  So they can maximize their pvpness even though they're one dimensional min max shit builds with 1ch 2st etc,.  "I wants to be superman, army of one!"  I love NCR (my home away from home) when people want to go hunting and farming then the inevitable "who has ch?" question.  Really is it too much to ask for people to make more versatile chars instead of all wanting to be the "hero" in the saga?  Then you see these lame threads of how the game devs should just make all these abilities built in, like wtf, quit making alts with only one purpose.  I really think devs should "encourage" having chars that are more suitable to being more self reliant.   Like irl, having 1 ch should be a burdon, 2 st?  should be a real problem, I dont think you would even be able to put metal armor on, make them limited to robes, see if that pisses apes off.  1 in?  ur so dum, it should be a major headache as you will mostly be drooling like the mindless automoton you are, books?  you aint into redin no dam books!  pe is well actually fine as it is, but maybe with 1 pe have encounters constantly, as you wouldnt be able to scout the terrain at all, your basically blind!  en 1?  scorpion poison should probably kill you unless immeately treated (btw posion in general should get a buff to its deadliness imo).  Well thats my thoughts for the moment. consequences for making 1 dimensional shit builds....

avv I don't think you ever gave numbers about that OD boost you mentioned. Anyway personally I think it could be 20% or 150%, it wouldn't be a very violent change on the game if it's an item you gotta carry and which you can lose anytime.

An alternative idea about maps I just came up with: when you find the item "map" (paper map like in avv's original post), the surrounding Worldmap squares are revealed to you. Say, and area of 10x10 squares (or 9x9, because if it's an even number, it wouldn't have an exact center the player would standing on). This means that if there are locations nearby, they will be revealed. Could appear randomly in the inventory of raiders, caravaneers, travellers.

I love how you can't access Sierra unless you get the location via dialogue with some NPC. Maybe we should have more of those locations. Not necessarily new ones (no point with the low population), I am talking about already existing places like Mariposa, Ares or Waterworks.

You could even have the option to make your own maps with Holodisks: if you use a Holodisk to make a map, your Worldmap info for the surrounding 9x9 (o 10x10 or whatever) area of squares will be copied into the disk. You can then give it to another player, who will copy the data into his Pip-boy and then that portion of the Worldmap will be revealed to him/her if s/he didn't have it already.

I guess it shouldn't reveal bases or tents, though.

Obviously the meaning of my post was lost on you (kinda like telling my dad there probably won't be sport hunting in heaven), no surprise, continue about your awesomeness.
